trade hossa for a bag of pucks!!!

yeah, it's probably the same thing as in many different sports. any little thing you can do that is within the rules but helps out your team somewhat, it's likely that a lot of people are going to do it, even if it is kind of cheap. i haven't noticed this myself, but it doesn't surprise me at all.

a franzen hat trick would be a nice birthday present, as would a victory over the pens. 4-1 (franzen x3, flipper) (satan)

i have to agree with this. i love flipper. i think he could be a second line scorer on some other teams. if they put flipper with their best two second line guys, he'd probably produce more than with our third line guys...but yet, is anyone on the second line worse than him? that is to say, if we put flipper on the second line, would he produce more than any of the guys on that line now? it's hard to say, especially because it all depends on what kind of guys you're playing with, IMO. to me, flipper isn't going to do that great with a guy like sammy, but he could do great with a guy like datsyuk. that's just my feeling. that being said, if some other team does see that value in him and we don't have room to put him on our second line, i personally would be really sad to see him go (i love the dude) but would probably admit that it was the best decision for the team. but, to the topic of the thread, good to hear about the z talks. i'm sure whatever comes out will be, if not our ideal, something that's at least workable. it's interesting to me that as big of red wings fans as we are, our "ideal" is never our players actually getting a high salary. granted, that's because we are team fans over individual fans, but it's just somehow ironic to me that we are always hoping for our favorite players in the world to get paid less. again, i understand why that is, i just think it's interesting.

dude, why the JK hate? he knows he's a goofball. he doesn't pose as a "legitimate journalist" in the pure sense. very few sports reporters do. he's supposed to be cornily funny (which he is) and he's supposed to ask players obvious questions (e.g. what do you need to do better in the third period) with obvious answers (e.g. score more goals than the other team) to give TV viewers a chance to gaze upon the faces of their beloved wings. it's not like he's out there claiming to investigate the dark underbelly of hockey gambling or steroid use or something. if you don't like him, that's fine, but i just think that you should frame your view of him in terms of what he is trying to be, and what he is supposed to be according to FSDetroit and the fans that pay their salaries by viewing commercials.

i still believe the sharks are a good team, but they just lost to the 'yotes, 4-2. so, no, they are not invincible. and i agree with the above poster (a post or two). yes, we're 0-1 against the sharks this year. but it was a west coast away game having played the night before in a very physical contest with the ducks. sure, that's not an excuse for losing, but i think even sharks fans would admit that they had the favorable position. put a tired sharks team in the joe (if somehow we could make them play at midnight with us still playing at eight, then maybe things would be even). i'm not saying we easily win that game, but if our guys are on, i say we do. the real question becomes who will stick it out through what would probably be a seven game series. i still think we got heart, even if it hasn't shown through in all games thus far. hossa is ******* sick, and dats and z aren't getting any worse, even if it's not showing up on the stat sheet. z played a very very good game in jersey. yeah, he didn't score a million points, but he was taking guys 1 on 4 and making them look silly. ozzie (i hope) is finding his groove. and flipper, my countryman, can still fly.

o.O = yeah, if messier didn't have that awkward "i just pulled a prank on a 12 year old" look on his face, it might be a different story. that being said, i don't hate it. p.s. does it look to anyone else like kronwall has a different helmet this year? or is it just that he cut his hair and it's not hanging out the back of his helmet, so it makes his whole head look different...?
-
they also have a lot of other components. they've pushed us around quite a bit in recent years. not to say that we've lost every game to them, but our wins are not usually easy. they're going to be a real good team--we have the potential to be even better (albeit quite different) in my opinion, but i believe our levels of potential are roughly the same, it's just a matter of who's going to work harder.

at this point it seems like the wings are more likely to win a game 14-3 than the lions are to win a game of any score... this should be a good one. weeks, while not marty, isn't bad. the devil's d always seems to do well. i'd probably expect us to win a low scoring game and lose a high scoring one. also, for me, the big question is whether the wings will be rested or rusty. hopefully the rest and the practices will tighten up the d and put a jump in their step. hopefully they're hungry to play some hockey. wings 3 (hossa, cleary, homer) devils 2 (parise, elias)

you never know what random threads are going to get a bunch of responses having nothing to do with the topic. (for what it's worth, i agree that in general 100k per point isn't outrageous in general terms, at least not outrageous enough that would could put a face after it.) but yeah, it will be surprising to me if shanny doesn't find a home sooner or later. i mean, yeah, he's not great any more, but he's still a 20-goal scorer. if he'll sign for cheap i can't see how he wouldn't help a struggling team. + leadership i assume would play some factor.

