Your thoughts on Ozzie's performance in game 5
stevie for president replied to Chaldean's topic in General
vintage ozzie. i think hes made a career of being exactly what his team needs. they needed lights out play and he came through. Ozzie wins, plain and simple. he always has. thats all hes ever cared about and its gotten him pretty far in his career. -

in the nhl, 20 teams took the 1st 2 games on the road in round 1. 8 of them won game 3 and 13 won the round. for any round when the road team goes up 2-0, 33 of 65 won game 3 and 49 of 65 won the series. going up 2-0 in the first round regardless of home ice advantage happened 78 times. 35 times the team up 2-0 won the third game and 65 times they won the series. and of course in any round when either team goes up 2-0, 149/280 (53.2%) went up 3-0 and 243 (86.8%) won the series. source: http://www.whowins.com/tables/up20.html

Report: Brunnstrom to sign with Canucks
stevie for president replied to MacK_Attack's topic in General
can someone please tell me why he wasnt drafted and why everyone is making a huge deal about him? -
not including the 2002 red wings, who was the last team to win the stanley cup purely on skill and not on lucky bounces and controversial calls (or non calls). Hell, even the 2002 wings had luck and questionable calls (statue of liberty had both!) or braithewait shooting the puck at yzerman and it goes in. i mean come on. this is how i see it. both teams have lucky bounces. the wings simply execute on theirs and they can recover when calls and bounces go against them. nashville cant. or at least they havent. i mean anyone wouldve scored radulovs goal. They shouldnt have tanked in chicago. be careful what you wish for. and 1 more thing. if nashville capitalized on their 1st period, were not having this discussion. bottom line, you need to execute and if you dont, you lose. end of story. welcome to the playoffs, learn that lesson and you might win a series cry babies.

i can make every one happy! what if vs exclusively played CBC and TSN broadcasts. you know, like how the night game is from the canadian company. then everyone can still watch the wings and those who hate vs get the canadian announcers.

1st Round Opponent: Flames or Predators
stevie for president replied to RedLightGoesOn's topic in General
best case scenario (realistically) wings beat preds avs beat wild ducks beat stars sj beats the flames so round 2 is wings vs avs and sharks vs ducks. -
its better than hockey night in canada which plays the maple leafs game EVERY SINGLE SATURDAY!!!

either we cant afford him and if he stayed even at 8 million - the 24% roll back, thats 6.08 million. think of how different this team would look if he signed the 4 year $32 million contract! also there was an article posted on here a couple months ago (it was in russian but someone translated it) and it confirms that de was upset that detroit kept lowering his offer.

one thing i think everyone is missing is this. if you reward the 9th and 10th seeds, who do you punish? and that would be the 7th and 8th seeds. why should they have to suffer another round of the playoffs? they played better for 82 games than the other two teams, yet they are forced to play another playoff series. Like what others said earlier, the 1 vs 16 seeding would make it necessary to abolish conferences and divisions. Reseeding the conference championship series could still put the best 2 teams against each other and have the divisions mean something. one proposition i do like is 4 divisions of 7 or 8 teams. i say forget about conferences all together. if the league expands to 32 teams (4 divisions of 8) you could play your division 4 times (28 games) and the other 3 twice (48 games) for a grand total of 76 games. owners might not like that but it takes about 2 weeks out of the regular season meaning hockey ends in may. i think hockey in june is bad for the ice and the ratings. if you contract 2 teams (4 divisions of 7) you could play your division 4 times (24 games) and the other divisions 2 times (42 games) and play 2 of the other 3 divisions one more time (one division at home and one away, similar to the current east vs west schedule for 14 games) for a total of 82 games. the same as right now. Playoffs could be 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3 in each division, 1st two rounds vs division and then reseed the division winners according to regular season points and again play 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3.
-
i did like the idea of reseeding the top 4 teams. i hate how the finals are best from the east vs best from the west. that works in baseball and football but not hockey. the stanley cup should be decided by the best two teams. imagine detroit vs colorado in the finals last decade. or detroit vs anaheim last year. or maybe in future something like montreal vs boston or toronto or something. those would be far and away better than san jose montreal or edmonton tampa bay

i think if theres absolutely no way an opposing player can touch the puck than just blow the play dead. we dont need to see lidstrom skate half way down the ice uncontested to touch a puck. it takes seconds off the clock. if an opposing player has a shot at negating the icing well see who touches the puck first. if the defenseman doesnt want to get hit he shouldnd play the damn game! injuries happen. its hockey. as far as a double minor is concerned, thats a little extreme. MAYBEE if the ref deems the hit completely unnecessary than give a minor, but this still wouldnt stop injuries. getzlaf or bertuzzi would LOVE to run a wings defensemen. theyd gladly take 2 minutes in exchange for hurting lids or rafalski. i say s*** happens. how many people get hurt from a slap shot? you arent going to take that out of the game so deal with the icing the way it is.
-
i think you guys are missing the biggest point. BURE over LIDSTROM?! are you kidding me? Lidstrom is one of the greatest hockey players of all-time. If he was north american instead of swedish he would be about to win his nhl record 9th norris trophy. If he didnt play with hall of famers his whole career he would have plenty of harts and pearsons. When you think of greatest defensemen of all time its hard to take anyone over bobby orr, but after him id say it lidstrom. Best goal scorers of all-time, bure isnt in my top 10. and as far as fedorov is concerned, we saw him game in and game out, we didnt see bure close to as much as fedorov.

