added 12:45pm, BOSTON (June 7, 2011)— Vancouver Canucks defenseman Aaron Rome has been suspended for four games for delivering a late hit to Boston Bruins forward Nathan Horton in Game Three of the Stanley Cup Final, the National Hockey League announced today. “Two factors were considered in reaching this decision,” said NHL Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Mike Murphy. “The hit by Rome was clearly beyond what is acceptable in terms of how late it was delivered after Horton had released the puck and it caused a significant injury.” Rome was assessed a five-minute major penalty for interference and game misconduct at 5:07 of the first period. Rome will miss the remainder of the Stanley Cup Final series. In the event that the Final ends before Game 7, the suspension will carry over to the start of the 2011-12 regular season.

According to CapGeek.com, the Red Wings have $1.6 million in cap space. Mitchell made $3.5 million last year. “As we go here, it’s got to add up to $59.5 (million),” Red Wings GM Ken Holland told Sporting News. “Yeah, we’ve got decisions to make but we think they’re good decisions to make.”

Wings officials will announce later today Lidstrom has agreed to a one-year deal. The exact amount was unknown, but it is believed to be near $6 million. Lidstrom, at 40, remains one of the elite defensemen in the NHL. He played in all 82 games last season and was a plus-22. The Red Wings have reached the playoffs in each of the 18 seasons Lidstrom been in the league. Maltby will be placed on long-term injured serve, solving the club's salary-cap issues. This will enable defenseman Andreas Lilja to be activated. Lilja said he expects to be in the lineup Monday at Colorado, in the first game following the Olympic break. “It kind of stinks, not how you want to finish a year at any time but when you can’t do certain things and play the way you want to play on a consistent basis, it's something that had to be addressed, whether it was sooner or later,'' Maltby said. "I ended up playing with it all year, so obviously now that the club’s getting a lot healthier, it’s an easier decision to do it now.'' Maltby said he doesn’t know the exact time frame for his recover but is hoping it’s four-to-six weeks. He is hoping to return for the playoffs. "It’s basically going to come close to the end of the season, if not the end,'' Maltby said. "Hopefully, there’s no surprises when they go in, which I don’t expect there will be, and just take care of business, get it rehabbed as quick as possible and get back into game shape and hopefully be ready to help the team make a run in the playoffs.’’ Lilja said only some paperwork needs to be completed before he is cleared, but team doctors told him that, medically, he is good to go. Monday would be Lilja's first NHL game in one year and one day, since Feb. 28, 2009, when he sustained a concussion on a punch to the chin from Nashville's Shea Weber. "Got to be careful, still,'' he said. Said coach Mike Babcock: “I saw him yesterday, he was on the ice before us, he shot it in the top corner (with) a wrist shot from the far end and I thought, 'Geez, we could use him. I haven’t seen a whole lot of that going on this year.' '' Right wing Jason Williams (broken fibula on Nov. 7) skated in a warmup suit near the end of practice, the first time he's really tested his leg on the ice. "It's still a little ways from being able to play,'' Williams. "I'm just happy I could get out there and sort of tolerate everything a little bit more than the first time I went out.'' JAMES FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson can’t quite straighten out his left leg and can’t quite bend it, either, but given that he has no ligament damage to his knee, he is, more than anything, upbeat. “I feel pretty good,†he said today, the first time he spoke since suffering a deep bone bruise when he was hit by Phoenix’s Shane Doan in the first period of Monday’s 3-2 victory. Ericsson is out at least two weeks. “It could have been worse, a lot worse,†he said. “I felt my leg go in the other direction, so I felt something was wrong right away. I was just glad that it wasn’t worse. I was in here and they took a look at it right away, and the things that worried me the most, they were pretty stable right away. So that kind of got my hopes up a little bit more. Then the MRI showed there was nothing wrong with my ACL, so I’m happy.†The Wings won’t really have a firm grasp on when Ericsson might return until swelling subsides. Ericsson bears no grudge against Doan, saying, “It was a clean hit, it’s just he hit my leg first and just hit the inside of my knee. That was where the big impact was. I don’t feel it was a dirty hit at all.†Doan reached out through a Wings trainer to say he felt bad about causing injury, according to Ericsson. “I appreciate those kinds of things," he said. "Even though it wasn’t a dirty hit, he was still worried. Filppula, who is the closest of the injured Wings to returning to action, skated with the team during practice drills and attempted some wrist shots. Filppula has been out since Oct. 29 with a broken right wrist. “It was fun, a lot of fun,†Filppula said of skating with the rest of the team. “Been missing doing that.†“Now I can start practicing with the guys. I’m still a couple weeks away, probably, from playing, but I felt pretty good.†Kronwall and Franzen both were skating for the first time since they were injured. Kronwall has been out since Nov. 21 with a sprained left medial collateral ligament, and Franzen has been out since Oct. 8 with a torn left anterior cruciate ligament. Franzen joked that since everyone else was skating, he decided to lace up the skates, too. “I wasn’t hoping for a good workout or anything like that,†Franzen said. “Want to smell the ice and feel my stick and do all that.†Kronwall likely won’t return until the end of the month or early January. Franzen isn’t expected back until February or March. Helm remains day-to-day with a strained tendon in his left wrist.

