Crosby's 2012 Season now in Question

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy... Oh, I mean, HOW TERRIBLE! In all seriousness, Crosby should never have played the next game vs Tampa if he had symptoms stemming from the Steckel hit on New Year's Day. Hedman hits him from behind, down again and this time for good. And what's absolutely crazy about all this, remember: The Pens' new rink at the Consol Energy Center was DESIGNED AND BUILT to have a capacity of 18,087. Wouldn't that suck if 87 never played another game at the rink with his number in the seating?

    San Jose Sharks

Out of Niemi's 60 GP, he's probably had some stretches of 20-25 in a row before getting some rest. Nabokov's numbers are telling though. 71, 62, and 77. That's Nuts. And yes, a 1 or 2 seed is important, but if that team is good enough and the goalie is rested, they shouldn't have a problem period, on the road or at home. Edit: Checked Wiki. Niemi started every game from 1/15-4/6. Nearly 3 straight MONTHS, and 34 GAMES. 34 GAMES IN A ROW OF NHL HOCKEY.

    San Jose Sharks

eh. he got banned. The Idea that SJ will be "fighting for a playoff spot" and can't turn any games over to an "ahl goalie" is dumb. The only thing SJ fights for toward the end of the season is the president's trophy. Why in the world would you start a goalie, say 40 of 55 games, you're at or near 80 pts, and are virtually assured a playoff spot, and then run him the rest of the 28 games at that point? I would seriously go 1, 2, 2, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 2 at that point. Unless the backup gets hot, in which case, run him. SJ has never utilized their backup, and it has hurt them badly. Also since my last post, I saw the lines another user posted. That's lookin pretty baretable below the top 6. If they thought running the top 6 vs Detroit last year was bad, they'll have to do that in the 1st round if they get an opponent like Chicago, Vancouver, Detroit, or even LA this year.

    San Jose Sharks

Please. Sharks won game 7 on the strength of 2 injured wings and 2 that got injured during the game. and also during games 6 and 7 the top 2 lines were run 22-25 minutes. The Sharks threw it all on the boat to beat the Wings and had nothing in the tank for the Nucks. They also haven't learned from running Nabokov into the ground. You can't run a goalie 70+ games and then expect excellent playoff performances, they do break down. They HAVE to work Niemi and Greiss as an actual tandem, something they've failed to do.

That would have been last year when the Vikings had to borrow Ford Field because the Rollerdome deflated. Before that.....when was the last time the Lions played outdoors at home?

Minnesota will finish last in the division. McScabb is washed up and done. The losses the bears took? Kreutz, yes, Olsen, by a reported account wanted out of chicago anyway (he doesn't block well) Rashied Davis, mainly a special teamer, and we have a number of those. Chester Taylor, still not known if we're resigning him or not, last word was we were letting him go (would compliment Best in Detroit just fine though). I am personally shaky about the idea that Roy Williams is going to be a #1 or #2 receiver for us. The same idiot who guaranteed a lions win over the bears in 2006, and turned out 34-7 Bears. Priority for the Lions is keeping Stafford upright. can't let him get injured. Offensive line for the Lions has been beaten before, need to solid up there. and I hate the Packers.

    Official Detroit Lions thread

eh. I am a Bears fan since i was raised in Illinois, but i like an underdog. Not to sound biased: Every time Stafford has played the Bears he's gotten injured. First year = Knee. Second year = shoulder. picking up 'shied Davis was good for you. Special teams dynamite and an ok WR. Aside from Tulloch, who's on the LB Corps? and the backfield would be dynamite if Vasher wakes up from his Superbowl loss coma and if Houston returns to the form he had in College at Arkansas. On the offensive side: No real standouts on the line, could be an issue. Stafford again to try and not get injured. Best to run the ball, but who's there to back him up? Plus, the offensive coordination in DET looks like a shambles some games. I'm certain the lions will finish ahead of the Vikings. Packers are tough, bears are tough. So much for the NFC North being the league doormat
  12. This is smokescreen from Spendthrift Tallon to make it look like FLA is doing something. 2 big ? 1. Line Chemistry. You can't just strap 3 forwards together and say go. doesn't work like that. 2. G.O.A.L.T.E.N.D.I.N.G. Theo = roller coaster and Clemmensen = Serviceable, never started.

    Kris Draper announces retirement

You know every time the Wings youtube channel interviews Draper and he talks about his kids, he smiles and brightens right up and starts going on about his kids. Even if the Wings just lost the finals, Kris would still brighten up when asked "Hows the wife and kids?" I think this'll be good for him to have more time with the family. We're gonna miss #33.

