The Value of an Enforcer: Brad May/ The Misunderstood Point Sytem
b.shanafan14 replied to a topic in General
So...... the argument for May as an MVP is that his +/- could be worse and he fights? Fail. He plays the least minutes and never against the other teams snipers. And as for his fisticuffs, most of his fights have been not to "enforce" but to provide entertainment value (Barch) or to send a general message of "wake up guys, go get'em" in agreement with another enforcer. While both are admirable, neither have added much to the team's success. I have the utmost respect for what May does and I love him for it. I think he has been a solid addition to the team in that he hasn't hurt the team on the ice in his limited time, adds a character guy to the dressing room, and makes my hockey games more interesting when he starts to sling the kind of bombs he was laying on Boll last night (also being one of his only fights to take an actual "enforcer's" role, avenging hits on Datsyuk and Rafalski). But come on people, there is a serious disconnect between a guy we all like for being a bruiser and calling that guy one of our best players. We're all glad to have him, but saying Brad May could be our MVP with any kind of seriousness is just ridiculous. -
that didn't take long..... As others have said, this is way out of context and memorabilia shops often do charge a pretty hefty sum. I'm sure AO is getting a piece of the action, he is spending the time afterall, but this makes it sound like he is sitting there with a mayonnaise jar full of kids' allowance in one hand and a Sharpie in the other, turning away the poor and the unwashed.

Overall, I thought the list was at least pretty severely out of order.

I was a big supporter of Leino to begin the season. I really thought he was going to be somebody or at least do what it takes to be. I understand that what Helm does every shift is not typical of all players, but he doesn't come off as a guy in a drought who is doing all he can to get out of it. In just so many words, he basically said: "I'm a scorer. Other people win individual battles and backcheck well. Not me, I'm a scorer. I'm here to score and can't be bothered to do what Helm does, just isn't my thing." Well Ville, you're not looking like a scorer and haven't since the first month of the year when Filppula was making your whole line look incredible. So if you're a scorer who is not scoring and can't be bothered to do the other things that make you a serviceable hockey player in the NHL, why do you expect to stay in the NHL?

I agree with you. There is just a level of tenacity that, save Helm and on occasion a few others, this team hasn't reached yet. But at the moment, the place it is really needed is the PP. Our PP is too passive. Look at the 4on3 the Wings had last night as a perfect example. No one wants to shoot. And the worse part is, they overpass and then when they finally do attempt a shot, usually right as the PP is expiring, they either miss the net entirely or its from a horrendous angle anyways, so why dick around. The best part about Helm is he is busting tail every place and there seems to be little or no BS to his game. He plays with a desperation to make something good happen and its pretty inspiring to watch. Wings need more of Helm.

12/28 GDT: Red Wings 0 at Blue Jackets 1 (OT)

Yay.... shut out again.... thats refreshing.... -
Oh Sammy..... I officially miss you now. Happy?

Considering he was playing NHL hockey after not playing for two months, I think he was great.
-
Great news! I expect him to be playing with a huge chip on his shoulder. He was playing out of his mind before the injury and I think he was downright pissed off about the injury. Unfortunately, the Wings are a little low in the finishing wingers department and we may have to hope either Leino pulls his head out of his ass (unlikely) or Filppula has spent the last 2 months teaching his brain to think 'shoot first' (equally as unlikely). Either way, great news!

My heart.... DO NOT WANT

did anyone say it was dirty?

I can't seem to shake the feeling this is all somehow MY fault. But yeah, Kopecky was worse.

That is a pretty sad lineup right there. Only the ones in bold are legitimate NHL players with more that a season's experience. (Notice: Lebda is not bold)

I honestly have tried to find something wrong with the hit, and I can't. Other than it being to the head and Stajan getting a bit shaken up, I have no problem with it. Just kind of an issue of size mismatch.

Red Bird II pilot, mid-flight.

He has zero confidence. Started off playing pretty damn lights-out with Filppula to start the season, just wasn't getting the bounces and the points to show for it. Then as soon as Val got injured his confidence was shot, doesn't even look like the player he was last season or starting this one. He needs a shot in the arm big time. I think Filppula's return is gonna give this team a serious boost.

So now 6 teams are going instead of 4? Yay, waste of time and energy!

Mick popping up makes the video. So strange.... in a good way.

Did You Guys Know Kirk Maltby Was a 50-Goal Scorer In Juniors?
b.shanafan14 replied to RedWingsFanatic's topic in General
Every time he has had a scoring chance in the last 12 years Mick mentions that he was a 50-goal scorer in Junior, at this point I'd be surprised if anyone DIDN'T know it. -
haha love this highlight, think someone posts it every year at least once. Sweet hands, and kinda hilarious.

If they were, they blew it now. Its in KHL bylaws that you are forbidden to perform adequate life saving procedures. If you're in trouble you get a worried look and carried off in a lawn and leaf bag.

Agree. They have returned to being aggressive on the PK ala two years ago. Last season and the beginning of this one, they would all collapse down low and didn't put any pressure on the opposition, which is bad enough when the greater number of your guys near the crease actually clear rebounds, but it was rendered completely useless by all our guys standing around watching as the other team potted the rebounds. The PK seems to have returned to being tenacious and its really amazing how well clearing the zone when you have the chance instead of coughing it up again works, who'd have thunk that

This is something that has been a long-time coming, improved defense. Goaltending has been decently solid and the Wings are getting back to keeping the opposition to the outside. The one thing they need to improve on in clearing rebounds. Too many times this season there are 2 or 3 Wings near the crease watching a rebound sit there until 1 opposition player pots a gimmee and 2 or 3 Wings immediately look skyward.
