I never believe this kind of banter until it becomes a contract with dry ink. This was a comment to a rival city's reporter, at the beginning of what is looking to be a hard fought series, hes not going to say 'well the waters aren't clear, the details aren't set in stone'. His job as a representative of the Wings is to talk from a place of complete confidence. Its like if they asked him if it were game four and the Wings were down 0-3 if he thought the team was done. One would expect his answer to be "There is 0 chance the team loses, this team will take it one game at a time and try to force it to a game 7, where anything can happen'.
-
Bump, he is in GR right now, for the playoffs and in 7 games he has 3 goals and 2 assists. Really good for his first time playing the NA game.
-
This series may come down to the coaching, matchups, willingness to change on the fly, etc. I don't see this being a battle of goalies, or defenses, and I wouldn't be surprised if one game there are 10 goals scored between the two teams.
-
C isn't that bad, he has his role and hes playing it adequately. Hes getting points, they are flukey, but hes getting them so I won't complain, but to say hes above a C is a very homerish assessment.
-
Abdelkader B-, His production on a line that had was averaging a ppg still shows hes a plug, he made some dangerous plays that had he not been with Z and D would have burned the team, but, he was still effective enough. Cleary: D+ Worthless 90% of the time Brunner: B+ For a rookie, adjusting to the NA system, playing the most games of any season in his career, and playing on a 3rd line, he was great. A couple defensive problems keeps him from an A in my mind. Other than that I agree.
-
Still, he put up a 41 goal/95 point performance this season. Hes not paid to play defense, hes there to put the biscuit in the basket.

GDT WCQF Game 5 GDT: Red Wings 2 @ Ducks 3 (OT) - (ANA leads series 3-2)
Shaman replied to a topic in General
Well, I won't disagree that games ebb and flow, but the problem is the Wings (reference game 4) have games where they have a high degree of intensity the whole game. On the other hand, they have games where there are stretches where you have to ask if they even care (reference parts of game 5). A 60 minute game isn't about dominating every moment, but about at least matching the intensity of the opponent. The Wings have the talent, but they just don't seem to have the heart some games. -

If Detroit plays like they did tonight its over, they need to come out in game 6 and play 60 mins or it is over. -

^^^ Abdelkader made a stupid play, like hes done multiple times in the playoffs, and gave the NHL exactly what it wanted for making an easy example for their headshot rule. Everyone here may hate it, but, Abdelkader still made a jackass play trying to do something huge, and hurt the team by doing so.

I have played, I played from 5 till I enlisted at 17, stopped playing and could never pick it back up because of a broken shoulder I suffered in the service. So yes I played. That being said, I can look at a guy and determine if I hit him X way the head could be involved but if I hit him in Y way the head is less likely to be involved. Had Abdelkader tried not to make a HUGE highlight reel hit, and squared his shoulder better his head would have never been involved. The other issue I have is Abdelkader is famous for his s***, trying to make a hit, and it becoming a penalty that wins the game for the other team, look at the two times the Wings got bounced by the Sharks, both times, Abdelkader was in the box in crucial games and the Wings lost because of it.
-
My issue is this: In recent years in all sports the head seems to have become fair game, there have been a lot studies that show such hits can cause permanent damage, even if there is little or no symptom presentation at the time of the injury. The head MUST be made off-limits, and even accidental contact should be punished to keep borderline plays out of the game. A player should do the mental calculus before a hit to make sure there is no way they hit the head, and Abdelkader could have gone an inch lower to make sure his hit was perfectly shoulder to shoulder. He didn't, he sacrificed safety trying to make a big play, even though its clear it wasn't his intent to hit the head. And that's the exact issue I have, if it comes between making a huge play and jeopardizing someone else, everyone should be trained from a young age to let up and adjust point of contact. He didn't and the Wings are suffering now because of it. PS if you look at most head shot threads on this forum I say the same thing as I am now, I will not be a hypocrite because its a Wings player involved.