    The Real Osgood Question

If Ed Belfour made it to the hall of fame, Chris Osgood is in. #30 will no longer be worn by a member of the Detroit Red Wings. #5 will no longer be worn by a member of the Detroit Red Wings post-Lidstrom. Shanahan won't have his number retired here, because he played in too many places (HFD, NJ, NYR, DET, STL) McCarty won't have his number retired here because aside from flattening Fraude Ledouche in 1997 and scoring the 97 cup winner, what else has he really done? Went to Calgary, had problems, came back, retired.

Ok here is what I don't get

Let's see. Game 1. We hold a 1-0 lead until the last period and then lose in OT. I was in Troy at the Mariott watching during Penguicon, 1,407 Miles from here in Arkansas. Game 2. SJ gets goals on some lucky bounces to shooters and one bounce past Howard Game 3. We didn't come out well at all, skated and handled the puck poorly at home. Game 4. OK, we prolonged the series Game 5. We did what?!?!?! Game 6. Came back in the 3rd with 2-3 quick goals and SJ's top two lines generated nothing. Game 7. SJ Runs their top 2 lines most of the night, while Cleary and Bert go down with injuries. Keep in mind that during games 6 and 7, their top 6 played a ton of minutes, and that really showed in the Vancouver series in the WCF. Thornton, Heatley, Setoguchi, Marleau, Pavelski all played a lot of time, 3rd and especially 4th lines were nowhere to be found. And the biggest difference of all? The penalty calling was a lot more fair this year than last. Remember all the 5 on 3s from the 2010 series???

The question I present to you all, and it is tougher than it sounds: Will #30 be worn again on the back of the winged wheel?

    Bettman threatens Edmonton.

There needs to be a balance here: If there is to be a public/private relationship, then there has to be a 3rd party in charge of the arena. There also has to be a deal for anything as far as vendor %, parking rights, as well as what the arena management means to the greater good of the whole of Edmonton. Will it be used for more than just the oilers? absolutely. But let's not get carried away here, we have to determine where revenues go, and who can get paid back when. Keep in mind in the past there are several instances of a public funding an arena that ends up both paying for itself in gate revenue and new area sales/property/rent taxes, plus makes the area more desirable as having an entertainment venue that one doesn't have to travel to see. For instance, Tulsa Oklahoma in 2008 opened a brand new arena, the BOK Center after having it on the ballot as a publicly funded set of initiatives to beautify, clean up, and overhaul Tulsa and the downtown area. Thus far, it has generated a s*** ton of revenue, the area around it is starting to get renovated (see urban renewal/rebuilding) and businesses are coming in. Most importantly, Hotels are getting more bookings through what used to be slow season, resulting in better generated tax revenue for the city and county. It seats 17,096 for hockey on a 200x85 sheet, so perhaps if they don't work out in EDM.....Come on down to America's OIL COUNTRY.

Wings re-sign MacDonald to 2 year contract

Pascal Leclaire looks like swiss cheese IMO. His best years were in Columbus, and that was miles ago. Any idea about Mathieu Garon? Martin Gerber? Conks would be excellent, but who knows what's up with him.

We can hope can we not?

Value is subjective to speculation and inflation/time passing. Look at the ever-fluctuating prices of oil based on speculation, or land values, depending on area of country and economic status. a 3 story house in Michigan sells for less than a 3 story house here in Northwest Arkansas because the economy here is more robust. I do think the Blues are a couple tinkers away from making money. It would take a savvy business mind to do it, but Hulsizer made his money off the traded bank loans and other crap that caused the crisis in the first place, so while he can get away with it, he probably will. Look at Eugene Melnyk.
  22. Hiei

We can hope can we not?

Let's look at it like this: The Blues sold out all 19,150 seats at Scottrade Center 41 of 41 times last season. (ESPN) The Blues are 11.5 million under the cap thus far. (capgeek) The Blues are probably some postseason success away from frenzy-ing the populace in STL since the cardinals are standing to lose Pujols and inevitably slide, plus the rams are still sucking. The Blues probably aren't bleeding money. The team was bought, mostly, on a loan of $120 million (or 80% of the final sale price) which was written in 2006, prior to the housing bubble burst. Checketts and Co. probably are getting pressure from CitiGroup (bailout anyone?) to pay back. So Hulsizer pulls out of the deal with Phoenix because the details on that get sketchier by the minute. St Louis is a solid team with a fanbase established, and money ready to be printed. After all, Hulsizer wasn't planning on buying a team to move like Balsille or TNSE. It boils down to this: Get a stable owner who is willing to use some $. Get the tickets to a reasonable price level to sustain the team somewhat, because if they're bleeding 10-15 million a year (one post on that thread in the link) while still being that much under the cap, what are they selling tickets for? 50 cents?
