ESPN hating on the Wings... Surprise Surprise
b.shanafan14 replied to Antilles328's topic in General
Burnside rarely sides with the Wings, probably the same reason most don't. Sports writers usually like to pick teams that aren't the far and away favorite. If everyone guesses the best team is the best, they aren't "deep" or "knowledgable" enough. As far as the awards, no surprise there. Glad Datsyuk is in the conversation at least. He is there at the top in scoring, which is all they seem to care about, you'll never hear the argument "but he's also the best defensive forward". More likely to hear them mention the team around him. Not a surprise. As far as Lidstrom and the Norris, tho he has been consistently great this season, he doesn't have the offensive numbers to compete with a Mike Green if they decide to vote on offense and hasn't been the OUTWARDLY dominant defensive player that Chara has been. Nick is subtle, unfortunately, they aren't looking for subtle this season, and are definitely looking forward to runnning "_____ dethrones Norris Nick" as a headline instead of "Nick wins Norris. Again." -
What the Thrashers thought about Osgood tonight.
b.shanafan14 replied to Drake_Marcus's topic in General
I was really irritated by that win, which some (including my girlfriend) don't understand. When they had the 4 goal lead, they ended up just standing around in the defensive zone, and for at least 2 of the 3 goals against, Osgood might as well have been on his own. He played great, deserved a shutout or one goal against, but the team played very lackadaisical with the lead in the third. Sure they could score basically at will, but I would have preferred a 2-0 or 3-1 win any day. Either way, Ozzy has played great down the stretch, keep it up! -
Was roaming around the NHL section of ESPN.com, on the side in Headlines column reads Rumors: Hossa's future in Hockeytown http://insider.espn.go.com/nhl/features/ru...atures%2frumors Link leads to dated entries, with the title "Holland pursues talks with key free agents" on todays date (March 19). Unfortunately, they require ESPN Insider membership to view the article, like the nazis they are. Can anyone give us an insight?

Ovie was asked about Cherry in the post-game, didn't really hold back considering Cherry's criticism: "he's gonna be pissed off for sure", "old coaches, old system" http://watch.tsn.ca/nhl/clip151949#clip151949 I love it. I don't hate Cherry, but a lot of the time he has grown a little back asswards. Ron McLean deserves a medal, Cherry still has the ability to make some good points but then he often counters with a comment making him look like hockey's Bill O'Reilly

I assumed this was going to happen. Ozzy has played well for 3 straight and 4 of the past 5 or so. We need someone to step up, and since Ozzy has been hot lately, you're right, Its Osgood's job to lose. Lets hope he keeps it...

Thanks, was checking MLive, but they had no info, thanks for clearing it up. Yeah, ESPN is awesome, selling other sources info.

I like the idea of a soft cap. Anything that allows teams to keep the players they draft and develop and creates more revenue to be shared by the poorer teams is a win-win to me. But then again, I have zero decision making power in the NHL.

If true, Sid gets some credit from me. Seems a little half-baked tho, I would have to see proof.

Congrats to the great and powerful OZ! Two great games, now tied with Vernon for most career wins, 11th all-time. Gaining confidence at the right time, keep it up Ozzy.

Great Aaron Downey Interview w/Intern Mike (Video)
b.shanafan14 replied to sureWhyNot's topic in General
They honestly couldn't find anyone better than Intern Mike? The guy is painful to watch. Downey is awesome tho, terrific attitude -
Conspiracy theories are for the birds. The Wings are sloppy because of lack of motivation and focus. Veterans have nothing else to prove and the team as a whole is probably a bit exhausted, physically and mentally. They have been trying their hardest, while at the same time not playing even close to their potential. Taking games off is unacceptable, and while we can marvel at the Wings quietly holding first place while playing what we as spoiled fans consider sub-par, to believe the league is weak enough that any team could fall outta bed and win games without consistent effort is insulting.

I'm been silently frustrated with goaltending this year, but quick to try and squelch most of these goalie threads. Not going to way in on what should or shouldnt be done, just going to say I finally feel like many have all year, we're going to get embarrassed in the playoffs again. Last night was a perfect example of what we'll see in the playoffs, and more than either of the 8 goal nights they've had recently, that was a failure. Having a 4-1, taking a 4-2 lead into the last few minutes of the third, then letting in softy after softy to let them take the lead. It was blind luck to beat Kipper in the last minute to get a point out of it. First goal HAD to be a save, you take that stinker away and even with the breakdown, you may still have a win.

terrible game, looked lackadaisical all game, should have won, but like all season, they just let them score 3 times in 3 minutes and s*** the bed completely.

What does it say about the wings when they played like crap all season
b.shanafan14 replied to Phazon's topic in General
I like to think the same thing, that they need REAL games to reach their potential, but more and more i'm starting to get scared that maybe they aren't sick of regular season play as much as play all together. The hangover is a very scary and mysterious thing... -
Would the Wings be better off had they Pursued Goalie Instead of Hossa
b.shanafan14 replied to a topic in General
"You guys know this thread had to be coming" Yeah, since we almost went a whole week without a goalie thread . We know we don't have Brodeur in goal, we really need to get over it. If our defense played the way its capable, ie the way it did last season, we don't need an elite goaltender. If we had spent the money on an elite goaltender and our defense played the way it should, it would make the goaltender look very average and thusly make similar thread continue to pop up, except instead of "Osgood sucks for pennies on the dollar" it would be "Luongo looks average, money should have been spent elsewhere". As stormboy said, its easy during a stretch of poor goaltending 8 months after the fact to say we should have signed a great stopper, but at the time we addressed our two perceived needs after winning a Jennings trophy last season: elite scorer and capable backup. -
I agree, hockey is a real sport with ideal athletes where on the other hand, baseball players are paid much more to sit in a dugout for 3 hours, get up and swing a bat, and half of them need steroids to make it. Apologies to baseball fans, but in my opinion its not a sport, thats why its America's Pass time, passing time is all its good for. I can watch golf for hours, can't watch baseball.

Terrible Thoughts and Prayers to Gordie and the rest of the Howe clan....

Downey is an average enforcer with a highly above-average attitude. The guy is a great team guy and knows his role. We know what we had in Downey last season, good for some periodic additional sandpaper, but he isn't much more than competent in the other aspects of the game and thusly will never have a solid roster spot with the Red Wings. Good guy, but just like last playoffs, when the chips are down he won't be in the lineup.
-
damn, mislead me to believing we signed Hossa for next year or at least had an update.
-
I'd also love the Red Wings Weekly where they went on the road and maybe this week with Z and Pav for the table hockey championship thing. I know there are plenty of generous folks who would be happy to get such things for us

One good night amongst a season of flop does not a good player make.
