Well...if the cap is at 63.4 next season, they have 18 players signed to contracts with 4.4mil in cap space. Minus the 5.5mil gives you -1mil to sign at least two forwards and offer qualifying offers to 3 of their RFAs... So bye bye to at least one of Carter/Coburn/ Carle.

Actually, that's not true. He started the NHL season overseas (even if his contract had run out). If you start the season overseas, then you must clear through waivers to play in the NHL for that same season.

You think it's a big deal and that this ordeal was unfair, I don't think it was a big deal because Lidas and Datsyuk were going to miss at least one game after the ASG due to their injuries and they were paid for their "suspension" anyways. I know I am one of the few, but Eaves is very replaceable. He finished the regular with 3 points in the final 23 games. He did have 3 points in the playoff, which was nice, but he is a guy who is replaceable, as is Miller. I'd love to re-sign Eaves, but not more than 950K a season. Hell, Miller had 2 less points, but is an excellent PK'er, while Eaves was a very good Pk'er. Either one would be fine for me, but I'd rather have Emmerton and just one of Miller/Eaves.

Incorrect. The rule is you have to participate in the All Star Games. That includes a bevy of things. There is the game, the skills comp, media functions, etc. The Red Wings were aware of the stakes, aware that the players could simply show up to Montreal to avoid suspension, and chose to ignore all of it rather than have Ken Holland make an uncomfortable phone call to Niklas Lidstrom, who had "plans." It turns out the NHL didn't try and bamboozle the Red Wings with some eleventh-hour threat. Ken Holland was aware of the stakes last February and three days before the skills competition. My apologizes, I thought he did. I know King Henrik missed a game prior and that's why he never had to show up. And for the third or fourth time, the rule created a year earlier stated if you are named to the ASG and cannot attend (unless you missed at least one game prior to the ASBreak), you must attend the ASG festivities. Call or no call, smoke signal or no smoke signal, the players knew the rules.
