Good post until the top ten bomb was dropped. Honestly- just poorly written comedy. There's a reason why Dave has professional comedy writers do his jokes. So other then the poorly written jokes in the top ten (and it's not the subject matter- I still think the dead things is fairly clever as far as derisive team names go) I enjoyed reading that post. I'm sure everyone is richer for having read my post.

Two completely different concepts here- a Kevlar vest is intended to prevent penetration of a projectile/sharp hand weapon. Kevlar does not protect the wearer from the blunt force trauma. Goalie gear is not intended to prevent penetration. Goalie gear is intended to absorb the force of an impacting puck and minimise blunt force trauma. The fact remains that thickness is directly proportional to the protection offered. As the puck deforms the material it transfers kinetic energy into the work needed to deform that material. Of course the specifics of that material are very important- playing with density, elastic properties, ...etc will change how much energy is needed to deform a unit volume. So yes, you can have certain materials that will offer the same protection in a smaller thickness, but I've got no clue what the engineering design specifics are for a high-end chest protector, and no idea what the economic factors are. A superthin composite chest protector that costs $30,000 is pretty fricken useless at this point, and the research cost of developing this materials may not be a logical expense in the light of the fact that current technology works just fine. Most innovation is incremental- a little tweak here or twist there. Kevlar was a leap forward in materials engineering. You can't demand leaps like that every day- they're rarer then we all wish. AND we could finally make more accurate comparisons between old time goalies and modern goalies. How good would Sawchuck have been with modern gear?

In terms of Pad width and height I'll agree. Same goes for trapper and blocker size. The chest gear and pad thicknesses aren't really a big deal, and do contribute to the blocking effects of the gear. With composite sticks and increasing training focus on minute details players are shooting harder and faster- goalie equipment should be given the liberty of at least maintaining the original level of protection. I don't buy the argument that chest protectors are oversized to any great extent, but I do think that they pads, trapper and blocker are all comically oversized. Yeah, I think it's adorable when people try and make up their own explanations to unexplained events and come up with a magical solution. But then again I'm a scientist, it's my job to be skeptical

I really don't see Cleary going for 0.7 next year, unless he's locking in a contact already. He'll likely end up with 25 goals with the potential to have been 30+ had he not been injured. After his run early in the season and his continued play even in his goal scoring slump (when he was still a damn good forward, just not putting up points) he's definitely worth 1.5. No? Also I don't see Hasek returning for a minimum like that after his play this season. That assumes he does great in the playoffs. If we see vintage playoff Hasek (and when I say vintage I mean 2002 and hell- even how he's played in his best games this season) we'll see a higher price next year, no? I'm not an expert on hockey payrolls so correct me if I'm off track here.

Everyone who likes Huddles is right and everyone who dislikes him is wrong. That's what I say. I wuv huddles. He's got tons of energy, doesn't give up on plays and has great hands. I also think he's got the touch of a 30+ goal scorer (well later in his career at least!). Honesly I think Filp and Huddles are great prospects, but Huddles impresses me the most of all the rookies this year.

I actually think it's good that we were destroyed instead beaten in a squeaker. As I've said before, and many of you likely feel, a utter embarassment like tonight's game is like starving an animal before the hunt. You let a half-starved wolf out of the cage in front of a rabbit and that rabbit is in reeeeealllll trouble. If we had lost to the Sabres (well the full strength Sabres) in a hard-fought battle the psychological effect on Tuesday's game wouldn't have been the same. Of course this effect would be enhanced by having a key player return to the line-up... but I don't see that happening.

More importantly it's a pointless debate. They're both on the Wings, they're not fighting for their positions- we all know who's the starter and who's the backup and it's not changing this season, and they're both established goalies with the hardware to back them up. No where's that dead horse emoticon?
