    Filppula signs 5-Year, $15M contract

I don't agree. But more importantly, neither does Ken Holland, Jim Nill, Mike Babcock, Scotty Boman, Steve Yzerman, Mike Babcock or Haakam Anderson. Maybe mayself and all these great hockey minds are wrong and you are right........naaaaaahhhhhhhh

    Filppula signs 5-Year, $15M contract

How many Selke nominations does he have? How many Selke trophys does he have? How many Stanley Cup Rings does he have? How many Conn Smyths has he won? And let's see, he's about the same age and has played on pretty good Ottawa teams most of his career. He's NOT as good defensively as either Pav or Z and that is what wins Cups.

    Filppula signs 5-Year, $15M contract

That has nothing to do with anything. It's a matter of the conditions when the contracts were signed. There are LOTS of forwards in the league that make alot more than Henrik Zetterburg but not many of them are anywhere as talented. Also Cleary was a no-show in the playoffs this year. Fil had a great playoff....

    Filppula signs 5-Year, $15M contract

If mule plays like he did in March, April and May for the rest of this year, he is worth a hell of alot more than 3-3.5 mil. I think he's more like 4-5 mil.

    Filppula signs 5-Year, $15M contract

All signings are risky. Signing Hossa for 7.4mil is risky. What if he gets hurt? The question is how much risk are you willing to take. Kenny thinks that 5 years from now, Flip will be worth more than $3 mil a year. I think damn near everybody would say that that's a good bet. I think that Flip took a discount to stay with the Wings for 5 years. I am surprised that he agreed to play for only $3 mil a year for the next 5 years regardless of how much he improves. The only way this is a bad deal for the Wings is if he doesn't improve.

    Why wait until September?

The Sharks are big, young and mostly Canadian; therefore the Hockey media love them. Because of this they are overrated every year. Just like the Anaheim goons. A similar thing happens with the Pens because of Crosby and the opposite happens with our Wings. Unfortunately, alot of sports writers have problems being objective. Look at the Wings-Pens series. Their were people that picked the Pens. Based on what? Youth? In the SCF? Really....We know how that turned out....The terrific Pens offense scored 10 goals in 6 games total....

    Why wait until September?

No doubt - they overpaid for both Campbell and Huet. And what do they do with Khabibulin? $12.3 Mil wrapped up in goaltenders!

    Why wait until September?

Nobokov is one of the top 5 goalies in the league. The problem with him though is that he hasn't faired so well in the playoffs. Some of that comes from the idiot Wilson playing him 79 games a year until he is worn out. It will be interesting to see how the Sharkies do with Todd behind the bench. I don't see them getting past round 2 though - not with a rookie head coach and the players that they lost over the summer.

    Re-sign or resign?

You got it backwards. re-sign means to sign again; resign means to quit. You can't resign for 1 year unless you come back out of retirement

    Re-sign or resign?

So you think that all of them will re-sign? That's not likely. Homer has had injury issues so I would expect him to be done when his contract is up. Maltby's game has slipped to the point where we don't need him so I expect him to be encouraged to retire. Drapes also has lost a step so I doubt that he will be offered another contract. Lids just won another Norris and shows no sign of dropping off so I would expect hime to be offered another contract. What he does will be entirely up to him. Ozzie will probably go a couple more years because he is still effective and has been fairly healthy. Of course this is all just my opinion and it depends on what happens in the next couple of years but the deciding factors are always health and effectiveness. Malts and Drapes are losing their effectiveness and Homer has had injury problems.

More proof that Ovechkin is basically awesome

Crosby is Canadian, Ovechkin is not. All those Canadian sportswriters are not going to name a Russian as "the face of the NHL" Given a choice, I'd rather have Alex than Sydney, he's a lot "tougher".

What are you looking forward to...

All time great Redwings, maybe. All time great NHL Goltenders...ah...I think that's a bit of a stretch

What are you looking forward to...

I'm thinking that Rex is going to get blasted on LGR. IMO the lines will be: Z, Hossa, Homer Pavs, Flip, Mule Cleary, Sammy, Rex Malts, Drapes, Kopecky/Downey/Mac No way Rex is going to be productive on a line with Cleary and Sammy so I think that the LGR Braintrust will start clamouring for him to be traded. He just isn't going to crack the 2nd line and that means limited ice time. Combine that with the fact that we will probably have to shed some salary and he's going to get lots of grief from the board.

