Another option for those clubs is Carolina Hurricanes netminder Martin Gerber, who recently told 'Canes management he intends to become an unrestricted free agent on Saturday.
Carolina GM Jim Rutherford didn't rule out a possible return of Gerber, but if the rumors of Red Wings management turning their focus toward the Swiss goalie are true he could end up in Motown next season.
Wings GM Ken Holland meanwhile hopes to re-sign Nicklas Lidstrom, winger Brendan Shanahan and backup goalie Chris Osgood by Friday, and should know by Saturday if captain Steve Yzerman will be back for another season.
If those four all re-sign soon, it'll make sense for Holland to sign Gerber, who'll be a cheaper alternative than San Jose's Evgeny Nabokov or Anaheim's Jean-Sebatastien Giguere. Gerber also played for Wings coach Mike Babcock in Anaheim and the latter could help sway Holland's decision should he vouch for Gerber.
I don't know about this. What do you guys think? He kind of crashed and burned in the playoffs.