The "NHL is Messed Up Because..."
stevie for president replied to Lovin Jiri Fischer's topic in General
because everyone thinks that the game needs more goals when it really needs more hits, more fights, more quality scoring chances, and less officiating. I dont think im the only one who thinks a great save is almost as good as, if not better than some goals. its kind of how a double or triple play or a diving catch is nicer than a home run, or a blocked shot is nicer than a 3 point shot. -
I'm sure no one will agree with me but in my opinion what Pronger did, from what ive heard, i havent actually seen it unfortunately (keep that in mind!), is worse that "the bertuzzi incident" and ill tell you why. 1.) Bertuzzi did this to retaliate a hit against his best player. 2.) Bertuzzi used his hands 3.) Bertuzzi isnt a repeat offender, at least i dont think he is but i did absolutely no research at all. Pronger did this because hes a *****, he used a sharp skate, and he takes cheap shots almost weekly. Im sure bertuzzi didnt want to do serious damage to steve moore. i dont know, im not him and i wasnt there, but i cant imagine a "power forward" and a relatively tough hockey player would resort to a blind shot that was meant to end a career. Pronger used a weapon to intentionally injure a player. and we all know how damaging a skate blade is (zednik, malarchik). Now having said all that i firmly believe that both pronger and bertuzzi need to get their asses kicked by mccarty. that would really make my day. and 1 more thing before i go, this is 1 more reason why i hate the ducks.

does mac have a shot at the masterton?
-
i was expecting a hossa type player, i really was, but when i saw what was given up for hossa and richards i was so happy the wings didnt make a move. i really think a lot of it had to do with rental player as opposed to long term player. bertuzzi was a waste and say the penguins lose in the 1st round and hossa signs elsewhere. thats a horrible situation they are in. i was listening to the radio last year and i think it was jim develanno that said sometimes the best trade is the one that you dont make because of chemistry issues. so who knows, this could be a blessing in disguise. also, last year, id say avery was the best trade and this year we got mccarty. im not comparing mac and avery in playing style, but as far as locker room presence and energizing the crowd are concerned i think they are pretty similar. all in all, yes the wings didnt address the problems they needed to but to call them losers is debatable. id call the penguins losers and dallas is still up in the air on how richards plays. How can the ducks be winners? they didnt add anyone via trade.

Greatest goal scorer of alltime: Pavel Bure
stevie for president replied to DenJ91's topic in General
no one can deny that bure was amazing, but theres too many ifs. and your argument doesnt make sense looking at goals per game. you should only include gretzky's prime, hulls prime, et c. bure never played in years of declining talent. And the argument that gretzky played with some of the all-time greats could be easily disputed. Ok, on paper, it cant be disputed, but hypothetically, if gretzky never played for the oilers, who suffers more? gretzky or the oilers? and he stilled scored 30-40 goals with the kings for a few seasons. I think hypothetically if bure and gretzky switched places gretzky would have scored more goals that bure did and bure would have scored less goals that gretzky did. and why do i say this? the goalies werent that much better in the early years of bures career, and bure was not a playmaker on a team where he was usually the only star. Gretzky not only scored a record amount of goals, but he also set up hall-of-famers with a record number of assists. in short, if gretzky never had super stars on his team, if he HAD to be a goal scorer and not a playmaker, im sure he wouldve scored over 1,000 goals. the fact is he had players to play with that set him up but he set them up a lot more, taking away from his own goal total. -
i thought the mario lemieux hat trick was one goal, one assist, and radiation therapy all in the same day. I say the Steve Yzerman hat trick should be having your jersey number retired, getting a road named after you, and getting your humble personality booed by 20,000+ fans that think you are a god amongst men
-
he has nothing left to prove. 3 cups, a gold metal, a conn smythe, the norris should be renamed Lidstrom, and if he retired right now he would be a 1st ballot hall of famer and have his jersey retired. Who are the best defencemen of all time? 1. Bobby Orr. is lidstrom #2? not many dmen get attention so im kind of confused.

Balsillie group accuses Bettman of forcing Preds to break off talks
stevie for president replied to edicius's topic in General
this is what struck me as funny the most. leipold lost 70 million in 10 years. in the last 2 years (post lockout) he lost 27 of that 70 million. that would mean in the 8 years prior to the lockout, nashville lost 43 million. i think no one will argue with me when i say that watching nashville for at least 7 of those first 8 years was brutal when compared to the most recent two years. so the hell with revenue sharing and a salary cap in an NHL where "record attendance" is being totaled does nashville do that poorly? Just doing some quick math. since the lockout the preds averaged losing 13.5 million a year before the lockout the preds averaged losing 5.375 million a year the total average loss per year is 7 million. -
Orr, Howe, Gretzky, and Lemieux are for sure ahead of Yzerman. Bobby Hull, messier, and Ron Francis are in his league. I say anywhere from 5th to 8th is a fair spot for yzerman overall. and that includes celebrity status, impact to the game, and leadership. ask the average joe schmoe who yzerman is and i bet you dont get the correct answer, but messier lemieux gretzky and howe will draw you correct responses. and no one influenced the game like bobby hull and wayne gretzky. Yzerman had a huge impact in detroit but he didnt fill crowds like gretzky and hull, from what ive heard.
