If the Wings can't sign Cleary to an extension before the deadline they may trade him and that would suck. I understand that its his big contract year, so he needs to decide if the big pay cut the WIngs expect him to take from market value is worth it. I hope that Cleary takes less to stay here, but I can't blame him if he doesn't. With Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Rafalski, and soon to be Zetterberg all raking in big money, this is the kind of thing we are going to see as our younger players get better. Engelhardt was one of those "depth signings" like Cullen, Hartigan, Gelech, etc. that were supposed to make the Griffs better this year but they didn't. So they pretty much are just shifting for a younger part.

Not only that but UNRELATED. Draper is under contract and Cleary is an impending UFA due for a raise....

People tend to love Downey too much because he fights. I like a guy that fights but that is all he does and I don't think one trick ponies are necessary.

I don't know that I want the Wings to trade for Blake if it will take too much. I would be okay with them trading a conditional pick and Quincey or Meech, but not much more than that.

Simply because look at Downey's ice time. Guys who are enforcers and dont play special teams get very little ice time, and in the bump and grind of playoff hockey everyone tires out and you NEED to run 4 lines every game to not wear the team down. Drake plays the PK, Downey and McCarty don't. its as simple as that. Thus there is no need for both Downey and McCarty where as Drake has an extra assest that they do not. Don't get me wrong I love all three but given my choice of 2 out of 3 it is Drake and McCarty (if he gets up to speed).
