We’ll see where it goes.†more

From MLIVE this morning: Fischer clarifies his role with Wings Posted by George James Malik November 14, 2007 23:01PM Former Detroit Red Wings defenceman Jiri Fischer clarified his role as a "director of player development" with the team: November 14, Windsor Star: Though his contract expired after last season, the Detroit Red Wings haven't abandoned Jiri Fischer. He remains a regular figure around the Joe Louis Arena and is often seen around the Detroit dressing room as he was following last week's game against Nashville. Despite the near-tragic end to his playing career, Fischer remains extremely upbeat and has taken on a new job this season as a scout for the Wings. "I'm going around and looking at our young prospects," said Fischer, who is still searching for some definitive answers to his ailment. "We'll see how that goes. I think I'll enjoy that and it keeps me involved in the game." Fischer still refuses to give up on playing again, but it no longer eats at him as it once did. Fischer told the Windsor Star's Dave Waddell that he's still grateful for every extra day he's lived since an episode of tachycardia stopped his heart on the Red Wings' bench. He doesn't remember much about the incident, which was followed by two more heart attacks at home shortly thereafter, but he does know one thing and it's a guiding principle of what he calls his second life. "I'm lucky just to be here to do anything," Fischer said. "Others who have been in the exact same circumstances haven't been as fortunate. There's a reason I was blessed with a second chance at life and I'm going to live my life to the fullest."

If I am reading the schedule correctly from the NHL website, Sunday's game is also only on the NHL channel (for those that can't get FSN). The following was also just posted on the NHL website: NHL Network continues to increase distribution NHL.com Nov 14, 2007, 10:25 AM EST Eighteen cable providers sign on to distribute NHL Network NEW YORK – NHL Network, the first national network dedicated entirely to hockey, has secured distribution through 18 more U.S. cable providers in addition to the seven largest distributors previously announced. Bermuda Cablevision; Blue Ridge Communications; Bresnan; Bright House Networks; CATV Service; Communication Construction Services; En-Touch Systems, Inc.; Grande Communications; Marco Island Cable; Massillon Cable TV, Inc.; MINET; Midcontinent; OpenBand Multimedia; RCN; Service Electric Cable TV; Service Electric Cablevision; Shrewsbury Electric and Cable Operations; and Zito Media are now distributing NHL Network. NHL Networknow will be accessible to 80 million homes based on all of the carriage arrangements, including those with Cablevision, Charter Communications, Comcast, Cox Communications, DIRECTV, DISH Network® and Time Warner Cable. NHL Network will broadcast 50 live regular-season games in the U.S. this season, all in HD, in addition to its daily live signature show – NHL on the Fly - - classic games, documentaries, instructional shows, highlights and more. http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2007/11/wh...ved_downey.html Why the Wings waived Downey Posted by George James Malik November 09, 2007 11:42AM As MLive.com's own Ansar Khan noted, the Red Wings may waive Aaron Downey on a monthly basis for the foreseeable future for a simple reason. As the Wings have a full 23-man roster, if a Red Wing sustains a minor injury, he'd need to be placed on the 7-day IR and miss at least one week's worth of games for the Wings to call someone up from Grand Rapids. Waiving Downey gives the Wings 30 days in which they can temporarily demote Downey and/or call a short-term injury replacement up from the Griffins sans IR complications: November 9, RedWIngsCorner: Forward Aaron Downey was put on waivers again to give the Red Wings roster flexibility. The same thing happened 30 days ago and Downey wasn't picked up by any other NHL team. With the team at the roster maximum of 23 and every player healthy, putting Downey on waivers and keeping him allows the Red Wings to make an immediate move if necessary without having to wait for someone to clear waivers. It's a pre-approval of sorts. Downey has until noon today to clear waivers or be claimed by another team.