Per NHL.com 2011 on Rule 48 clarification:
-
There's no contact at that point, you take it a frame further and you have my image, shoulder to chin, contact, and his feet starting to leave the ice.
-
The offending foot is obstructed and you know it. I showed the RIGHT foot leaving the ice has he was jumping off his LEFT foot into Lydman. PS thats one foot, not 2 feet that you are pointing two. Also, thats about 2-3 frames before the hit was initiated, go forward to when the hit starts and Abs is jumping.
-
I agree there isn't any intent to hit him in the head, the issue is that a hit to the head suspension doesn't need intent for a suspension to be given.
-
Its not several frames after, point of contact in that play was at 57 seconds, check the video, at 56 there is still separation. And he is in the act of leaving his feet, that is not induced by the contact of the hit, but Abs doing it on his own. Show me any shot from that replay that doesn't show: the point of contact as shoulder to chin, and that Abdelkader's leaving his feet did not start within microseconds of initial contact, and is a result of his contact, not of his own intention.
-
ANY MANNER. At point of contact Abdelkader was leaving his feet, which would be him in a manner jumping into the hit, IE a charge.
-
I took a screenshot at 57 seconds at what is the point of contact of the hit: Two things are clear, #1 he is leaving his feet at the time of contact, not because of the contact, and #2 that initial contact is not shoulder to shoulder, or elbow to shoulder, but shoulder to head.
-
Actually its not, if its decided that the person left their feet on their own, not as part of the momentum of the hit itself, its a charge. From all the angles I have seen it appears that Abdelkader left his feet on his own in order to make the hit harder, which has been called by the NHL a charge in the past. Also, the angles I have seen show that the head was hit, if not first in isolation, it was still hit first along with Lydman's shoulder. The point is, had Abdelkader STAYED on his feet and not left them, this would have been a 100% legal hit, shoulder to shoulder, and there would have been no 5 mins penalty, and no discussion of suspension, but, this is par for the course for Abdelkader, he takes stupid penalties in the playoffs. As for Kronwall, I thought he was ejected in 2009 for a high hit.
-
Then you're blind. He clearly hits the head first in all angles, and even if he leaves his feet after initial contact, you're still not allowed to leave your feet on purpose to make a hit worse. By the way his body was during that hit, it appears that he left his feet in a controlled manor. The only way you don't see it for what it is is if you're a homer. And I am 100% if this were Perry on Datsyuk, you'd be crying for blood. And the point remains, if Abdelkader kept himself on his feet, and his shoulder down, this would have been a big CLEAN hit, no penalty, no misconduct, no possible suspension. Just another case of Abdelkader being an idiot and making the worst possible play and costing the Wings a playoff game, just like 2009, 2010, and 2011.
-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpBIFsbcy6Q This video shows the reverse angle at around 57 seconds. It shows principal point of contact was the head.
-
This is par for the course for Abdelkader, he is infamous for taking boneheaded penalties that cost the Red Wings games and series.

GDT WCQF Game 3 GDT - Ducks 4 @ Red Wings 0 (ANA leads series 2-1)
Shaman replied to FlashyG's topic in General
#1 principal point of contact was the head, he got body too, but shoulder first went into the head. Rule 48 #2 He left his feet on the hit, that's also against the rules, and according to rule 42 that makes it a charge So this is just another case of Abdelkader being a bonehead, and making a stupid play in the playoffs that costs the Wings a game. -
Because big hits are worth permanently injuring someone in a way that has been statistically shown to shorten athletes lives. I love seeing big hits Jolly, but come on, any hits, on purpose or accident to the head should NOT be part of ANY sport. While I would argue that the hit by Abby wasn't dirty insofar as there was 0 intent to go after the head, there was still head contact. Even RUGBY a game that you are ENCOURAGED to clock people, if you hit someone in the HEAD you are punished. Point of contact was Lydman's head, he left his feet to make the hit. This wasn't a clean hit.