Tests revealed a deep bone bruise on his left knee and in his calf muscle, but no structural damage. "What I've been told is that he'll be out a minimum of two weeks, but we will know a lot more in a week or so," general manager Ken Holland said. Ericsson was injured Monday on a check from Phoenix captain Shane Doan in the first period. Holland said the Wings will recall Doug Janik from Grand Rapids to replace Ericsson. "Janik has the ability to kill penalties, and Jonathan Ericsson was eating up a lot of minutes on our penalty-kill," Holland said. "We needed a guy with the same ability to eat up those minutes." Janik, who has played in one game with the Wings this season, had 15 points and a plus-10 rating in Grand Rapids. Darren Helm, who has a strained tendon in his wrist, will be evaluated again Wednesday. He could play Thursday against Tampa Bay.

If you want to stay downtown, a very nice hotel to stay at is the newly renovated Book Cadillac Hotel. They also have a great bar on the first floor called 24. It's within walking distance to The Joe (though quite a walk) - a cab might be your best bet. Greektown is a lot of fun and safe. We also have a few casinos (that all have nice hotels attached) that might be an option. There is also a good bar called 150, which is near Cobo Hall (which you can walk through to get to The Joe). It's located in the John Madden Office Building (which has a People Mover stop, as does Cobo/The Joe).

Shanahan leaves the game with 656 goals and 1,354 points in 1,524 games. He's 11th all-time in goals and 23rd in points. He's also the only player in NHL history with at least 600 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes. He won three Stanley Cups, an Olympic gold medal and played in eight NHL All-Star Games, but Shanahan's ultimate legacy will be how he helped lead the game coming out of the labor stoppage that forced the cancellation of the 2004-05 season. His "Shanahan Summit" brought together some of the best and brightest minds of the game from both sides of the player/management debate. A number of philosophical and rules changes came about, leading to the way the game is played today, from tighter enforcement of obstruction-type fouls to the trapezoid behind the goals. The second pick of the 1987 Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils, Shanahan also played for the St. Louis Blues, Hartford Whalers, Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers during his career. After four seasons with New Jersey, he signed with St. Louis following the 1990-91 season; as compensation, the Devils were awarded defenseman Scott Stevens. Shanahan twice scored 50 goals in four seasons with the Blues, and then was traded to Hartford following the 1994-95 season, in exchange for Chris Pronger. Shanahan spent just one full season with the Whalers, and then was dealt to the Red Wings just two games into the 1996-97 season. Shanahan's greatest on-ice success came during his nine seasons with the Red Wings. He played at least 75 games each season, scored at least 30 goals seven times and more than 40 goals three times. He also won his three Stanley Cups, in 1997, '98 and 2002. He signed with the Rangers prior to the start of the 2006-07 season, and spent two seasons on Broadway. Shanahan last played in the NHL last season, signing with Devils midway through the season and finishing with 6 goals and 14 points in 34 games. He re-signed with the Devils over the summer, but left the team during training camp when he and coach Jacques Lemaire couldn't come to an agreement on what Shanahan's role on the club would be.