http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/1082...hree-years.html The Nashville Predators won’t be packing their equipment bags for a move to Kansas City or anywhere else, at least not for the next three years. Multiple sources have confirmed to THN.com a deal has been reached between the city of Nashville and a prospective local ownership group to rework the team’s lease at the Sommet Center that will guarantee the Predators remain in Nashville until at least through the 2010-11 season. The deal has been reached between the city and the group led by Nashville businessman David Freeman. Although the tentative deal has not been approved by either the Metro Sports Authority or Metro Council in Nashville, it is expected it will be ratified by both bodies within the next 30 to 45 days. “From the draft of the deal that I saw, I didn’t see anything in there that would offend a council member or a citizen of Nashville,†said city councilor Charlie Tygard. But unlike the current lease that forces the Predators to remain in Nashville if they average 14,000 per game in paid attendance, the reworked lease will not have an attendance component to it and the team will essentially be free to leave the city after it expires in three to five years. Essentially, that means the team has at least another three seasons to turn its financial fortunes around and if it fails to do so in that time, the Predators will almost certainly be on the move. Freeman’s group, which has an agreement to purchase the franchise from Predators owner Craig Leipold for about $193 million, maintained it needed to change the arena lease to have a chance to make the Predators financially viable. It was asking for $4.2 million a year in sales tax and set fee revenue and $7 million in arena upgrades, most of which would go toward building a smaller concert venue that would seat between 3,000 and 4,000 people. The deal calls for the Predators to get about $3.2 million in sales tax revenues and will also get the concert venue, with revenues from the events going to the Predators. Tygard said one of the options would have been for the taxpayers to simply buy the remaining tickets to get the Predators up to the 14,000 paid level, but acknowledged there was no appetite from the city politicians to go that route. “That probably would have been the cheapest and easiest way to do it, but it was the least palatable to the political side because it looks like a corporate giveaway,†Tygard said. “That option was not even on the table.†Through six home games this season, the Predators have been averaging 14,428 per game, but only 12,305 of that is paid attendance. The organization is expecting that number to rise when some of the partial packages kick in later in the season, but the number is still well short of the team’s stated goal. There has also been a significant lack of corporate support for the team, something that will definitely have to change if the new ownership group has serious designs on a long-term future in Nashville. An NHL source said the deal will almost certainly be approved by the league’s board of governors as soon as it receives approval in Nashville. Nygard said he’s quite confident the deal will be accepted by both the city council and sports authority. “I think the administration and Metro Council have a sales job to do,†Nygard said. “But I think the administration has identified the economic benefits that would go away if the team left, namely sales tax revenues that are generated in and around the arena on game nights. I think they have to make it clear that the city would be worse off without the franchise and it had to make up the difference.â€Â

I believe the parking garage that ARICE89 is discussing is actually the garage attached to my building. The building has the financial district People Mover spot. I want to add that I believe that garage, along with the garage across the street, are not opened on Sundays. I also want to add that there is a great bar in the lobby - 150 Cafe. You can get in either from the Larned side or through the building lobby. $3.00 bottled beers for happy hour every night -- domestic and imported. Great appetizers and food and a quick walk to Cobo. I think it's a gem in the City that few people know about. Enjoy.

