    Crosby's No Goal

Because it's pretty darn near impossible to pin a puck down with a glove on a sheet of ice other than one of two ways: 1) On its edge, or 2) Flat. Seeing that it didn't appear to be in state #1, it was in #2. If that isn't good enough, you can go back to the circle concept. If the exposed part of the puck doesn't fit in a circle, then it's not flat and will be 2D shape will be elliptical. If it does fit in a circle, then it was flat. Basic Geometry again.

    Crosby's No Goal

In this case they could have. In the Versus slo-mo video from the overhead camera there was a clear frame of when Biron had the puck flat against the ice with this glove before he swept it out and the puck was the furthest away from the goal line. With the still frame, it would have been easy to "complete the circle" and see if it was inside the adjacent visible goal lines. I think in cases like this one, basic Geometry and be used to show that a partially covered puck was or wasn't over the line with clear certainty.

    Crosby's No Goal

Not really... We know the puck is circular and more than half the puck was exposed sticking out of Biron's glove flat on the ice. All a goal judge would have to do is draw the missing outline of the puck and reference the "completed" puck with the visable goal line. No conspiracy needed. If the NHL follows the rule that "you must see white" in order for it to be called a goal, then a goalie can have his pads two feet back into the net and as long as he's got part of the puck covered, then it's "no goal" if reviewed.

    Crosby's No Goal

I'll have to look for it, but I recall that a couple of years ago the NHL altered the rule to allow such scenarios (like a glove or pad blocking a clear view) were you can logically be certain that the puck is over the line to be enough to call it a "goal" in review.

    Suspension Update

I think he stated his motivation: He saw what he thought was going to be a Zetterberg "sandwich" behind the goal at the horn and was trying to protect the Wing's top forward. The press parenthetically said that Osgood was talking about Lids, but the replay showed Z had the puck behind the net as Ribeiro was streaming in. Loosing Frazenstien is bad enough, but loosing Z in addition due to something like a back injury by being run at the horn would be a likely series changer. Correction: It was Rafalski that had the puck, not Z.... but I think the motivation was the same.

    Ribiero's swing at Ozzie

It's nice to read a rather even keeled evaluation from the other side... However, since everyone else is chiming in, let me add the following observations: 1) I think it's safe to say that Riberio's check to the league will be bigger than Osgood's. I agree with others that say that Osgood at-worst committed a "high stick" instead of a "butt-end". Ozzie didn't try and skewer Riberio, he was trying to slow up what he thought was a possible run against our top scorer at the buzzer and ended up getting Ribeiro in the upper chest/neck area. 2) Where Ribeiro hit him isn't really material, the main offense is that it was after the final horn sounded and it was a two handed tomahawk. Ozzie trying to sell the call didn't make any difference with the above facts, where Ribeiro hit him only would have affected the nature and the severity of the action from the league. 3) It wouldn't surprise me if the NHL fined Osgood because they thought the Actor's Equity charity fund needed some help instead of because of what they thought about his stick work.

    GDT-Pens/Rangers and Stars/Sharks

I threw in the towel after the 2nd OT... what did the Sharks do to get the penalty? They way the refs were letting stuff go in the OTs periods I saw (trips, high sticks, etc.), I figure a Shark must have had to pull a knife to get 2 mintues!!! Wow, what a game! Let's hope that really was Turco's best game ever!

Who scares you the most...DAL or SJ?

There's always a first.... but isn't it still true that Turco has never won a game at JLA in regulation in his career?

    Forsberg out of game 4

Actually, it would probably be better for us if he DID play tonight based on the fact that he helped the Wings bag two goals in Game 3!!! So far, the "part-time" NHL'ers aren't fairing to well this play-offs...

    Babcock signs 3 year deal?

I concur... I remember hearing on FSN that Holland and Babcock had suspended contract talks until after the playoffs.
  11. Correcting a brain-fart: The title should read Rocky Mountain News, not The Denver Post... my error. http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008...-for-avalanche/ Ouch!!!

See, not all Denver columnists are so bad

    Am I the only one?

I agree... A straight shot at Biron would probably have had a 10-20% chance of making it, that open net tip would have been more like a 30-50% chance. It wasn't quite the same as Hudler passing up a shot and just passing it to a guy in the corner.

    Am I the only one?

Right play for sure... Philly assumed that AO would take the shot and reacted as such. Federov had an open net and if the D hadn't played it just right, it would have been an instant GWG. It was a higher percentage play than an open slap shot in my book.

    Quack, Quack.... bye-bye Ducks!

Two cheap shot artists gone in the same day: Tootoo and Pronger.... What a banner day!

    NHL.com's Frozen Moment

That photo, and some other cool pre-game photos were taking by team photographer Dave Reginek and posted on Getty Images web site (Getty partners with the NHL). Based on being taken from several angles, it appears Reginek was shooting from the catwalk during the warm-ups. My guess is he used a 300mm lens on a dSLR and fired the arena strobes via a PocketWizard wireless remote. There are also some nice over-the-net photos from the game posted to Getty's site (www.gettyimages.com look in the "Editorial" area), but they appear to be taken from a mounted remote camera. For safety reasons, most venues won't let photographers remain on overhead catwalk out of fear of something (batteries, cell phones, etc.) being accidently dropped and hurting a player or interrupting the game. Speaking of that photo, I was at the last game against Chicago and I saw a photographer setting up for a very cool photo of the practice pucks getting dumped on the ice. The guy had a fish-eye lens on his camera and held the camera just off to the side about a foot off the ice and had it aimed into the player's face. That would have been one cool photo.
