Bob Probert passes away at 45

He's the guy who inspired this screen name. A part of my childhood died with him. RIP Probie

    Adam Burish

Adam Burish is pretty good but is coming off an injury-riddled season, so IDK if his stock's necessarily that high. I agree that the Wings need a hard-nosed player, but I don't think Burish is the right guy. Also, being a former Coyotes STH, Lombo's a great player but I doubt the Red Wings will be able to get him without blowing their cap situation out of the water and he doesn't do much to add toughness to the team. Zenon Konopka, however, not only lead the league in fights for the 09-10 season, but also has a 63% face-off win percentage. A fourth-liner who can win faceoffs and fights would be a great fit on the team, considering Drapes could be the faceoff guy on the fourth line should Konopka be serving a penalty. How I'd dress the team in that light... Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Franzen Hudler-Filppula-Bertuzzi Cleary-Helm-Holmstrom Abdelkader-Konopka-Draper Reserves: Ritola for the scoring lines, Miller for the checking lines.

Gretzky steps down as Coyotes coach.

Meh, he's been behind the scenes for a minute now. I'm not overly concerned about it.

Gretzky steps down as Coyotes coach.

Believe me when I tell you Gretzky is recognizable out here... but that's definitely not a good thing considering the Coyotes' record.

Gretzky steps down as Coyotes coach.

It's regrettable but it's for the best. I hope the Coyotes stay in Phoenix; I've adopted them since I came down here (still pissed that Downey got cut, though ) and respect what Doaner's had to go through to try and keep the team in good spirits. He's my favorite captain since Steve (no disrespect to Lidstrom) and I hope they can start doing better for themselves.

Hey everyone. Looking for people to join the league I made up. I wanted to have a 20 man roster because the Drapers of the team are just as valuable as the Datsyuks. Deep Fantasy League

... IDK if you're connin' me or not. Turnout for the league's been decent though so I'm anything but disappointed. There are a handful of spots left for anyone who may be interested. League ID is 177542 Password is system32 http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/hockey Thanks!

    Check out my fantasy roster

Are PIM a statistical factor in your league? If so, you may want to see if you find a power forward or top defender with a bad attitude. I'd hate to say it on this board, but someone like Getzlaf or Perry could provide that while giving a good scoring totals. Dan Carcillo was definitely a step in the right direction though, so I say that was a good pickup.

    Coyotes Ink Bryzgalov To Extension

Josh Tordjman has been doing well in San Antonio for the Coyotes. He's still probably a season or so off before he'd start making NHL noise, so I expect the Bryzgalov/Tellqvist tandem to stick around at least for another season. Otherwise, there's also David LeNeveu, who's great as a minor leaguer but can't seem to hold onto an NHL job for whatever reason...

WFIE: I like your picture of Carcillo.

    Goalie Masks

I think Hasek and Osgood have the finest masks in the league. Then again, I've always liked the helmet/cage combos (and prefer to use them as well.) Good article. Thanks for posting!

Do we actually have it all?

My opinion is not to change a damn thing with this team. Here's why: - The ZDH line is ridiculously good. - Filppula will materialize as a second-line center, and Happy, Sammy, and Cleary are all capable of fortifying the second line. - This team can roll 4 lines, and the guys they have for reserves aren't too shabby. - The team fortified their grit with toughness through the acquisitions of Downey and Drake. The recent willingness to fight by the Pain Train only helps the cause. - The defense corps is the best in the league (I think Phoenix's is better on paper... on paper.) - When your goaltending tandem consists of Chris Osgood and Dominik Hasek on their "A" games, you're in wonderful shape (I don't think the team should have either as the definite starter and should just have them share playing time even going into the playoffs.) - Biggest reason for the Red Wings success? Two words: Mike Babcock - Name me a better front office in the league and I'll get ya some Cobo Joes. You can't? Well, there you go. The hockey fans in Phoenix would kill to have a team that was 22-6-2 and as great as the Wings are. We can't ***** about goaltending anymore, we can't ***** about a lack of toughness any longer, we can't ***** about a lack of offense or a lack of defense, and we certainly can't ***** about the coaching or the management of the team. This team goes to work harder than the Pistons and is a team that's truly definitive of HockeyTown. Detroiters should be proud that the Wings are their team and have a commitment to excellence and winning. GO WINGS!

    Dave Strader sighting

It was great when I moved here and saw Strader doing the play-by-plays. I started thinking of a more simple era where people watched a network called PASS. As for Panger, I couldn't say enough good things about him. Sucks his playing career ended as soon as it began, but he works a microphone well. That's a fact. I think they're the opposite of the Ken-Mickey tandem. Like Cicada pointed out, Pang's the enthusiastic color commentator while Strater's the play-by-play guy and general "straight man". In Detroit, Mickey's the no-nonsense color commentator while Ken Daniels pretty much clips the microphone whenever he does the play by play (seriously, how many times have you guys heard "GREAT STOP OSGOOD!" or "SCOOOOOOOOORE! HENDRIK ZETTERBERG!!!!!" from Ken Daniels? I still say the best was "PUT THAT IN YOUR HIGHLIGHT REEL!" when Datsyuk scored that goal on Turco.)

    NHL Network now on Comcast!

I'm jealous of you guys. Out here, Cox is the cable provider and when I called to ask about the NHL Network, they told me it would cost extra. When I explained I was talking about the NHL Network and not NHL Center Ice, I received the verbal equivalent for a blank stare.

