Prospects That Have Missed The Boat

Tatar's been as good as Nyquist in GR this year... he's really been excellent-- especially with his play off the puck. Tatar's compete level is huge even if he's not.

    [Retired] Official Lockout Thread

Ultimately Bettman is the captain of the ship and if the ship runs aground 3 times he needs to take responsibility. That's why he's paid $8,000,000 a year. He doesn't need to be coddled or given excuses that the other side is tough to negotiate with. He's in charge and ultimately failure or success rests at his feet. This lockout is unquestionably a failure from many perspectives. Only the hardline group of 6-8 owners and Bettman himself seem to be happy with the situation.

Sacrifice the full season to guarantee Bettman's removal?

Do you have a source I can read for this? I was under the impression the owners had all the power and Bettman was their day to day guy and public figurehead.

    Bouwmeester opinions? Potential trades? *merged*

That's great, no one is suggesting emmerton for bouwmeester but if they seriously want Nyquist, Filppula or Smith for a guy who hasn't cracked 30pts in the last 3 years they can go find a sucker somewhere else. Even if Bouwmeester is worth that to someone else he's not worth that to this team. The Wings simply can't afford to trade young talent away with Dats and Z both entering the twilight of ther careers.

    Bouwmeester opinions? Potential trades? *merged*

Honestly if we trade much for this grossly overpaid sub-30pt player I'll lose myf****** mind. I didn't whine once about the FA stuff this summer (mostly because I didn't share the hilariously unrealistic expectations people had about Holland overpaying for players and spending up to a cap for which all signs point to it dropping, hence the non-garbage teams refusing to spend up to it unless they have to). Calgary's been looking to offload this terrible contract. Holland shouldn't overpay no matter what. This team isn't a top pairing d-man away from being a serious contender and all of our superstars are getting old fast.

    Mezaros tears Achilles tendon

It's a shame that Holland is so careful making deals... if he ahd Holmgrem's balls maybe he'd also have Holmgrem's Stanley Cup rings

Doan staying in PHX 4 yrs $21.2 mill

Anyone who gives Doan 30mil over 4 years is a moron. He's 37 years old and good for 50ish points right now. That deal's going to look Gomez bad in a few years. The most I'd offer him is 5 mil a year for 3 years... and that's overpaying for the last year of the deal but worth it given the market right now. 7.5 million a year for a Doan from agest 37-41 is laughable. And that's exactly what's wrong with the league today. It all started with the foolish bidding from Philly and NYR back when Gomez and Drury went to market.

Semin signs one year, $7m deal with Carolina

The other thing with Semin is the Datsyuk factor. Datsyuk's played with Semin on more than a few occasions... you've got to assume that Holland spoke to Dats about Semin to see what he thought about the guy. Not really because the cap hit was more manageable and in the end that's what matters. I agree that Carter was a risk, though. But props to LA for making the bold moves and having them look brilliant 12 months later.

Semin signs one year, $7m deal with Carolina

The other thing to realize here is that this team has a whole lot more to worry about than a top six winger. Datsyuk and Zetterberg are the only superstars left on this team and both are leaving the window for their prime years. The last thing we should want is to become the Leafs of the last decade who spent ten years carefully avoiding any shot at a top 4 pick while wasting money making the team just good enough to get eliminated in the 1st round. Sure they do, but if any of the contracts recently signed were legitimately competitive you'd see those top teams winning out. The only way garbage teams like Carolina and Minny get top free agents is by paying out of their nose... and this year it's been pretty pronounced. With the contracts Parise and Suter signed in Minny you've got to think other teams got calls from the agents for those two with a chance to match or top it and no one did... that speaks volumes.

