Having watched this travesty about a dozen times on youtube, the realization of the refs tortured logic became apparent. "The goal was a good goal. I blew the whistle AFTER the puck crossed the line. The whistle stops play. I stopped play after the puck crossed the line, hence the goal was a good goal. ERGO, AS AN OFFICIAL I ENGAGED IN THE CORRECT ACTION AND THE CORRECT OUTCOME IN THE COURSE OF PLAY WAS THE RESULT. ...but AFTER the correct call and the correct outcome of the play occurred, I decided that I probably INTENDED to make the incorrect call...NOT THAT I DID MAKE THE INCORRECT CALL, just that I probably (in retrospect) decided I INTENDED to make the incorrect call. THEREFORE, I intended to REVERSE the correct call on the correct outcome of the play in order to instill my own perceived incorrect call, thus resulting in the incorrect result of the play AFTER the play is over. I am therefore--as an official--asserting my authority to override my correct officiating with the correct outcome in order to impose the possibility that I wished to make the incorrect call." I'm trying to think of analogies to this in the real world but none come to mind.

You seem like a decent hockey guy...some suggestions: 1) There are certain parts of Detroit you definitely want to avoid. If you want to enjoy, however, you might want to park in Highland Park and take the bus/cab/or walk to the game. Highland Park is, naturally, a park and will show the best side of Detroit...if you're coming all this way you might as well have a good time. 2)Wings fans are EXTREMELY tolerant of stuff ending up on the ice...observe the octopus! If you feel the Duks get a bad call, give up a goal, score a goal, get in a fight, etc., CHUCK SOMETHING ON THE ICE!!!! Cups of beer are best! 3)There are several statues around the arena of hockey fossils, such as Gordie Howe. Tradition states that opposing fans get a picture of themselves in front of these statues screaming "These old bastards don't know s*** about hockey compared to (fill in the blank with your team.) 4)Wings fans wear jerseys, LOTS of jerseys of current and former players. We do it because we kind of like to reminisce about the good old days before the Wings became too old/slow/lazy/European/goalie-lacking/defense-lacking/young/weak/not-hungry-enough/lacking grit/etc. Since it's kind of a joke to us, play along as do fans of all other visiting teams. If you see a fan wearing an Yzerman jersey, for example, it's kind of tradition to go up to that fan and yell (since you're a Duks fan) "Pronger/ Niedermayer (sporting your respective jersey) owned that ***** Yzerman his whole career. You suck!" Usually everybody has a good laugh and somebody ends up buying a beer. 5)Obviously, Detroit and the state of Michigan are in a depression (recession passed a LONG time ago.) Since we all are past being bothered by more bad news, it's kind of tradition for other fans to make fun of Detroit as you're standing in line to get in, waiting in line for the bathroom, for beer, or just during breaks in play. We envy California's warm weather and higher standard of living, so a mantra of stuff like, "Hey, you people live in a s***ty city! Your city sucks as much as your team does! Bet you wish you lived in Anaheim! Ha Ha, you SUCK!" Wings fans are used to this and kind of just go along for the ride...they'll probably buy you a beer! 6)Don't worry about tickets...they'll be there. However, since the economy is so bad you will probably want to negotiate price. In order to do this, you should have small bills available. Obviously, you're not coming from California with less than $100 bills, so just stop kids in the neighborhoods and say "Hey...Boy...you got change for these hundreds?" This is the best approach to getting cheap tickets! Hope these suggestions work for you. Looking forward to seeing you at the game!

ON THE CONTRARY... I now live just across the border outside of Toledo. I'm a life-long Wings (and Komets) fan. I also have season tickets to Purdue football (did undergrad and doctorate there.) Twenty -five years ago, every Purdue fan knew the most malevolent, car-keying, child-shoving, foul-mouthed fans came from that place in South Bend. HOWEVER, over the last 10-15 years the concensus (and this is talking to fans at Penn State, Iowa, and all the other Big Ten schools as well) is that Ohio State fans have surpassed those from the school in South Bend with their unprecedented level of douchiness. I will give them kudos for their unbridled success, and they deserve to be proud. But a couple of years ago when we beat Ohio State AT WEST LAFAYETTE the O.S. fans were engaged in unbelievable levels of nasty smack, jumping on cars, and being scum. The main thing is it JUST ISN'T THE STUDENTS, adults were just as bad. When you lose on the road, STFU, slink back to your car and hit the road. I truly believe there is a culture of classlessness from O.S. Heck, their former President said as much!
