Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?
russianswede919293 replied to YoungGuns1340's topic in General
Spectors Looks like the posts saying the Wings were "lightyears ahead" in the negotiations with Atalanta are a little bit misinformed... -
No they are not, it hurts to save a puck in the trapper if it hits in the wrong spot, which is why there is more padding in those spots. I have no concern about size, I just feel that if they keep it up goalies will not have sufficient protection. Trimming size down is no issue to me as long as the paddingh remains sufficient.

I'd say at least their money, he is better than Briere and Drury. -

Agreed -
I do agree with that. I just don't think it should be taken to the extreme where goaltenders are put at risk for injury just to increase scoring.

Greatest Post Ever! And I don't see why people are surprised Ellis was taken, I would have been surprised had he not been taken to be honest. He is a hard worker, and there are plenty of teams that could use his work ethic as example.

That right there is my issue...I have agreed that number wise he fits, unless cap doesnt go up for the 2009/2010 season. BUT the squeezing in is a dangerous things. Plenty of teams have played with fire and played the cap tight, like Tampa Bay and Toronto, and it has gotten them in plenty of trouble. -

Fedorov, Lilja, Cleary will NOT all fit under the cap...Hell even Lilja wouldn't fit under cap with a Hossa deal unless they let Cleary walk... -
I see your arguement, thats why I put my bias up top. I've almost broken fingers with equipment I have and making it smaller isn't helping my cause any...

Nope. I am biased though. As a goalie I am tired of seeing all the leagues changes be to make things worse for goaltenders. I would be angry but accept smaller equipment, but if the league ever makes nets bigger I will be so fed up with what a freak show Bettman wants the league to be. There is nothing wrong with a 1-0 win in overtime...it is quite fun to watch actually. I love to see great goaltending and magnificent saves. And all Bettman wants is ridiculously high scores. Lower scoring has nothing to do with equipment or s*** like that, that is why I believe its come down again since equipment got smaller toi begin with. It is that the training for goaltenders is so intense now that the goalies in the league are ridiculously talented.

Campbell is a lot better than people are crediting him for.... I hate the Sabres, but I live in Buffalo and go to school in Rochester and my roommate is a Sabres fan so I see him play a lot. He is very comparable to Mathieu Schneider in Offensive ability and a little bit more sound defensively than Schneider, and 10 years younger as well. He will get and deserves, every penny that Schneider got.

I also love that regardless of how many times I bring up deferred bonuses to next years salary nobody trying to justify Hossa thiniks that this is involved in calculating the cap. You must assume it only goes up 3 million dollars and not the while 5. Assuming it goes up more than it will gets you into trouble. so with my previous post taking deferred salary into account and only a 3 million cap raise the Wings are 1 million under cap IF I assumed the right salaries for guys like Howard that are RFA'a which could be more than my assumptions. -

So what cheap fills do you have for departures of Lilja, Cleary, Drake, etc. the answer is prospects that may not be ready yet. The Red Wings are very conservative in bringing young players up, waiting until they are ready, I don't want to see that change. -

But NONE of those "cases" take into account defered bonuses for this year that will happen if the Wings acquire Hossa and a defenseman. And also they are all ASSUMING that the cap will go up for the 2009/2010 season, and that is too far away of an assumption. There is proof of a 3-5 million dollar increase for next season, which in prior posts I have shown that with the deferred bonuses the Wings are pushing cap in that scenario if it only goes up 3. AND you CANNOT assume the cap will go up every year that is too far of a glimpse to see, it is based on the rest of this year and all of next year's league revenue. What happens if the cap doesn't go up for the 2009/2010 season like you are all assuming, I have shown that in another post as well, and the answer is that if the cap does not raise again that season Zetterberg's raise would not fit under cap. And those numbers are all assuming our PREDICITIONS of player salaries that re-sign with the team are correct and they do not get more than we are assuming. It is a risky venture to go into a world where you are pushing cap for years to come,...ask the Maple Leafs... -

It will be a while. He was not very good in Grand Rapids, and went back to Sweden, where he has been slow to recover from his rough start to the season. I think that had he made the commitment and stayed like Ritola he would be on a good schedule still, but going to Sweden, and not producing there, may have slowed him down some. -

Alright I have come out to make one last point here. People have compared the salary commitments of signing Hossa long term to the lightning, which people have said "The Wings have more depth than the lightning," but firstly the Wings would have to trade that depth to get Hossa, and secondly this is a team that makes its living not rushing prospects into the NHL, and to acquire Hossa would mean they would have to rush young, cheap prospects into the NHL to fit under cap, which goes against the way this team has developed prospects for YEARS now, and I think that that is just not feasible. So again I state, based on cap constraints, DEFERRED BONUSES FROM THIS SEASON, and the Wings policy of slowly developing players until they are ready (most don't come up until they are out of options) I just don't see this whole thing as a realistic possibility. -

That is good news, because what it would take to get either of them would be too much, and neither would be a guarentee to be here next season. -

I hate Eklund so much, he takes anything he hears and blows it all way out of proportion. I love how the second Ottawa is lined to Fedorov in the media its an e4 and is highly likely, when nobody else has reported more than talks. But the giant s*** the Ottawa GM took in the toilet called him up and told him the inside scoop. -

I concede to the fact that I am fighting a lost cause in this thread, so I'm out, we will just have to wait and see until Tuesday. -
Correct, it means they needed somebody they could send down if they make a trade on Tuesday, and to somebody saying they wanted Ellis to get taken, no they did not...they wanted him to pass through and be assigned to Grand Rapids.

Pretty much an epic debate as to whether or not the Wings can afford to keep Hossa long term if they trade for him, and whether or not Filpulla is worth risking a trade for somebody who is possibly a rental player. So yeah 41 pages of speculation -
Too bad, I know he was nothing more than a 13th forward, but I kind of liked him...Good luck Ellis.

That is assuming the cap goes up both this year and next year...you cannot make that assumption for next year.