    McCarty is alive!

Wowie... quite the thread. My opinion, if D-Mac gets clearance to play in January, he should sign a two-way deal and play in Grand Rapids for the rest of the season. If he's still got it or manages to find what he's lost over time, then absolutely I'd love to see him playing for the team next season. With all that downtime and with his injury problems, he isn't NHL material right now. That doesn't mean he couldn't regain his game at the minor league level, though. BTW, does anyone know who Detroit's "AA-Level" affiliate is? I know it was Toledo last year, but they've suspended operations. It was supposed to be Flint after that, but I don't think anything came of that...
  16. TheBadOne

    Ilja Bryzgalov

While I am with you on that, If Phoenix does make the playoffs, I'll bet you $5 they'd face Detroit in the opening round.
  17. TheBadOne

    Ilja Bryzgalov

I'd hate to say it's all one player's fault, but ever since he came to the team here, people in Phoenix are actually *gasp* starting to become interested in a hockey team other than the Wings (seriously, there's a lot of Red Wings fans here.) I'd be shocked if Phoenix didn't give him a legitimate deal to retain him. Phoenix needs him worse than Detroit (suck it Ozzy haters!) does so I'm glad he ended up with the Coyotes. Besides, most everyone here's probably glad that Phoenix is now better equipped to take more points away from Anaheim during the regular season.

    Hartnell at it again!

Seriously, the local TV media here's as supportive of the Coyotes as an absentee dad is to his kids, so I don't think anyone but the hockey fans here would care. Too bad, because they're 4-0 with Bryzgalov in net, don't mind getting into fights, and are actually above .500 for a change.

    Downey Love

Downey does rule, indeed. 1. It's possible he could get claimed, but I don't think it's likely. Downey knows his role here in Detroit, but I think that it's because he's in Detroit that he's able to do so well (last season, he played a few games in Montreal before being demoted to Hamilton.) He's never been a full-time player anywhere else and probably won't at this stage of his career. Fedoruk was a toughguy claimed on waivers, but also has more NHL experience than Downey has and has been able to stay in a team's lineup for the majority of the season. 2. While all players are expecting to bring their "A" game, few players do so like Ellis does. A lot of what he does right isn't going to be found on the stats sheet and occasionally does find himself with a point or a plus rating. Whenever the coaches tell him to improve something, he exceeds their expectations. He may not have Zetterberg like skills, but he does have all the right skills, plus leadership abilities, that make him suitable for Detroit's style of play. Some teams may have interest in Downey, but there are likely more teams out there who'd be interested in Ellis. Ellis would also be less likely to be re-claimed off waivers than Downey. 3. The fourth line, w/o Downey, would be Drake, Kopecky, or Huds/Filppula. It would be a decent line, but I really liked the Kopecky-Ellis-Downey unit we saw at the beginning of the season. Thems my $.02

    Happy Birthday Ozzie!

35? Wow. Then again, there's a guy on the team who's 45, so maybe I should be surprised... ... just the same, Happy Birthday Ozzie!

Keating is lazy and he sucks

I don't care how bad Keating is. Until you've had to deal with Todd Walsh, you know nothing about the laziness and suckiness of sports broadcasters... I get to watch Dave Strader and Darren Pang call Coyotes games (which is as entertaining as Ken and Mickey), and then this stuffed-shirt goofball shows up and is condescending to just about everyone he talks to. He may very well be the first broadcaster to get leveled with a body check... intentionally.

what would it take to get vinny lecavalier?

Man, I always ALWAYS come late to the good threads! Consarnit! (I love how that one dude called people idiots in posts that have 2,534 grammatical errors. Classic!) Lecavalier to the Wings.... hmmm... you know, I wouldn't trade anyone for him and would just wait for Free Agency to come about. I would possibly consider Datsyuk for Lecavalier, but he works so well with The Talented Mr. Zettterberg. I wouldn't trade Zetterberg to the anyone, not even to the Penguins for Crosby, Malkin, and Staal. Not to diminish what the previous three aforementioned players can do, but Zetterberg's arguably the best player in the league this season and a testament to the best management group in hockey. Oh, and this team can win the Stanley Cup. Whether or not they will is entirely up to them. Should they not succeed in doing so, I view that as a personal problem amongst the team as opposed to a lack of talent.

    The Central Division's no joke!

I know it's only a few games into the season, but there's something I've come to realize about the Central Division this season. Mainly, instead of fending off Nashville for divisional supremacy while the other three teams fight not to end up at the bottom of the league, both Columbus and St. Louis are above .500 and Chicago is at .500. If this trend continues the press can no longer use "Well, the Wings have so many points because they're in a weak conference" as an excuse for their success. Hell, if the Wings still end up on top, that's just another obstacle the Wings have overcome and shown that they're truly a world-class organization. Thoughts?

    Goalie masks

In fairness, Ozzy is rumored to be part owner of Warwick Masks, the same people who made Dom's helmet, but for some reason, he keeps going back to the Cooper SK2000. Dom's Helmet was probably $2000 for the helmet and cage, while Ozzy's setup was probably around $90 new (those helmets in mint condition, however, sell well on eBay.) Personally, I like the old school helmet-cage combos better than the new masks, both in appearance and use. But hey, to each their own.
