However, if you take a regular fan base (and by regular I mean, your average resident) in a city that actually cares about hockey (i.e., not Anaheim/Phoenix/Nashville), execute the same owner conduct and fan treatment over a period of years, I believe you'll find the same reaction whether it's Chicago, Montreal, or Detroit. It doesn't have any place to boo the guy's Blackhawk memorial, but Chicagoan fan tendencies aside, I could see this playing itself out in a number of cities. Not because everyone is as good or as bad as eachother (because's that's a sack), but I don't expect much out of your typical fan.

No offense Rob, but seriously, Chicago isn't alone in having any "naughty" fans. They are everywhere. And just for the record, WIrtzSucks.com has been around since 2000. It wasn't made to rip on a dead man: it was made to rip on a live man who was (and still is) running a team into the ground and pissing off Chicago fans. Also... tell me this: Let's say Ilitch were on the level of Ford here, had a decent hockey club, and then utterly skeletonized the Detroit Red Wings after years of respectability. Blacked out home games on television for years, THEN at the game that they give him a send-off speech, they start spewing lies about "how great" and "loyal" he was in terms of the franchise, instead of he, himself, in his personal life. Would that not get your goat? The higher road, obviously, would be to suck it up and give the man's spirit some respect anyway, but I do not blame Chicago Blackhawk fans much at alll.

I think Wirtz doesn't deserve that kind of response, but on the same hand: If that guy was at the mic talking about how much of a true fan the guy was, then really you're just calling those boos down on your own head. It's difficult to make out what the speaker is saying--if they didn't, they should have stuck to talking about Bill WIrtz the man though.

No doubt, that really is interesting too. It's definitely not the same here. Just look at Bobby's parents, they're so glad they had a second kid. ZING!

Yes. And this is why Hank's idea in another thread makes so much sense. If the teams had to bump and grind against eachother to get out of their division in the playoffs, there'd be actual and meaningful contact between them, and we'd get SOMETHING out of the goo that is the whole conference. It's that simple, if the league wants rivalries... give teams a reason to have them. And more importantly, the means.

I'm surprised they didn't escort the whistleblower out the door. It's funny, but I wonder why. If it weren't such a blowout I'm sure the Leafs forums would yield some answers--all they're talking about is how red their asses are after that spanking.

This thread hasn't picked up much traffic yet, but: I get what you're saying Hank, and agree. This subject doesn't really warrant much explanation--I mean, how does anyone not see it? The NHL is a borefest half the time. And it SHOULDN'T be--but ******* a, I can't recall the last regular season game that really got me excited watching the guys execute plays, star players show WHY they stand out, and everybody do their thing. How is that a problem? I think that's the point. And besides, the guys who will become elite players -will-: there is nothing stopping that kind of talent. It's the guys who could be high caliber but maybe won't that would take a hit. But no one's really talking fantasizing about that extreme a Talent Shaving, either. Just enough to return the league to being interesting. It still is... but it's not the same, you know?
