St. Louis may swap Brewer for Souray

Although stocked with prospects, the Blues appear to be in the market for defensemen. That's somewhat surprising, considering how much they need scoring forwards. The plan, it appears, is to give Alex Pietrangelo and Ian Cole another year of seasoning with AHL Peoria. Cole finished last season there. Pietrangelo has played 17 games with the Blues.

Interesting rumor from Bob McKenzie of Canadian media outlet TSN: the Blues and Oilers might be talking about a deal to send Eric Brewer back to Edmonton for Sheldon Souray. The Blues have big-time space to take on salary and would do so with Souray, whose cap his is $5.4 million, compared to Brewer's $4.25 million. Look for the Oilers to take some salary back for this move to happen.

Both players have been busts in their current locations. Brewer is especially a sore point for the Blues, who got in with two spare parts that didn't out in the Chris Pronger trade. One way or another, Souray is done in Edmonton.

Too bad it likely won't happen. Our pal Jeremy Rutherford, beat man for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, tweets: "No truth whatsoever to Souray-Brewer rumor."

Meanwhile, Oilers GM Steve Tambellini told the Edmonton Journal he would not comment, other than to say he had nothing new to report on Souray.

The Blues also are in the rumor mill regarding Anton Volchenkov, Rutherford reports.

Speaking of the Blues, Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says they continue talking to defensemen Mike Weaver and Carlo Coloaiacovo. Both players can become unrestricted free agents, but neither appears close to a deal. Weaver is a low-cost, third-pair option; Coloaiacovo could fit in a second pair. ...

Flames GM Darryl Sutter cast off another player Wednesday, placing forward Nigel Dawes on waivers with the intention of buying out his contract if Dawes is not claimed. Dawes has a yet left on his contract. He had 14 goals and 18 assists in 66 games last season. ...

More players hit the street Wednesday via waivers. They include Avalanche defenseman Tom Preissing and forwards Andrew Peters and Jay Pandolfo from the Devils.

Pandolfo, long a Devils stalwart, asked to be bought out, Tom Gulitti of NorthJersey.com reports. Peters become redundant with the Wednesday re-signing of David Clarkson.

More later as developments continue.
