REDHASEK 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 (edited) Brooks claims Sundin will choose between Wings, Rangers Posted by George James Malik July 01, 2008 08:35AM Paul from Kukla's Korner (a website you should bookmark, for today and otherwise) spotted this gem from the New York Post's Larry Brooks: July 1, New York Post: A year ago it was about hitting fixed targets Scott Gomez and Chris Drury. This year, the free agent market that opens at noon today, is all about moving parts. The Rangers want Mats Sundin and Jaromir Jagr. They want them on one-year over-35 contracts. Jagr, who arrived in New York last night on a flight from the Czech Republic, has yet to have a substantive conversation with GM Glen Sather regarding his future. It is believed that Sundin will ultimately choose between the Red Wings and Rangers, though he is not expected to make a commitment today. A meticulous man, Sundin essentially will decide whether he'd like to complete his career playing for hockey's Swedish-North American franchise in Detroit - and the NHL's model organization - or playing in America's most glamorous city. Sundin for weeks has been telling his friends in Sweden that he wants to live in New York. But the defending champion Red Wings clearly give the 37-year-old pivot his best chance to win the first Stanley Cup of what has been a distinguished 17-year career. Would Jagr be more amenable to returning on a one-year contract if Sundin stands to be his pivot? Would the Rangers be a more desirable destination for Sundin if he knows he will play with No. 68? Are they interlocking parts? If so, can Sather pull it off? Here's what I know about Brooks: during the lockout, he was probably the only person around not named Spector that understood that the whole thing was about tying salaries to a fixed percentage of revenues to increase franchise equity, which rises if banks believe that costs are "capped," even if a team is losing money in day-to-day operations (see: how the heck did the Preds sell for $193 million dollars?)... But Brooks' status as the New York equivalent of the Toronto Media (i.e. "Gee, everybody born, raised, or somehow remotely linked to the province of Ontario must want to become a Maple Leaf") in terms of his smug sureness that everybody wants to be a Ranger. Take this one with salt. http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2008/07/br..._will_choo.html Edited July 1, 2008 by REDHASEK
