I dont want to turn this into a Vlad bash because I love the guy and he was great but before the accident he wasnt universally loved by Wings fans. Probert was arguably as popular as Stevie Y and was an all-star while playing with the Wings before they became really succesful under Scotty Bowman. Im not saying Probert was better than Vladdy I'm just saying that they should have retired his number for at least one season.
-
You can make a case that Probert did as much as Vladdy did for this team and this city and Vlad's number is still out of circulation.
-
I dont like to speak for someone but I assumed he meant just keep it out of circulation for one season or so, not retire it. I would have liked that to happen also.

Saw this on Rotoworld: Willie Mitchell (concussion) has been medically cleared to participate in physical testing. This is good news for Mitchell as he is currently an unrestricted free agent looking for a job. He has been sidelined since Jan. 16 and since he spent 100 days on the injured reserved list last season, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune is reporting that he has the right to sign a one-year, bonus-laden contract in the salary range of $1-1.5 million per season. That could make him a more attractive free agent option for any team willing to take the risk to sign him.

Saw this at Rotoworld today: Mike Modano-C- Stars Jul. 13 - 7:28 am et It is beginning to look as if Mike Modano will not be headed to Detroit. The Red Wings have around $3 million to spend on remaining contracts and still have to re-sign three players (Derek Meech, Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm) so their offer to Modano likely wasn't enough to entice the long-time member of the Stars. The Red Wings and Modano have not talked since Friday. "We would love to have Mike join us, but we only have a certain amount to spend," GM Ken Holland said. Stay tuned as the Sharks, Wild and Blackhawks could also be interested in Modano's services.

Detroit Free Press Saw this and thought it was interesting. I might like Damon again if hes not in pinstripes.

I suspect we have seen the last game by Mr. Maltby in the winged wheel. Hats off to you Kirk, may the grind line live forever.

Don't expect much from the Wings during Trade Deadline
up2here replied to ShanahanMan's topic in General
I wouldnt want any other GM for the Wings. GM's make mistakes and thats one of Holland's, I'm sure he would tell you that himself.... ok I have never met Ken Holland and I actually have no idea what he would say, but it sounded good. -

Ive been through this Quincy thing before. It IS true that Quincey was given chances and didnt perform. Its also true that neither Meech or Lebda were much better if at all. I'm also sure it was a very difficult decision for Holland but he made the wrong choice plain and simple. Maybe theres not even another GM out there who would have kept Quincey in Hollands shoes, doesnt matter. Wrong choice. -

I'd like to see Afinogenov with Datsyuk and Homer. Then Zetterberg,Franzen Bertuzzi. I should stop before this becomes a line combo thread. -

No, i am bored of it too. I am also sick of the so-called word 'pwned'. -
I recently made a thread about Chelly's performance in the AHL. I thought that there had to be an NHL team that could use him as their 6th or 7th man.

Your numbers are probably right. I was using a 2009 formula and assuming it would be close. -

Hopefully someone can come up with the Wings actual current cap number. But for arguments sake $300,000 would equal a player making about 1.4 million. -

I wouldnt mind Afinogenov coming either and he's much cheaper than Kozlov. Again it depends on how exactly close the Wings are to the cap. Using the formula I got from NHL.com: 800,000 (Afinogenov salary) / 187 (Days in the season) X 41(Days left in the season)= 175,000 Use the same formula for Lebda going out: 650,000/187 X 41 = 143,000 Now were only talking about 30,000 bucks at this point. -

I'm not sure Kozlov is the answer either but because the salary numbers are much smaller now the trade does become possible. If the Wings have a couple hundred thousand to play with ( Im not sure what the actual cap number is) then moving someone like Jason Williams and Brett Lebda might get it done cap wise. -
Don't expect much from the Wings during Trade Deadline

UPDATE: I found this on NHL.com: How is a player's salary charged against a team's salary cap when a trade is made at the deadline? The salary that is charged against a team's cap is the pro rated amount remaining of the player's average yearly salary. For example, if a player has an average yearly salary of $2 million, the amount charged against the acquiring team's cap is the pro-rated amount remaining of $2 million. This is calculated by dividing $2 million by the number of days in the season (187). The amount ($10,695) is then multiplied by the number of days remaining in the season from the day the trade is made (41 days if trade is on deadline day) to ascertain the amount charged against the team's cap ($438,502). Using that formula, the Wings would have to pay Kozlov 803 k. -

You're incorrect. Kozlov makes 3.66 mil but the Wings would only be on the hook for about a 1/4 of that. If my math is right thats less than 1 mil. He's UFA next year. -
So I looked up Chelly's number to see how he's doing this year and I was amazed. 44 GP 21 PTS +35 The old man has still got some left and with numbers like that its hard to beleive he couldnt be the 6th or 7th defenseman on an NHL team.
-
While stats dont mean EVERYTHING they certainly are meaningful. As i've said many time, I dont think Chelly can be a 1st to 4th D-man on an NHL team. But I have to beleive he could be a 5th or 6th guy on a few teams out there. I hope you werent trying to insult my hockey knowledge because I am as much of an 'expert' as anyone on these forums. Which is to say not an expert all but I think I am.
-
You do realize though, that he has as many points as Jakub Kindl in 7 less games and his +/- is 42 points better. I'm not saying hes 3rd or 4th defensman but he's outplaying MANY players half his age that the speed of the game hasnt supposedly passed by.

Mike Milbury uses 'Eurotrash game' to describe Russian hockey
up2here replied to Ruys92's topic in General
Mike Milbury attends the "Don Cherry School For Hockey". You know the school where they teach you hockey skills from the 60's and where they dont care that the game has passed you by. -
Cmon man. For one thing there are more Sharks on Team Canada than Ducks. The only reason Getzlaf was saying anything was because the Russians were crying and getting dirty.
-
No need to worry about any Swedes against Canada now.
-
Im not sure I would I would rather have Lebda than Chelly.