Semin signs one year, $7m deal with Carolina

Holland's not the only guy who refuses to pay way over market value... all of the legitimate contenders feel that way. Look at who's signed these silly contracts so far... all of the teams are jokes. Pitts, Det, Bos, SJ, Chi, LA, who else? None of those teams have been willing to take on the terrible contracts or cave to the demands of guys like Howeson. The Rangers didn't get Nash cheaply but they got him a hell of a lot cheaper than we would have (anyone who thought Nash would get traded within the Central Division is nuts anyway). The Wings offer for Nash was reportedly a significant one and included 4 players (two of whom had to legitimate roster players based on the minimum requirements set out by Howeson) and he didn't even respond wiht a counter-offer. Guys like Left will say it's because Holland lowballed Howeson but that's utter bulls***. In negotiations you give a counter-offer when you get lowballed unless it is insultingly low and if it was there wouldn't have been reports that it was a significant offer from insiders (no one in there right mind is going to leak that info if they made a s***ty offer just to have the Jackets leak that it was a terrible one... well not unless they love dealing with annoying reporters for months, so I guess only Torts would do that).

Semin signs one year, $7m deal with Carolina

It's 100% about salary structure. Holland will be negotiating with a few guys on extensions this year and that would be really tough to do if you just signed a guy with a terrible rep and hilariously declining production to the highest cap hit on the entire team...

Semin signs one year, $7m deal with Carolina

There's nothing funnier than listening to you whine about Holland not paying Semin 7 million. You're the one who bitched and moaned about Hudler and laughed that Calgary paid him 4 million a year. Hudler produced 25g/50pts and is getting 4 million a year. Semin produced 21g/54pts and is getting 7 million a year.... all while being a drama queen last year who was benched multiple times for not making a big enough effort on the ice. Oh, and on top of that Semin makes Franzen look like a gritty work-horse. But you'd gladly make him the highest paid player on the team ... You do realize that once you sign a guy for way more than he's worth you can't legitimately pay the rest of your team fair-market value when their contracts are up, right? If Holland breaks the salary structure to bring in someone who isn't a bonefide superstar he's f***ed when Datsyuk, Filppula, Smith and Nyquist are up for re-signing.

Semin signs one year, $7m deal with Carolina

Exactly. It's an insult to compare the Semin of the last 2 years to Kovy or Hossa. Holland would have gladly handed 7 mil to either of those two. There's a reason why the best Semin could do was the freaking Hurricanes.

Semin signs one year, $7m deal with Carolina

Wow... you have to admire Semin's agent. Let's look at his history: 1st contract after rookie year: 4.6mil cap hit, 2 year long, Washington 08-09: 62gp / 34g / 79pts (1.27pt/g , 0.55 g/g) 09-10: 73gp / 40g / 84pts (1.15 pt/g, 0.55 g/g) RFA contract: 6mil cap hit, 1 year long, Washington 10-11: 65gp / 28g / 54pts (0.83 pt/g, 0.43 g/g) 1st UFA contract: 6.7mil cap hit, 1 year long, Washington 11-12: 77gp / 21g / 54pts (0.70 pt/g, 0.27 g/g) 2nd UFA contract: 7 mil cap hit, 1 year long, Carolina 12-13: lol Who wouldn't want to keep getting raises as your reward for plummeting performance? Semin's goals per game was half his established peak level two years prior and only 63% of where it was the year before. Now top all that off with constant grumbles across the league about his poor attitude. Hilarious stuff. To be honest I think it has a lot to do with the cap uncertainty at this point. Holland doesn't want to swallow a poison pill contract just yet.

Logo Hunter vs. Missing the Net - Fight!

This is more a symptom of the type of game they play. Both guys are volume shooters and with that comes a lot of redirected and deflected shots that go high and wide (and yeah, hilarious misses too) I see missed shots as being similar to strikes... sometimes it's because you whiffed but other times you were just on the wrong side of the foul pole.

Predators match offer sheet to Shea Weber

I'm guessing most of the forwards in the Atlantic Division feel that way about the Preds matching the Flyers' offer.

Who is your favorite player from a team besides the Wings?

