sjradio 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2008 It's not just the fans. Name one other city in the country that has hosted: The World Series The Super Bowl The Stanley Cup Finals The NBA Finals (this alone narrows it down to Detroit, LA, and Miami.) The World Cup (eliminating Miami) The Ryder Cup The Final Four (coming in 2009) The PGA Championship The U.S. Open in golf The Frozen Four (coming in 2010 - eliminating LA) The MLB, NHL, and NBA All-Star Games An annual bowl game We have the Gold Cup for hydroplane racing An annual Grand Prix (which once upon a time was a Formula One race) The crown jewel would be an Olympics. Detroit has made the final bidding rounds more often than any other unsuccessful city and is considering a shot at the 2020 Olympics. The only city that can come close to claiming this stuff is LA, but the only professional football team in the city is the Trojans. If only Ladbrooke DRC was still open, because the harness racing would put us over the top. I really miss PASS Sports.
Aeothe Kaear 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2008 (edited) ah, i gotcha. they took the sonics for granted, and now that they're losing them everyone's sad. don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you got till its gone... Even now I don't think anyone gives a crap. I'm a graduate student, so I'm on the UW campus every day. There are 50,000 some college-agers around here, and you can't help but overhear dozens of conversations a day. I have never once heard one single word about the Sonics or pro basketball. Can probably count on one hand the number of times I've seen someone wearing a jersey/t-shirt. You don't see bumper stickers or ads anywhere. There is no buzz. Anything you read about people being upset about this is a vanishingly tiny but (apparently) vocal minority. Edited May 26, 2008 by Aeothe Kaear
FunkedUp 29 Report post Posted May 26, 2008 Boston is the only one that can come close. Fortunately, Detroit sportsfans aren't the obnoxious assholes that Boston fans are. I've lived in Boston now for 5 years and I completely agree. Prior to 2004 the Red Sox fan base was nothing compared to today. Everyone just loved to cheer for them in 2004 World Series because they felt sorry for them and they finally actually ended up winning after almost a century. The Red Sox nation crap is total B.S. You don't see Oakland or St. Louis running that crap, and they both have more titles. The Celtics fan base also was surprisingly non existent in Boston until this season. Last season bars wouldn't even play their games because of how awful they were. The same goes for the Bruins. I don't see any support for the Bruins anywhere. You wonder if hockey actually existed in this city. I went to the Wings and Bruins game this season at the Garden in Boston and half the people there were Red Wings fans. Their attendance figures are low as well. The Patriots cheat and are scumbags and when they don't cheat they end up loosing the Super Bowl. While I do like the Red Sox, Bruins, and Celtics I just can't get into them because of the obnoxious fans. Boston fans only like their teams when they're doing good, and they like their franchise more than the sport itself. Pathetic.
