If Peter Forsberg got under Crosby's skin, what the hell is gonna happen when Pronger gets him?

I had this discussion with a buddy of mine at work today. We were talking about teams like Pittsburgh, Boston, and Tampa not being able to keep alot of their young talent because of the cap. This brought up the possibility of a soft cap. It's an interesting concept (It's been discussed before) and it seems like something that may possibly work. For those of you who may not no what a soft cap is, it is one utilized by the NBA. There is a set cap number, and unlike the NHL, it traditionally remains constant. However, teams are allowed to go over the cap when resigning their own free agents and draft picks. There are restrictions on teams over the cap however. Trades are restricted (not prohibited) and there is a veeeerrrrrryyyy limited allowance for outside free agents. However, this concept spares teams from seeing a well-developed core be torn apart. A system like this has its pros and cons. Like I stated earlier, it rewards teams who scout and draft well, and encourages teams to build a team within the organization (as opposed to throwing money at a bunch of free agents). Because they can go over the cap to resign players, a team wouldn't sacrifice one important player just because another emerged (Pittsburgh losing Ryan Malone in order to keep Malkin and Crosby). It also creates more stability for the players. At the start of the cap-era, most teams weren't offering more than 2-3 year deals. It made it hard for players to really settle down in one particular place and adapt to a system, not to mention the strain on the family because of this. However, this system has also caused concerns. Because teams can offer whatever they want to their own free agents, we often see extremely high contract offers. This destroys alot of depth in free-agent markets, because players know they can get more by staying than they can on the open market. As a result, it's very rare to see many A-list players hit the open market. Also, teams over the cap are very limited in what they can do player-movement wise. You can't make an offer to a free-agent that would put you over the cap, and all trades have to be equal contract value. This situation makes it very difficult for teams to rebuild. Interesting debate. I'm personally not hardcore for or against either one. Thoughts?

Am I the only one hoping someone offers him a 7-8 milion dollar deal? MAKE IT HAPPEN LOWE!!!!!!!!!

Panthers say Boston, Philadelphia, Montreal, and Calgary are in the hunt for Bouwmeester

These negotiations aren't going to be about what Hossa is worth. We all know he was easily worth the 7-8 million teams were offering him last year. These negotiations are simply going to be what is the minimum Hossa would be willing to take to play with the Red Wings. I don't like the concept, but welcome to the NHL in the Cap-Era

I hear Kenny is trying to persuade Jesus to rise from the dead and fill in that 6th d-man spot

Keep in mind also Helm's still only 22, FAAAAR from the prime of his career. Despite already being a big part of the team, he's still got alot of developing ahead of him, and he could very well develop a scoring touch. Remember back those last few seasons before the lockout when Draper was starting to put the puck in the net more frequently.

Ottawa Sun: Wings have made lucrative long term offer to Hossa
RedFX replied to 40#1Fan's topic in General
Okay, let's think about this for a second. You're willing to drop Kronwall (a proven defenseman who's been in the league 5 years, played in two cup finals, and for the past two seasons has finally been healthy) for Hedman (an 18 year old who's never played an NHL game, has proven nothing at the NHL level, and who may not even be ready to play consistently at the pro level). Really? -
Remember when this forum...... Wanted to waive Ozzie in order to try to get Josh Harding? Wanted to give away Filpulla, Kronwall, and others for Hossa in 2008? Wanted Kenny to do everything in his power to keep Todd Bertuzzi? Wanted to trade Datsyuk for RADOSLAV OLESZ????? Wanted to throw 3 million at Mark Bell? Thought picking Franzen in 2004 was too big of a risk? I trust my Wings to Ken Holland....You should too!

1. It would take ALOT more than dumping Hossa to get Heatley. 2. Hossa > Heatley 3. Hossa $ < Heatley $

From ESPN Here's a nice little tidbit... Either he was afraid of flunking.....or that was really, really, REALLY good sex

Dear Red Wings faithful, Kenny Holland has publicly stated the defense is set, and will not be altered for next season. Just fyi. Forever yours, RedFX

It could be Milbury though

Try to reunite the much feared Ellis-Langfeld-Hussey line of 2007

Kenny and Babs have confidence in him. That's enough to convince me.

I'm glad you have passion for you're team. But dude, everyone on here also has passion for their team. They love the Wings just as you do. All they're doing is talking hockey...there's no need to attack someone just because their opinion is different. And dude, I think you take this a bit too seriously. Beating a guy within an inch of his life because he's talking trash? Who are you, McSorley? C'mon man, take a chill pill. Look, I live in Nashville. Some of my best friends, including my fiance, are die hard Preds fans. When the game is on here, we talk trash, we taunt each other, we get in each others faces when our respective team scores. But when the game is over, we're still friends. The result of the game isn't going to keep us from grabbing a beer or hanging out the next day. Because In the end, it's just a game. No matter what the result is, there's a life outside hockey. The players have a saying: Leave it all on the ice. Don't let your emotions from the game spill over and ruin your normal life.

These guys really haven't been mentioned...Everyone is talking about someone like Neil or Laperrierre...But I always thought they would be great fits in a system like Detroit. They're all hard-working, high-energy guys that are strong on both ends of the ice. They basically play the same role as a Neil or Lappy, but for alot less money.

Is it just me, or are there some severe internal problems going on in Ottawa? I always hear about stuff going on in practice between players or players and coaches. I remember even back during their Finals run where everyone was talking about stuff like that going on. Maybe a factor in Heatley wanting out? Could also explain why Redden turned them down last summer.
