Pavel Datsyuk - NEW photos of the season

Dats needs 1 more point to tie his Total Points record of 87 points in last season.

  15. All it takes is a little focus to see something clearly. With Henrik Zetterberg out of the Detroit Red Wings' lineup the past 13 games, opponents have been able to focus more on Pavel Datsyuk. That focus, however, has shown that Datsyuk is a dominant player who can carry the Red Wings with or without the support of Zetterberg. Centering the Red Wings' top line and drawing the opposition's top defense pairing every game, Datsyuk has led his team over the past 13 games with six goals and 17 points. In three of the past four games, Datsyuk has been the only goal-scorer for the Red Wings. "I thought he responded real well when Hank (Zetterberg) went down," said Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom. "They played real well together and Hank was on a roll. The two of them were fun to watch and tough to stop for the opponents. But once Hank went down, I thought that Pavel just continued to play like he did with Hank. I think that's a big positive for him because he knows he can carry that line like he did the last few games here." The playoffs are a lightning rod for Datsyuk's detractors. In the past three postseasons, Datsyuk has tallied no goals and nine assists in 21 games. At the same time, however, no Red Wing has been an offensive standout over the past three playoffs. Brendan Shanahan had just one more point than Datsyuk over those three years. Nicklas Lidstrom had the same number of points. Steve Yzerman had just one more point than Datsyuk. In fact, Yzerman was one of Datsyuk's biggest supporters after the post-season a year ago, saying that people didn't realize how injured badly injured that the Russian was. Datsyuk had to have fluid drained from his thigh during the playoffs. "He would have succeeded last year if he would have been healthy," said Detroit coach Mike Babcock. "It's not like he didn't play good once he got going. He played really well. Our team didn't buy him enough time to get rolling. Pav's going to be fine. He's competitive. He knows how to handle the physical going." Datsyuk fills several roles for the Red Wings. He was playing on the wing alongside Zetterberg, but has moved to the middle since his linemate's injury. Datsyuk is second on the team in faceoffs at 56.3 percent, trailing only Kris Draper (57.5 percent) and ahead of Zetterberg (52.5 percent). Datsyuk is one of the team's top penalty killing forwards with opponents averaging a team-low 3.96 goals per 60 minutes with him on the ice. (The team average is 5.78 power-play goals allowed per 60 minutes.) At even strength, the Red Wings have outscored opponents 67-33 with Datsyuk on the ice. That's the biggest goal differential on the team per minute played -- bigger than Zetterberg's or Lidstrom's. "He's just a flat-out good player," said Babcock. "Whether you're penalty killing or in the last minute (of the game), he's a good player, a person who generates offense. You just can't say enough about him. He's eating up the minutes and he's playing real well. He's always been good, but I think maybe even more this year because we've given him that chance to be good. He and Z (Zetterberg) are our best forwards and they drive the bus on this team. They've got to be the best. They work the hardest. If you're going to lead, you've got to work the hardest and be the most detail oriented. Pav's doing it for us."

    Datsyuk is the goal scorer

In the last 5 games Dats score 4 goals and 0 assists... Look for him to be a leading goal scorrer in the playoffs.

    Datsyuk is the goal scorer

To bad that Holland didn't trade him at the trade deadline, right? Alot of Dats haters will eat crow when Dats will be a man in the playoffs.

    Datsyuk is the goal scorer

Hank would be rusty and cold coming back right into playoff, like Dats last year. Datsyuk is hot and on fire right now.
  20. CCM-Reebok hockey poster boy, Sidney Crosby is honouring his committment to Sher-Wood hockey sticks, so Pavel Datsyuk's become the standard-bearer for Reebok's 9KO "O-Stick". However, there is one problem with the stick: Like all NHL players, Pavel Datsyuk has his choice of hockey sticks. When Reebok offered a new stick with holes in it, the Detroit Red Wings center didn't know what to think - but was excited to try it. Datsyuk has been using the stick with seven strategically placed holes toward the bottom of the shaft since December. He says it has improved his game and enticed him to put more shots on goal. "Now it's colored green and black," he said, jokingly. "What I need is (one that's) colored red and black because I'm on the Red Wings." Datsyuk was the first to adopt the stick, but others are slowly following suit. And more converts are likely after the stick's retail launch in May. In the meantime, Datsyuk isn't lending his out. "(It's a) big secret, I don't give it to nobody - it's mine," he said, adding that the new, light and whippy sticks are far from the wood ones with big curves he used growing up in Russia. "It's a big progress for sticks. It's what I needed."
  21. Detroit Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk is proving he doesn't have to be Henrik Zetterberg's wingman to rack up points. That wasn't the case the first two months of the season, when Datsyuk struggled without Zetterberg on his line. They formed a dominant pairing when they were reunited in early December, and now Datsyuk has continued to flourish after Zetterberg's absence due to a back injury. "It gives him confidence that he doesn't have to rely on Hank being there,'' Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. "Pavel's still producing and being the player he was when Hank was with him. (Datsyuk) gets so much attention, it helps the other players around him.'' Datsyuk is riding a 10-game scoring streak (three goals, 13 assists), equaling his career-high set on two occasions last season. He can establish a new career-high streak with a point in tonight's game at Calgary. "I don't look at the streak, I look at how many wins the team has,'' Datsyuk said. "It doesn't matter if I don't get a point as long as the team wins. '' Datsyuk has three goals and 11 assists in nine games since Zetterberg's injury and has moved into the team scoring lead with 77 points. He had just three goals and 12 assists in his first 25 games, before coach Mike Babcock reunited him with Zetterberg. "He's consistently creating scoring chances, which is pretty amazing looking at the way teams cover him,'' Wings defenseman Mathieu Schneider said. "Teams really have to double-up on him, he's very difficult to stop one-on-one. I think he's learned to use his linemates better, regardless of whether it's Hank.'' Datsyuk has moved back to center, flanked by Valtteri Filppula and Tomas Holmstrom. After missing the final seven games of the season and the first game of the playoffs a year ago due to a deep thigh bruise, Datsyuk is hoping to head into the postseason with some momentum. "He realizes the importance of taking his game to another level in the playoffs,'' Schneider said. "I think he's done a good job showing up in big games. He played great in those back-to-back games against Nashville (last week). As long as he's creating chances and making teams pay attention to him, that's what opens the door for other guys like (Jiri) Hudler and Filppula.'' The playoffs have been a nightmare for Datsyuk and the Wings since their Stanley Cup title in 2002. Datsyuk has not scored a goal in his last 26 postseason games. "I need to be playing better and better every game because playoffs are coming,'' Datsyuk said. "Now I try to shoot it more, I try more to score and not pass, so (the playoffs) may be a little bit different for me.''
