My only problem with Bert is his tendency to take dumb penalties. If he'd learn not to take those terrible slashing, tripping and roughing penalties at the worst possible time he'd be a much more valuable commodity. I'm with you on adding an abrasive, heart and soul kind of guy. He doesn't even have to have tons of scoring upside. In my opinion the Wings need to find two players: one PK specialist who can hit and take care of himself (and make the Wings tougher to play against... think a younger Drake) and one top 6 winger (or project player with top 6 potential and PK/grit as his current specialty). With that in mind, here are the guys I'd like the Wings to take a run at: 1. Pyett 2. Eaves (only if he comes cheap, he's a project not a top 6 player right now) 3. Malhotra 4. Grier and if they're real desperate: 5. Peca (I see him as someone who could be another Dallas Drake-- frighteningly disappointing in the regular season but a fantastic element in the post season if he stays hungry and healthy enough)

I'd prefer to see Chelios working within the Wings organization somewhere. His commitment, passion and dedication to his physical training is an example every one of the young prospects in the system should have a chance to emulate. Chelios may be done as an impact hockey player, but I don't think he has to be done making an impact in the game of hockey.

No way I'd put Chelios over Lidstrom or Orr. Anyone who thinks Chelios was ever better than Lidstrom is likely not seeing the subtle perfection of Lidstrom. Chelios was flashier than Lidstrom. Lidstrom was better. There's no shame in that. The only guy I'd put over Lidstrom is Orr.

I'd love the Wings to take a run at Pyett. He's just the kind of player we need. Could be a younger Cleary.

I've got no problem with trying one of those two players depending on how much they want. I like Malhotra and would love to see him get a shot here.

Hudler put up great numbers for someone who played on the 4th and 3rd line all fricking playoffs. Hossa's the guy who got paid 7.45 million dollars to disappear in the finals. How many points did you expect Hudler to score in his 10 minutes a game?

And by score as much as Hudler you mean half as much as Hudler, right? I mean we are talking about their actual stats last year... Eaves has yet to be as successful as Hudler.

Your understanding of Filppula's talent is waaayyyy off. Sorry man, but he hasn't got the hands to put up 65 pts. He already had more than 18 mins a game last year, adding 2 mins of powerplay time will not boost his scoring by more than 50%. He just doesn't have the hands to get "at least 65 points this year". Filppula averaged just over 16 mins a game last year. He had just under a minute of average PP time. Let's say he gets Hudler's PP time. Now he's playing 3 mins of PP time a game. Cool. Filppula managed 1 goal and 3 assists on the PP last year. So let's say his time triples-- now he's got 3 goals and 9 assists. That's 8 more points. Now his ice time has jumped up to 18 mins, more than Hossa averaged last year. Filppula's generous new total is 48pts. A career year for someone with his offensive talent. It should also be noted that if Filppula's the new replacement for Hudler on the PP our 2nd unit is considerably less talented. Hudler's offensive skill is at least twice that of Filppula.

The cap numbers I quoted did not include Fernandez. They're about 3 million over the cap without Fernandez.

The Bruins are 3.4 million over the cap right now with the following: 14 Forwards (5 of them make over 3.5 million, Kessel is not included in this list of D-men) 6 D-men (the bottom 3 each make between 1.3 and 1.45 million-- this should be trimmed down) 2 Goalies (one is 3.2 million, Rask, which is a huge problem) How would freeing up 2.5 million by dumping a D-man pay for Kessel? That D-man is not extra- he has to be replaced, and he was their #3 man on top of that, so he needs to be replaced with someone capable of playing that position. Kessel wants at least 4 million a year. Let's say you dump Ward and move a prospect in to fill the 6th spot. Ok, now you've got 1.5 million to go towards the 4 million Kessel wants but now your D-core just lost significant depth. The real speculation on this move was that it was possibly to free up space for Kaberle. Now they've got a good young guy in Morris, but I wouldn't be surprised if that pick up of Morris is in effect a sign and trade. Maybe they plan to trade Morris and Kessel to the Leafs for Kaberle and a pick or prospect? The Leafs want a d-man who can quarterback the PP and is relatively young if they're going to move Kaberle, at least in my opinion. They also want a top 6 forward. Moving Morris and Kessel for Kaberle and a pick/prospect would make sense here. I'm not sure why the Bruins are so gung-ho on Kaberle... it must be because they want a legit 2nd PP quarterback.