If they're really interested in paying the injury-prone winger $5 million for half a season's worth of work, they might want to put a skate orthotic-maker on a retainer: November 5, Globe and Mail: It looks as if the much-anticipated Peter Forsberg comeback has hit a bump in the road. According to two independent Swedish ice hockey sources, Forsberg left the first day of practice for Sweden's national team that will compete later this week in the Karjala Cup after about an hour, saying his problematic ankle wasn't holding up. The Karjala Cup is a four-team international tournament that was supposed to give Forsberg an indication of whether he could play hockey again at the highest level. Forsberg has been hedging about a possible return to the NHL, until he could test his chronically unstable ankles in competition. Apparently, he didn't pass his own personal test - "it doesn't feel good," he told reporters as he left the ice -- meaning he won't play in the tournament and putting any possibility of an NHL return on the back burner. Friend-of-Snapshots James Mirtle provides a link to Aftonbladet's article updating Forsberg's situation: November 5, Aftonbladet (roughly translated): "My feet cause for soreness. I have never been so closely [to the end] of my career here," says the world superstar to sportbladet.se ... Peter Forsberg: I ask to apologize to the entire Swedish people. I knew almost directly as I passed onto the ice that it did not hold. The feet cause me soreness, it is problem that has reappeared. Sportbladet.se's Jenny Modin: Have you ever been so here closely to the end of your career? Forsberg: no. ... It was five minutes before the [practice's] end that Foppa suddenly aborted the training and distressed sat in his locker-room stallt. During several one-minute-long deliberations with the [national team's] management, Forsberg gave [hints] of that something was error. With lowered glance, he submitted the ice in order to without a word to make a commitment to[the Three Crowns, i.e. the Swedish National team's] [dressing room]. Ten minutes latter he met the assembled press corps. Forsberg: It doesn't look like, I have been able to come back. I will not go [practice] again. It became the world's shortest comeback. I am hugely sorry, for everyone that has come here for my sake, and everyone that has bought tickets - but this [ankle] does not hold. I have [made] jokes out myself sufficient during the last years. Press member: Do you believe that you will play [in a] [competitive game] this year? Forsberg: No, I do not believe so. I do not see lightly out [i.e. feel optimstic about] for the future. Media How difficult does it feel? Forsberg: Extremely difficult. There are hopes [i've had] since I worked [out] last summer after the operation, but I [have] no idea presently.

http://redwingscorner.blogspot.com/ Thursday, October 25, 2007 Howard recalled by Wings Jimmy Howard will be with the Red Wings Friday and Chris Osgood will start in net against San Jose. Dominik Hasek is listed as day-to-day with a hip injury. Dallas Drake was put on injured reserve retroactive to one week ago, meaning that he can come off the IR any day. Press release from the Griffins ... GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings announced today the recall of goaltender Jimmy Howard from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. In four games played this season, Howard shows a 3-1-0 record with a 3.00 GAA and a 0.902 save percentage. With a 29-save performance on Oct. 11, he became just the fourth Griffins goalie to earn 50 career wins (Joey MacDonald 87, 2002-06; Marc Lamothe 54, 2002-04; Mike Fountain 55, 1999-01). Howard will be available for action Friday when Detroit hosts the San Jose Sharks at 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on FSN Detroit. Posted by Bruce MacLeod at 4:08 PM

http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2007/10/dr...d_cheekbon.html Drake has a fractured cheekbone, will miss next two games Posted by George James Malik October 22, 2007 15:39PM The Detroit Free Press's Helene St. James says that Red Wings forward Dallas Drake does in fact have a fractured cheekbone, but, in classic Drake fashion, he won't miss much time: October 22, Detroit Free Press: Dallas Drake will be out at least the next two games, Red Wings general manager Ken Holland just told me. Drake has a hairline fracture in his left cheekbone, the result of being rammed into the boards last Thursday by San Jose defenseman Kyle McLaren. Drake flew home to Traverse City to spend time with his family Friday, and saw a specialist Monday. "No surgery is required," Holland said. "The doctor has ruled him out Wednesday and Friday. The doctor wants him to take a week from the time of the injury to give it time to heal." Holland also said Drake will have to wear a full face shield when he does return. Drake is scheduled to see doctors again Friday, and if everything goes well, Holland anticipates bringing Drake on the three-game trip to Western