    Way to manipulate the cap

The cap this year is about $57 mil. Let's assume that it goes up 6-7mil next year like it did this year. That means it will be around $63 mil next year. Currently we have $38.2 mil on the books for next year. Add 2.5 for Flip and assume that Mac and Downey sign two way deals that won't count. That makes $63 - 38.2 - 2.5 = 22.3 left. We have to sign Z, Hossa, Mule, Kopecky, Conklin, Sammy, and Rex (Rex is a RFA). Let's say that we give Z and Hossa, $8 mil each and Mule $3.5 mil. That leave $2.8 for 4 guys all of which are expendable - Kopecky, Conklin, Sammy and Rex. It really comes down to who of these guys we want to keep. Sammy would get about 1.5, Rex about 1.3, Conklin about 1.0, and Kopecky about 0.75. Total 4.55. I think that if Hossa is a good fit, he is going to be a Wing for a long time.....

    What's going on with Val?

Why? It's not your money. Flip isn't stupid, he knows that his value could increase greatly over the next 3 years so he isn't going to settle for 2 mil for 3 years. If he settles for only 2 mil it is going to be 1 or 2 years at most. I don't get why so many people on here want to low ball him. The kid has great potential and we need to lock him up. If we only sign him for a year or two and he blossoms just like he is expected to, we will have to fork over big money when the contract expires. It's alot like what happened with Kronwall. We paid him based on potential. Now we have a 4-5 mil defenseman that we locked up for 3.5 mil. I'm glad that Kenny is smarter than the LGR posters. This isn't ABC warehouse and you aren't shopping for a HD TV.

Will Lidstrom win Norris trophy again?

The Norris Trophy is Nick's until somebody takes it from him or he gives it away. To take it from him, they will have to have an increadible season. For him to give it away, he will have to have a bad season. The 2nd option isn't likely since he rarely has a bad game let alone a season and he is almost never injured (knock on wood). So who is capable of having a great season? I don't think any of the young guns are there yet. Maybe Nieds or dickhead

Therrien gets a 3 year deal

This is a guy that refused to put his best player on the ice during the PK because he felt he wasn't ready. Even after being outscored 7-0 in the first 2 games, Sydney was sitting while the Wings were on the PP. He also sat Gary Roberts for the 1st 2 games even though Roberts exhibited the veteran leadership that the team was desperate for. Stupid. Just plain stupid. Poor decision making. Who would want to play for a coach like that? Obviously not Hossa, Malone, Roberts, Laroque, or Conklin. They may or may not like him but he's not a good coach.

If we lose in the Finals, is '08-'09 season a failure?

s*** it's still July! When the #$@^ does October start? I can't take much more of this. Drop the puck for Christ's sake.

If we lose in the Finals, is '08-'09 season a failure?

Lose in the finals? Pleeeease. To whom? What's left of Pittsburgh? Montreal? Ottawa? Washington? Not likely. It's much more likely that if we lose it would be to a Western Conference team like Dallas. San Jose has lots of talent but being that they have a first year coach I'm not too woried about them Dallas looks like our biggest challanger but Turco has to start being more consistant. Anaheim is just a one year wonder who found out last year that you can't win anything if you are 28th in the league in scoring no matter how many goons you have. Chicago could take a giant step... So on paper we look like the best but anything can happen. But lose to an Eastern team, not likely.

    2008-09 NHL Schedule Released

The new schedule format is: 6 against division rivals 4 against non-division conference teams 1 against other conference 3 "extra" games So you would think with these 3 extras, we'd have Toronto, Montreal and maybe Pittsburgh. But NO, we get Pittsburgh, Buffalo and ATLANTA! WTF? why would we want to play Atlanta twice instead of Toronto. @#$$@

    Update on Filppula/Chelios

You can't compare a 2nd year player to a Selke finalist in the prime of his career. Granted, I don't think that Fil is as talented as Dats but Dats had 35 points in his first year and 51 in his second. Fil had 17 and 36 respe4ctively. Put Fil on a line with Hank, Hossa or Dats and he is easily good for 30 goals IMO

    Update on Filppula/Chelios

I'm thinking z-Hossa-Homer Fil-Mule-Dats Fil and Dats played together for short periods last year an dit worked out great. Fils production went way up. These pairings are insane. I am pumped...
