To an extent, he is. Having Rafalski back is a game-breaker right now. These two teams are playing so damn close... adding a top 10 scoring defenseman to one would most definitely be a huge difference.

That isn't a fair characterization of Lilja this season. He's the only d-man that got better defensively between last season and this season.

(assuming Draper is out and Rafalski is in) How 'bout: Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Holmstrom Hossa-Franzen-Hudler Cleary-Filppula-Samuelsson Kopecky-Helm-Leino Lidstrom-Rafalski Kronwall-Stuart Ericsson-Lebda Commentary: The Franzen line seems a bit weird, but we've seen before that Franzen is a very capable centre on the draw and we all know Hudler is capable of setting everyone up. My first instinct was to put Filppula on the second line as a centre, but I'd rather keep him on the third to make that line more capable of doing damage. In my opinion, Filppula does much better as a 3rd line centre that's not being matched up against than he does as a 2nd line centre. Helm's line will create havoc (since Helm is fricking sweet on the forecheck), but without a solid offensive player added it's mostly wasted aside from wearing the opposition's d-men down. Adding Leino suddenly makes that line dangerous (see his performance in the NHL this year and his performance in the AHL- where he led the league in scoring through the first round- 11pts in 6 games).

You'd be shocked how many players could be described as ghosts in the playoffs until ______ happened. Not many players can say they were high end playoff contributors from day one.

Conklin won't be here unless the Wings get an unexpectedly generous offer on Howard. Howard's out of options in the minors, so expect to see him as the backup next season. And the odds of Abdelkader being anywhere but in GR next year are somewhere below 1 in 100. Abdelkader was a pro rookie this season- he's got tons of time left in the minors unless the Red Wings disregard their practice of letting nearly all their prospects slowly mature. They don't have to use him yet so they likely won't. Leino will be in Detroit because they want to keep him and there will be an open spot for an impressive 25 year old rookie with years and years of pro experience.