i think we've discussed this on here before, but what happens if, say, a team scores twice on a major penalty and that's there only power play of the game? 200% power play? heh.

boucher is 2-0 with a couple of road shutouts this year...obviously over the long-haul he's not as good as nabakov, but it's not as we're talking about a massive downgrade here...he's been off and on throughout his career but has been excellent in limited playing time over the last couple of years.

i agree with OP's general sentiment on the commercial...but at the same time, i don't mind not having the commercial about the wings, even if they did win the cup. it is a little insulting that the clips are all against us when we beat them in six games. it is also funny that the whole "cup changes everything" line is really untrue...because it doesn't really change anything for anyone not a wing or a wings fan (or someone who sells wings merch, i suppose). it seems like winning the cup would at least earn you a little attention in NHL promotional material. but, as others have said, we have the cup, so screw 'em.

wait, is this based on a source or just a joke? honestly, in some ways it wouldn't surprise me if burke did trade kunitz and marchant to clear cap space so he could get sundin...but you have got to be kidding me. it's only e3 that sundin met with the guy on the grassy knoll.
-
http://www.letsgowings.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=54012 it makes perfect sense though that everyone has something to prove when they play the wings. if you can beat us, you can run with the big boys. when the jackets gear up for a game against the preds...obviously both teams want to win, but is not nearly as important symbolically. *shrug* we'll be alright.
-
i'm not going to say whether ott has an obligation to fight or not after his hits (clean or otherwise), but it was still hilarious to see him running away from the fights. in the clip, i think it was the second time someone tried to fight him, he looked like he was being chased by a rabid animal or something. hilarious. go bruins.

Weary Wings Finally Can't Rally didn't see this posted on the first couple of pages...i thought it was a good read. (and the guy's not a wing-hater, so of course i think it's a good read )

i'm not normally one to criticize the creation of a thread...but really? there are about a zillion of these right now. i think most people here feel that some of our younger guys would be better than some of the guys that are playing on our team right now. that being said, i'd have to argue against worse pairing ever. yeah, they're looking pretty brutal right now, esp. lebda.
-
yeah, from getting f@@ked by the wings.

With less than five minutes left in the second period, Sidney Crosby caught a whiff of casserole from a local eatery. "It reminded me of..." I waited half an hour for the crying to stop. "...mommy," he finally finished. Per team policy, the Penguins are not disclosing what kind of casserole set Sid the Kid into this fetal nostalgia, and neither is Crosby. "All I can say is, God, the broccoli." Replays showed that he appeared to say more, but it was masked by the whimpering.

i'll have to agree with this. downey is the best we have. unfortunately, i just don't have confidence in him. i just can't imagine him going toe to toe with any serious fighter in this league. i agree that mccarty is not doing much at all, and what i'm about to say could be said of him as well, but what's the point of giving a roster spot to someone who can't play and is just going to give the other team momentum by losing a fight? still, that statement is more true of d-mac than it is of downey, which is why i agree that, while he isn't the answer, he is the best we have.

i agree, except for goal four. i would say that it was a "soft" goal; it was definitely a quick play with bad defensive coverage...but those are game-changing saves that elite goalies will make. i guess you can't necessarily blame ozzie for the goal (the d never should have let the puck get in that position) but i think a truly great goalie (which we can probably all agree that ozzie is not, nor has ever been, despite his elevated play in last year's cup run) would have had a shot at that. same probably goes for the 5-on-3s. yeah, not really osgood's fault, but again, your best defenseman on a 5-on-3 is your goalie. you are called upon to make a few spectacular saves to keep your team in the game when all else fails. ozzie did not do that. that being said, i'm certainly not going to hang him out to dry. there's a lot to improve on, and we're still at the top of the heap. we can't expect ozzie to be spectacular, so we need our defense to be, in my opinion. ozzie is playing right where he should be, or at least where we should expect him to, in my opinion. but even that save percentage would have a much better GAA if we were giving up our typical 15-20 shots a game rather than 30-35.

haven't they used "upper and lower body" for a long time? i didn't know they were required to name the specific injury in the past...
-
he has as many points and the same plus minus as selanne right now, and the ducks have played one more game than us. not saying that selanne is an elite player in the league any more, but people thought that his signing would make an impact on the ducks, and it may yet. it's still early in the season. we just passed the ten per cent mark of games played. when hossa, homer, dats and z go cold, that's when we need cleary (and val and jiri, etc.) to really step up their game. right now, we're winning games on the strength of our big guns plus a little help from their friends. as long as we're winning, we don't need clearly to be an impact player.
