^ Agreed AND i do not want to dig it up but at the start of last season I believe Holland said they wanted to focus on moving Meech exclusively to defense.
-
Only for 3 to 4 weeks. When Ward is back and Legace is placed on waivers, if our goaltending is as is with production I guarentee a rhtread on claiming him, and depending on how he does I may support that as a back-up...
-
To rerail this thread... I hope we do not claim him.

See my above post Carman... that Howard was hoped to reach potential and with Hudler still in plans at the time it was 100% money...Howard was the best financial option with the most upside at the time... That may have changed now...
-
Meech is a defenceman...and Shanny signed a $1 Million contract... Also at the time Hudler was still considered a Red Wings plan of action since Conklin signed in St. Louis on July 1st, and Hudler left the Wings on July 10th, so Hudler was going to sign for what the Wings thought would be at least 2.5 million of the 4 million remaining and they still needed two more forwards for 1.5 million dollars...so in your books 2 Patrick Eaves type players... Which would have been 0.7 million dollars for 2 forwards if they had Conklins contract of 1.3 million and not Howards 0.7 million... That being said at the time of Conklin's departure the Wings thought they needed 2 players for 1.5 million dollars... When Hudler left that changed...so yes at the time that Conklin was let go the decision was very much motivated by money. IF the Red Wings could have financially been able to I don't doubt for one second that Conklin would have stayed... If need be I expect them to go with a guy like Biron as back-up because the hope was for Howard to take a step forward, which to me he hasn't done. So don't think that Howard is here solely because of his talent and the Wings faith in him...its mostly because of money, and somewhat for a hope of reaching his potential...if he fails to do so soon he will be replaced.

Brett Lebda is sick http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2009/11/si..._in_for_wi.html

He has played through concussions...really i thought you were not medically cleared to play until all concussion symptoms were gone Mr. Weekes... That being said... Real dirty hit, bad luck for the rangers
-
How many good players full of potential that had injury problems and were bought out and are already being paid by the bruins so is willing to take a one year deal to try to re-establish themselves in the league... There aren't very many... You would be hard pressed to find another player as good as Eaves, with as much potential as Eaves, for the same price as Eaves...

He really didn't "tweet" that, did he?
russianswede919293 replied to cusimano_brothers's topic in General
Poor attempt but the message was clear and its a message that has been debated in Montreal for years. Julien was fired for playing Huet over Theodore, then they realized that Theodore was crap and traded him. Huet was traded to ensure that Price would get full playing time when he was recalled. Carby was fired because he played Halak over Price down the stretch. Now is Halak better then Price??? Its a solid spin, just not done in a classy way. -

He is being a good player agent really. His client is only 2 years older then Price at 24 and has better stats and more wins then Price (in less games played then Price he has 2 more wins). He knows that unless Halak becomes a starting goalie soon he is going to be a back up until he is a UFA and can leave Montreal. He is bartering for his client to get a shot at being a starter so that he can make more money and be a starter for his career not a career back up... -
Well that was quick I read a rumor about them wanting to sign him this morning, posted it in the Ward thread. They waste no time. Congrats Manny happy to see you back in the NHL... Don't hang yourself when the games get rough though...it is Carolina... Just Kidding...Mostly...

The habs play better hockey in front of Halak...Just saying. -
honestly lebda is somebody i would love to see go...only he is here until Lilja is back. Personally I would rather Janik or Kindl have his spot though.
-
Rumor is that Carolina may sign Manny Legace as a temporary replacement for Cam Ward while he is injured. LINK

Congrats. At least 15 won this week to my 12, won't drop too far in the standings. It gets harder to picke every weekend with more and more hot streaks and upsets.

With all the injuries, how much can we realistically spend?
russianswede919293 replied to Viking_Erection's topic in General
I disagree...#1 once medically cleared to play you cannot leave a person on the LTIR. #2 I would rather Franzen get back into playing shape and shake the rust off in march so he can be an impact player in the playoffs in april... -
http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2009/11/ke...s_will_not.html Tardif will not be called up...nobody will. Meech going as 13th/7th yet again Call ups could be made if somebody gets a day-to-day or the flu, and Tardif is in the mix again then, but will not replace Williams on the roster.

Holland has said that there will be no injury call-up http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2009/11/ke...s_will_not.html My guess is that means Meech to be 13th forward/7th defenseman and that any talks of money is a moot point... -

http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2009/11/ke...s_will_not.html Holland has stated that the Wings will NOT call anybody up as an injury replacement for Williams. Until the next player gets hurt it appears that Derek Meech is the 7th defenseman/13th forward yet again. -

^ this point is one that people either do not know or do not understand. The common consensus here seems to be that people think we can go sign a prorated contract for the amount of money on the LTIR right now and keep everyone when the players come back. LTIR is meant to allow you to call up replacements if you are too close to cap to fit them, or sign somebody when you know for a fact that your player is out for the whole season. It is not meant to be or designed in a way to cheat the salary cap... You need to be salary cap compliant before and after the player is hurt, you are only allowed leniency up to that player's contract value while that player is presently out. -
They also need a back-up goalie... If you think Chris Osgood can continue to play this many games all season I believe you are mistaken. Ozzie is a 55 GP a year goalie so he can play the playoffs like he does. Jimmy Howard is not being given the playing time to allow Ozzie that rest. This is because the same Jekyl and Hyde performance that mae Dan Larsson the starter in Grand Rapids for part of the year, is still there for Jimmy Howard. Jimmy Howard was being groomed to be the next Wings starter...inconcsistency issues plagued him and left him in Grand Rapids until he was 25. Those same inconsistency issues are apparent now. Howard has shown he can be good, but on a team like the red wings where fans eat goalies for every meal of the day, this isn't where that talent is going to emerge... An extra scorer will not give Ozzie more rest...so yes they do still need a back-up goalie.

As has been stated many times already a big reason why there have not and probably will not be, any moves or signings is that the extra cap of a long term IR player is temporary, you can go over the cap to the amount of money that the player on LTIR is compensating for. Its not a if you don't fill the space you gain cap space scenario. Once that player comes off LTIR you lose any and all cap compensation for their injury. Thus if you go trade for a 4 million dollar player, when Filppula, Williams, Franzen, and Lilja all come back you are way way over cap. I hope I am wording myself well but here is my example. Lilja LTIR 1.3 million dollar cushion You use a 0.7 million dollar player as your call up and are now 0.7 million over cap, but its okay because lilja has 1.3 million of compensation... Lilja comes back...you did not gain the prorated amount of the 0.5 million you didnt use...you still need to be under cap for lilja...
