Maybe in the distant future, like 25+ years. The way it is, there are about 25-30 players cut from team Canada every year that we'd love to have play for team USA. We have a lot of high-end talent at all the positions, but not enough depth to hope to compete at this point.

I would agree that we should wait until we see more than one game with Ericsson before putting him into the playoff roster, but both he and Leino have come out of the minors and been better than a number of our roster players.

I think the only problem with the defense has been the lack of focus. We've seen that they can play fine. They manhandled San Jose twice, so we know they can do it. It just seems they don't get motivated every game. I'm hoping the playoffs can change that.

Did you ever watch the Stanley Cup Finals in 2002? You'd forget that the Red Wings were actually playing someone else by all the attention they got.

In my mind, Helm is easily the fastest on the wings. But in the NHL, it's probably Gaborik, and if he ever plays again, Steve Sullivan was about as fast as they come.

I thought this was going to be a joke topic at first. Everybody was saying the first move Burke would make was to acquire Brad May. Is he secretly Brian Burke's son or something?

Yeah, but we have Tom McCollum, an outstanding OHL goaltender at 19 of age, so what's your point? The Red Wings had their choice between the two and decided that McCollum was the better goaltender. We don't have to draft a player just because they're Swedish. Anyway, I'm sure the Red Wings stand behind their decision, as they've already signed McCollum (and the Red Wings rarely sign a player before his old contract runs out, and McCollum's had a few more years left), so I think that speaks volumes.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I think starting the season out like this is actually a good thing for a couple reasons: 1. There's not nearly the pressure anymore to be the greatest team ever and break the regular season wins and points records. 2. The Wings aren't getting any of their wins for free at this point. They're almost re-learning how to win a hockey game. That's what they had to do February of last year, and I truly believe that without that losing streak, the Wings would never have won the cup. Times like this build experience. You have to learn what it takes to win, because there won't be any free wins in the playoffs.