http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2007/10/gr...quarter_fr.html Grigorenko earns no quarter from Holland Posted by George James Malik October 22, 2007 15:34PM The Detroit Red Wings weren't impressed with Igor Grigorenko's decision to skip the Wings' summer prospect camp in early July, a.k.a. the "strength and conditioning" camp, as they felt that he would both benefit from some lead time in terms of working toward an NHL level of fitness, understanding on-ice terms in English, and building up some familiarity with the Detroit area. The Red Wings' brass was doubly unimpressed with the fact that Grigorenko showed up to camp at least ten pounds overweight, unable to understand any English whatsoever, and unable to keep up with the pace of prospect tournament games, never mind exhibition games. Grigorenko's coming up from Grand Rapids that's plain old ticked off at Grigorenko's continued unwillingness to learn English and his inability to adapt to the pace of North American hockey: October 22, Detroit News: The practice jersey is in the locker, the nameplate is there. Igor Grigorenko will be with the Red Wings at practice Tuesday morning. But hold the applause, and you're excused if the level of anticipation isn't very high. Once a highly-touted prospect, Grigorenko, 24, was in a serious car accident in the spring of 2003 and hasn't been the same player since. After a mediocre exhibition season in September, in his first taste of NHL hockey, Grigorenko was sent to Grand Rapids, where he failed to register even one point in five games with the Griffins. "He's been average," general manager Ken Holland said. "He's still adapting to the game over here." Normally, Grigorenko wouldn't have been promoted. But he has an option to return to Russia and earn $1 million to play in the Russian Elite League if he isn't on an NHL roster by the end of the October. This will be an opportunity for Grigorenko to show the Wings he's still a capable player. "He'll be evaluated every day," Holland said. "I don't know what the future holds. We're in the business of winning hockey games. He has to show he can help our team." The Red Wings have pushed back Johan Franzen's return to the end of the month, which is much closer to the prescribed 4-week recovery period for 2nd-degree MCL sprains, so Grigorenko has two weeks to prove that he's worth keeping over Aaron Downey or Matt Ellis. October 22, Detroit Free Press: Holland said he expects Franzen back maybe within two weeks). And tomorrow, Igor Grigorenko will re-join the team after three unremarkable weeks in Grand Rapids, during which time he had no points in five games. Given that he showed up at camp out of shape and now hasn't impressed in the American Hockey League, it's inconceivable he'll be able to win a job in Detroit - barring a slew of injuries, anyways. While Grigorenko has skill he has no speed. Given how well Tomas Kopecky, Matt Ellis and Aaron Downey played over the past week, Grigorenko would have to be brilliant over the next few days to earn a spot in the rotation. It doens't help his motivation that he can opt out of his deal by Nov. 1 and return to his native Russia, where he can earn around $1 million playing in the Russian Super League. This is an unfortunate situation all around because Grigorenko has more than enough talent, especially in his world-class hands, to make his lack of foot speed all but negligible via give-and-go plays and smart positioning, but he's just not willing to put in the effort at this point. It's no fault of the Wings' management--they've done all they can. Grigorenko's future lies in his hands.

http://redwingscorner.blogspot.com/ Igor Grigorenko didn't want to be in Grand Rapids any more. So Grigorenko, who has an out clause in his contract that allows him to return to Russia if he's in the minors for more than three weeks, refused to remain in Grand Rapids any longer and has thus been recalled by the Red Wings. He's in Detroit now, on the team's active roster and will practice with the club Tuesday. Red Wings management asked Grigorenko to remain in Grand Rapids beyond the three weeks, but he refused and would have returned to Russia instead. In his three-week, five-game stay in Grand Rapids, Grigorenko tallied zero points and two penalty minutes. When asked where Grigorenko fits in the lineup plans, coach Mike Babcock answered: "That's a good question. Everything here's on an at-earn basis. We'll see if he has enough pace to fit in." To make room on the roster, the Red Wings put Johan Franzen (MCL) on injured reserve. Franzen, however, moved closer to being able to return to the lineup, practicing with the Red Wings at City Arena, Monday. Franzen participated in all drills except a four-on-four scrimmage that involved contact. When Franzen is ready to come off IR, then the Red Wings will have to bump a forward from their roster. The list of players most likely to be cut includes Grigorenko, Aaron Downey and Matt Ellis. Both Ellis and Downey were praised by Babcock for their play on the team's recent four-game western trip.

