Nabokov claimed by NYI, refuses to report, suspended

First - You assume that Nabby reports and plays up to expectations. If he reports and doesn't play well due to lack of motivation the first part of the win/win is a lose. Second, if the contract is tolled and have a goalie with a no trade clause so Nabby gets to decide if he wants to veto the trade and that makes it damn near impossible to trade him. So that's also a lose. The ONLY way that this is a win/win is if Nabby wakes up one morning and decides that he wants to play for the Islanders. Based on what he has said previously, this is not going to happen. On paper, it's a win/win but hockey isn't played on paper.

He didn't get ANYTHING for free. He has a piece of paper - that's it. A player that doesn't want to play for you is worthless. Snow could force him to play but what would the point be? What if Snow forces him to play and he's not any good (maybe due to lack of motivation). Please explain what Snow got for nothing that is worth anything.

I doubt it. Nabby made $6mil his last year in the NHL. Do you think that he will sign for $2mil or less? As far as the Islanders, there would be no point in him showing up. Why would any GM want a guy on his team that doesn't want to be there? If Snow had any brains (which he doesn't) he would just waive Nabby. No way that the Wings would trade for him since the Wings would then have to give up something and he'd still have to clear waivers. My bet is Snow just waives him and nobody but Detroit claims him. Anybody that wants to claim him will first make a phone call to Nabby's agent to see if he will report.

Nabby had his best playoff year last year. I'd take him in a heartbeat.

No. It was a stupid move on his part. It blew-up in his face. He has so far gotten nothing out of it but a public feud with Nabakov and his agent. Nabakov doesn't have a Islanders uniform on does he? He said in an interview with MSG that he didn't even consider that Nabakov wouldn't report. Why? Everybody else in the world thought that it might happen.... No. That violates rule 34.2.1.3.2.b and is subject to a $3.5 million fine and the loss of 3 first round draft picks which states that "No player may willingly fake his death in order to circumvent the cap unless he is Sydney Crosby or another player whom Sydney appoints as a stand in"

I disagree. I think that confidence is knowing that you can do it AND being willing to try. All of them know that they can score but sometimes they hold back or pass the puck to a guy like Pavel rather than shooting it. I've never played hockey before but if I was on the ice with a superstar like Pavel, I'd want to get him the puck even though I knew that I can score myself. There are a ton of guys like Mickey Redmond and Mike Babcock that agree.. Just my 2 cents worth.

The negativity is astounding. "they don't look capable" ? Are you fricking kidding. You don't remember what happened last March. Cut the negative BS. It's only January. Every team goes through tough spots. In February 2008, we lost 9 out of 10 in one stretch.

Well, since there are 12 teams with a higher GAA than the Wings, you aren't thinking very hard. The Wings will be fine. Chicago was well rested and healthy. We played less than 48 hours ago and also had to travel. Plus, you might have heard, we have a few guys out. One more game then we get back Dats, Cleary and probably Homer plus we actually get some rest...

I'm with you. That intent to blow the whistle is just stupid. Review the frickin play on video. If the puck crosses the line before the goalie has it under control, it's a goal regardless who blew a whistle, who thought about blowing a whistle or who dreamed about blowing a whistle. Why is it so difficult?

Every team should be allowed to sign any free agent up to the trade deadline for whatever price they want as long as they are under the cap and they pay at least the minimum. This includes the teams I hate. This waiver crap is just stupid.

Yea but he made $6M last year. We won't have alot of cap space this summer even if Nick retires.

Agreed but the two Blues players both went to teams in the playoff hunt. The Islanders though? I'll bet Nabby is not happy.

Ok. I was wrong. But this makes no friggin sense. The Islanders will not make the playoffs but they are going to use a 35 year old goalie who they will lose in 3 months instead of letting one of the youngsters develop? And I thought that Chicago was a train wreck of an organization. I guess I forgot how poorly run the Islanders franchise is.

Nabokov claimed by NYI, refuses to report, suspended

Well that sucks. So Philly could claim him even though they have a better record than us? Sorry but that's just stupid. The time has nothing to do with it. They don't reveal if there were any claims until noon. Several teams may have already claimed him. All that we have learned is that New Jersey and the Islanders have publicly said that they would not make a claim. So it is a stretch. Anybody else want to join me?

Ok. I will stick my neck out. I think that he is ours. If I'm wrong, I will eat crow.....

Philly has a better record than us so they are out - we would get to claim him before them. The Islanders are not going to make the playoffs (they are 17 points out of 8th) so that doesn't make sense. Why claim him for what is less than half a season when he is going to become a free agent at the end of the season. It would be better to give one of your young goalies some experience. As far as San Jose, that would be just awkward. They let him go because they didn't want to pay him now they want him back because he's cheap. I would think that Nabby would be a little bit bitter about that but who knows.

Here's the thing. Nabby's agent has let it be known that he is not interested in being a backup. If I were a team claiming him with the intent to use him as a back-up I wouldn't do it. The last thing a team wants is an unhappy back-up goaltender. That narrows the number of teams SIGNIFICANTLY. So who is left that is looking for a STARTING goalie? My guess is that Kenny told him that he would have the chance to compete for the top spot. Any other team that is really interested would have to offer him the same opportunity. The other thing is all most all teams already have 2 goalies so they would have to send one down to the minors (if they could without the waiver problem). Let's consider the situation in Chicago as an example. Say they claim Nabby. Now what happens to Crawford? Turco isn't going anywhere. Somebody has to be the odd man out. San Jose might have a chance with Nitty injured but I can't believe that Nabby would be happy in San Jose after they cut him loose once. IMO 3 things have to be right for a team to claim Nabby: 1) He must be given a chance to compete for the top job which means that the top guy is currently struggling 2) The team must have a way to dump one of their current goalies without losing him to waivers. 3) The team must have a chance to make the playoffs or it doesn't make sense to bring in Nabby for the end of a non-playoff season. Detroit fits the bill with Ozzie out and Jimmy struggling. If Ozzie comes back 2-3 weeks before the season ends, they could carry 3 goalies for the short time period or he could be persuaded to not come back. We will see........ Who else fits the bill?

My guess is that Holland told him that if he outplays Jimmy he will be the starter. No guarantees, if Nabby wants to be the starter, the opportunity is there but it's up to Nabby. That is what I would have told him.

I have faith that Jimmy will eventually be good in the playoffs but he was not great last year. He was 5-7 with a .915 save % and 2.75 GAA. Those are not "great" numbers.

Jimmy Howard will be back in net Thursday

Actually, he has a GAA of 2.83 so he isn't letting in 3 or 4 goals every single night but don't let the facts get in the way of a good story...

1/15 GDT: Blue Jackets 5 at Red Wings 6 (OT)

In the last 10 games the Wings are 6-2-2 which translates into 14 points in 10 games for a 0.700 point percentage. This is even with all the injuries. Remarkable. I'm thinking that there are fans of other teams looking at this and are not happy. 0.700 WITH the injuries....

Really? Who are all these young guys that are going to turn over the puck. The only guys that aren't regulars are Tatar and Mursak. Mursak will be in his 10th straight game and has looked pretty solid. Kindl is normally our 7th D-man and has played in 16. It's not like we have a bus load of GR players coming in. I think the Wings will grind out a win. After all they are playing the Columbus Blue Jackets. As long as Joey plays well, we will get the 2 points and most likely Jimmy will be back in on Tuesday.
