I would add the second goal as poor as well. He cant allow a rebound off his glove on a routine wrister from the blueline. If he wants to be an elite goaltender he needs make that catch 100% of the time. Remember when Howard beat the Rangers and played better than Mrazek did in the St Louis game? Its silly to think that with the way Howard has started the season he only deserves to start on the back end of back to backs. It needs to be a 60/40 split for Mrazek until he either proves he deserves the #1 spot or Howard continues to wrestle more games away. He can play well all game long but if he letting 3 or more goals squeek by, which has happened in 5 of his 8 starts, that is a problem. Goaltending hasnt been one of this top 5 issues but you cant honestly say that Mrazek hasnt been leaky with how the ones that go in are going in. They are saves he needs to make and had been making and if he doesnt soon it will be a true 1A - 1B rotation soon.

You are right he was great coming in the last three games last playoff. Until he flubbed a pass with 90 seconds left and got caught behind the net on the game/series winner. Thats the problem with his game right now. He can be great a lot and then completely throw away all his good work on one play. I dont think anyone is truly debating that Mrazek is not the future for the club but based on boths current play Howard early this year Howard deserves more games and thats a good thing for the club.

While I agree that Kronwall should have gone on it right away Im pretty sure they held off on Vanek because initially they said he was just day to day and then found out it was worse then first thought. Now they say an extra week so its still better to keep him off LTIR which allows him to get back sooner.

If Petrs confidence is destroyed because Howard is getting starts then Mrazek is not mentally strong enough to be a starter. He needs to see it as a challenge and raise his game. And let's be real. Mrazek is not an established starter. He was named the starter and is hopefully the goalie of the future but in no way has established himself as the starter. If he can lock the position as his own for 3 or 4 years of top notch play then he can be considered an established starter. Right now he's a guy with great potential but hasn't proven he can perform for an entire season. Guys like King Henrik are established starters because they've performed for years. Lets look at this from a different angle for those that want Mrazek playing 70+ games. He is the future of this team no doubt. This team needs Howard to get into games and play well though. They tried to trade him all off season and nobody bit. He has no trade value and there was no guarantee LV would take him. They need him to play in 25+ games and to play well. If he keeps playing like he is then come trade deadline someone will definitely be offering up for him and at the very least he probably gets taken in the expansion draft and the Wings get some cap relief. If they dont play him we will be in this same two goaltender boat next year so everyone needs to really push for him to play well and get in games.

The best thing this that can come out of the last 24 hours is hopefully it forces Hollands hand to give the kid a shot. Sheahan could go out for him and the team loses nothing.

Simple fact is Mrazek hasnt grabbed ahold and claimed the starter as his own and Howard has played strong enough to put his name back into consideration. Regardless of whos in net the other 18 guys in the lineup are not that good and are the real teams issues. Whos #1 and #2 doesn't change the real weakness of the team. I see what your saying HM and I agree with that philosophy but only when you have an establish go to starter. Mrazek has shown flashes of greatness but in two seasons has not shown he can be the heavy workload starter while keeping up a high standard of play. With that scenario you need a timeshare in net. Currently Mrazek is on pace to play in over 2/3rds of the season games. Thats perfectly fine for a young goalie trying to prove himself.

2 and 2/3rds games actually. And in that time hes played better than Mrazek.

Thats entirely possible. Lets be honest though. Mrazek has also had a propensity to let in soft goals on a fairly consistent manner himself. Sure he will make quite a few great saves in a game but those stinkers find a way into his game as they do Howard. Howard just has been doing it longer. He took the starter job last year and couldn't hold onto it. It was given to him again to start this year and so far after the first 10 games he has done nothing to lock it down where Howard has shown the game to take it back. Mrazek has yet to prove he can handle a full time NHL starters job. Thats why in my opinion not being able to move Howard last offseason was a blessing in disguise.

Is pretty good better than a GAA of .67 and a .980 save%? If Mrazeks numbers are pretty good then what are Howards? You say you are pretty sure they would have won and you might be right. Or they could have lost 3-0. Mrazek has been ok but he has been letting in weak goals (see Mike Ribeiro and the 4th goal today ) so you cant 100% say they would have.

Atleast the defense is clearing guys out of the crease. To bad t hat guy was the Howard lol.

Hes played 6 of 9 games. Hes getting played like a starter despite Howard leading the league in GAA and save %. This argument doesnt mean anything though as this teams problem is the team in front not the two goaltenders. Either one give the team a chance to win.

Mrazeks career numbers against Boston are horrible so going with Howard wasn't an issue. Especially since Howard played so well. Welcome to the new NHL where backups are going to get 20+ games. That is a good thing with how Mrazek has shown an inability to keep his level of play up for a full year. True Mrazek had a strong game against St Louis but Howard was even better his previous starts. Mrazek despite his strong play has had a real issue with rebounds so far. He needs to sort that out. Hes started 6 of 9 so his rhythm cant be that off.

Ive only read the last page or so of the thread. Is he getting the hate already after last night? I figured his first two starts would have bought him a week or two of being in good graces.

It was only 1-0 because Boston played almost as bad as Detroit. I can honestly say it was the least entertaining hockey game Ive watched in a long time. It was if both teams partied and drank all day and then took and hour nap before the game and then came out to play.
