Refs called less penalties in third period last year

Interesting post here. Although the numbers show a drop in the third period, I compared the total number of penalties called by period, in a statistical program, and there is no significant drop, until you get to OT. That is probably because of the amount of time available.

It's not as simple as they make it out to be. Not all penalties are created equal. High sticking for example is not a judgement call. Neither is that stupid puck over the glass so the amount of times that those penalties are called have nothing to do with officiating. The same goes for too many men on the ice.

The penalties that are or can be influences by the refs are interfernce, roughing, boarding, slashing, hooking, etc.

These "judgement" penalties should be the ones in the article.

They do have it broken down by penalty in the link.

And FWIW, too many men is definitely a judgement call.

They are, and when you only count those, there is still no statistical difference.

Interesting how there's no statistical difference... but I remember watching and feeling as though they almost never called penalties in the 3rd. Oh well, it's not the amount of calls that bothered me as much as the amount of botched calls during the year. Any way the NHL releases a "yes our refs made mistakes during the season" stat sheet? :P
