I think I'm on to something here... Pav and Hank are our Ponch and Jon, our Bo and Luke, our Gage and Roy, our Kevin and Frankie, our Timmy and Lassie.... Sometimes one is the hero, sometimes the other one is, but at the end of the day, they're a team. They know each other inside and out and will go balls-to-the-wall for each other. Which one someone prefers is a matter of what they see that they like. Dekes, stickhandling, faceoffs, goals, assists, offense, defense, PP, PK... it's all part of the game, and each does his part. Some people are swayed by the beauty of a Datsukian deke. Others are swayed by killing a 5-on-3. Eurotwins. Something for everyone.

I know what you mean, and I agree with you, that playoff games require more than just good offense, but it sounded funny to me when I first read it. That's what Drake brought us last year in the playoffs. Grit, spirit, energy, and you knew if you crossed him, you'd be flat on your butt, or on your knees crying for mommy. You can't replace that with pure skill. Skill is important, of course, but you have to get it done defensively, and fight to get the puck. It comes down to all-around domination, not just in one area. Mac (to return to the topic) had it all, and a scoring touch to boot. We are in sore need of a player like he was.

The problem with basing an argument on the Conn Smythe, is that so many could have gotten it. Ozzie, Franzen, Dats, and Lids all have strong cases for them. Hank's name certainly belongs in the discussion. I'm just glad I didn't have to make the choice. My pro-Ozzie bias would have shown. If people use only that, and nothing else to "prove" that Hank is better, then their argument falls flat. I'm sure Ralph Macchio will agree when/if he shows up. Of course, Hank has much more going for him than just the Conn Smythe. Pavel has much more going for him than the Lady Byng. Evgeni Nabokov just said in an interview that he ranks Dats over Ovie, Crosby and Malkin. Pav is getting noticed, and he deserves it. It will be interesting to look back at the end of their (hopefully long) careers and compare.

Nope. Receipts from psychotherapists who have been treating former NHL players who cracked because they couldn't get the puck past him. Dom's being a gentleman and paying their costs. Seriously, though, if someone wants him, be it the NHL, KHL, AHL, PGA, NRA, WHO, or any three-letter acronym other than the KKK, it's his call to make. If not, he's still got his charity work and the Czech Hockey Hall to keep him busy. He also has a teaching degree if he wants to do that. Personally, I think if "retired" people want to remain active, and can do so in a way they enjoy, more power to them. Not to mention that it would be cool to see him in the Olympics. Whatever he chooses, he has nothing left to prove, and can do it all for the pure enjoyment of doing it. We should all be so lucky.