http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2007/10/fo...agent_expe.html Former Wing Markov's agent expects his client to sign with an NHL team shortly Posted by George James Malik October 17, 2007 13:52PM From Sportsnet's Hockey Hearsay: the Boston Bruins are apparently still in the mix for former Detroit Red Wings defenceman Danny Markov, but Markov's still asking for a raise--a $3 million-plus contract, likely on a multi-year (2-3 year) deal, and many contending teams, like the Bruins, don't have that cap space right now: October 17, Boston Globe: Veteran defenseman Danny Markov remains for hire, and the runaway rumor mill that is the Internet continues to identify Boston as a potential landing spot. Markov's agent, Jay Grossman, yesterday would neither confirm nor deny that the Bruins are among the clubs courting his client. However, he earmarked an asking price of some $3 million a year for the well-traveled blue liner, and that price tag would be difficult for Boston to take on with the club's cap figure already very close to the $50.3 million max. "I don't want to talk in specifics, relating to any team," said Grossman, reached via telephone late in the afternoon in Florida, where his client continues to train. "Several of the teams we are talking to - and the list has expanded - would have to make cap space available somehow." Meanwhile, the Bruins, better on defense than many expected, could use a player with Markov's skills. He plays aggressively, often eyeing the big hit, and at age 31, is still considered a plus skater. With the Bruins, he would be considered a top-pair defenseman, which would easily justify his asking price. First, though, Boston would have to move nearly an equal amount of money, and with so few moving parts, that's not likely. "He's versatile. He can play the skill game," said Grossman. "He played the first unit on the [2002] Russian Olympic team. He can play the power play. With Detroit last year, he played primarily a defensive role, and he has the huge physical component to his game." Grossman said he expects Markov, who earned $2.5 million last season with the Red Wings, to sign a deal "relatively soon." When asked to sharpen the timeline, the agent said something likely would be finalized within the next couple of days.

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=220668&hubname=nhl TSN.ca Staff 10/15/2007 1:23:03 PM The Philadelphia Flyers placed suspended forward Jesse Boulerice on waivers Monday. Boulerice is serving a 25-game suspension for cross-checking Vancouver Canucks centre Ryan Kesler in the head last Wednesday. "I reacted in a bad way - the wrong way," Boulerice said following the game. "I wanted to give him a hit back." "We're by no means condoning what happened," Flyers coach John Stevens said after the team announced the suspension. "He's going to have to stand up and pay the price." Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren echoed the same sentiment. "I think we're in agreement that there's no place in the game for this anymore. I do think it was an isolated incident. Jesse lost his composure, lost his cool. It's something that's not the right thing to do, at any time," he said. Boulerice, 29, signed with the Flyers after completing a tryout in the exhibition season.

http://redwingscorner.blogspot.com/ Goalie rotation Coach Mike Babcock said after Thursday's practice that Dominik Hasek will start Friday's game against Chicago at Joe Louis Arena and Chris Osgood will start Sunday's game in Los Angeles. Hasek missed a start Wednesday because of pain above his knee after taking a shot in Monday's game that hit an unprotected area of his leg. "It (Thursday) was my first practice after two days (in which) I could work hard," said Hasek. "I didn't feel any problems to go up and down quickly, make second or third saves. Tomorrow, it will be even better. But even today I felt great."

The former Flames and Wings winger might be laying low, but he hasn't completely vanished. In fact, he attended Calgary's practice at the Max Bell rink on Monday before the team jetted to Detroit -

Dominik Hasek continues to be bothered by a sore right knee after being hit right above the kneecap in Monday’s game against Edmonton. ¬He (Hasek) felt okay yesterday but he didn’t feel right, and there’s no sense fooling around, coach Mike Babcock said. Babcock was quick to point out this isn’t anything that will keep Hasek out of the lineup for long. He has a bruise, it’s not like he has an injury, said Babcock, who added Hasek will back up Osgood against the Flames. Babcock won’t be tempted to bring Hasek off the bench if something were to go wrong. I didn’t bring him off the bench that many times last year when he was backing up, did I Babcock said. I’m comfortable (with Hasek in reserve).