Remember the version of Ovechkin we saw from 2005-2009? The recklessly enthusiastic, cannonball shot towards the net Ovechkin? That guy was definitely my favourite non-Red WIng at the time (excluding ex-Wings like Feds who I had a soft-spot for until the very end). I saw Ovechkin play at the Worlds back in the summer of 08 when they were in Quebec City (I think that was when it was) and he was just so fun to watch out there. Despite all of his faults, Ovi can be a really fun player to watch. Same goes for Crosby... I don't really care for him on a personal level but I could watch him play hockey all day and never get bored. Even though he's a natural centre, I'd love to see Crosby play on Datsyuk's wing. The sheer level of creativity on a Crosby-Datyuk line would be mind-boggling. I'd pay to watch Babcock shoot Spezza dirty looks for not back-checking.
  18. You have to read the guy's reasoning. Basically he's evaluating the entire pool itself, not the eliteness of one or two guys. He basically says that having 5 guys who are 7-8 out of 10 is better than 2 who are 9 out of 10.

Rick Nash traded to the New York Rangers

When Howeson refused to even reply to a legitimate offer like Holland made it's pretty clear he has zero intention of making a trade. If I make you a lowball offer and you're even remotely interested in trading with me your response will be to make a counter-offer. As far as Suter and Parise go? The Wings were the only team other than Minny to get a face-to-face meeting with Suter in the days before he signed with the WIld. Holland obviously didn't "low-ball" Suter or he wouldn't have bothered with a face-to-face. The Wild handcuffed themselves by taking two guys on for huge cap-hits for the next 13 years. They paid well over market for a life-time contract. If Holland blows his load on Suter AND Parise at that price he'd have a hell of a time re-signing Datsyuk, Filppula, Smith and Nyquist over the next two years. It's not Holland's job to give antsy Wings fans something to tweet about by signing every big name player each summer while ignoring how it impacts the team's cap situation for the next 13 years. There's a reason why the Wild landed Suter and Parise instead of a legitimate franchise.

Rick Nash traded to the New York Rangers

For sure. The last thing a GM is going to do when he's forced to trade his franchise player is trade him to his biggest division rival so he has to see the guy 6 times a year.

Visnovsky files NHLPA grievance to void NYI trade

I saw this on the twitter feed for Spector's Hockey and I was about to post something about it. Visnovsky could be a useful pick-up for the Wings. I imagine the Islanders may be willing to trade him after this grievance filing (then again, they kept Nabby around after he loudly proclaimed he wouldn't play for them). The Islanders had to trade a 2nd round pick to the Ducks for him so maybe we could get him for the same price (even though and Islanders 2nd is nearly a Wings 1st).

    Holland Content with Current Roster

Yeah but Tootoo can do something McGrattan and Belak can't-- play hockey at an NHL level. And to be fair to Tootoo he didn't have Belak at all this year (RIP Wade ) and McGrattan only played 30 games for the Preds. Yip (2), Guastad (4) and McGrattan (7) were the only guys with more than one major penalty (Tootoo had 6). Of those guys only Yip played the full year with the Preds (Guastad was a deadline pick-up and McGrattan played 30 games after he was grabbed off waivers). Last year Tootoo really didn't have the luxury of being a secondary tough guy most of the year. Hudler scored 25goals and had 50pts last season. It's pretty pie in the sky to expect Brunner to walk in as a rookie and replace that production. We should be happy if Brunner can crack 15g/30pts as a rookie and work upwards from there.

Add Maltby to the list of guys we loved here in Detroit even though the pissed off the rest of the league. Definitely. Boarderline toughguys tend to play more boldly when they're not the only guy stirring the s*** out there.

Impressive goals there. If Brunner nets 20-25 goals as a rookie he'll be pissed at missing Calder eligibility (or maybe he's just on the boarder of it? I'm not sure when he turns 27). I hope your expectations that Sammy and Brunner will both outproduce Hudler's 25g/50pts from last season are correct. I believe it was the title of an Mlive article with the original Holland quotes in it. The reactionists on the boards took that info and ran as far off the edge of the cliff as they could.
