Cleary OK after surgery on left knee Dan Cleary's disappointing season can be explained by two small reasons. Cleary underwent surgery Tuesday to repair two tears to his left meniscus. "It was bothering me all year," Cleary said. "I basically couldn't walk the last seven months. I had to brace myself against a wall just to get upstairs, but then when I'd hit the ice, it would be OK, so that's why we didn't do the surgery until now." Cleary, who also had a groin injury and a separated shoulder during the season, had just 34 points in 64 games. "Now I can't wait to start training again," he said. "This is going to be my hardest summer of training, and I'm going to come back stronger than ever next season." Helene St. James

Reward offered for return of Crosby's Olympic gear

Crosby’s Gear Found Blog: KK Hockey By Paul 03/10/10 at 03:09 PM ET | Comments (1) via the CP at TSN, Sidney Crosby’s missing stick and glove have been found. Hockey Canada says Crosby’s missing Olympic equipment were misplaced rather than stolen. Crosby’s stick was accidentally placed in a shipment bound for the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame in St. Petersburg, Russia, that ended up getting intercepted in Toronto. And one of his gloves was put in a bag belonging to Patrice Bergeron, who sat beside him in the locker-room. -
http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/20...y_has_shou.html Red Wings' Kirk Maltby has shoulder surgery, not expected to return for playoffs By Ansar Khan March 02, 2010, 3:23PM The Detroit Red Wings don’t expect to have forward Kirk Maltby for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs, after surgery Tuesday on the 37-year-old forward’s right shoulder revealed more damage than anticipated, general manager Ken Holland said. “The damage to the shoulder is a lot worse than we anticipated,’’ Holland said. “There is bone chips, micro fracture. “If we make it to the third or fourth round of the playoffs, there is a chance he could be back, but we anticipate his season is over.’’ Maltby’s career as a Red Wings, which began in March 1996 when the club acquired him in a trade for defensive prospect Dan McGillis, could be over as well. “From talking to him, I think he’s like to play (next season),’’ Holland said. “I have interest in him coming back. A lot depends on if his shoulder is in good shape. We’ll address it in June.’’

Call off the trade watch? By George Malik February 12, 2010, 2:36PM The Detroit Free Press's Helene St. James reports that the Red Wings have made their one and only pre-Olympic roster freeze move in waiving Brad May: February 12, Detroit Free Press: Red Wings spokesman John Hahn said the team won’t make any other moves today – and at 3 p.m., the NHL freezes trades until the Feb. 28 end of the Olympics. That means either the Wings will have to keep Lilja on long-term injured reserve, or waive somebody who makes at least $700,000. So how does this work? If May clears waivers by noon Saturday, he will be sent to Grand Rapids. Lilja has been out since last Feb. 28 battling a concussion, but he has felt good during a conditioning stint in the minors and is to play his last game in the AHL tonight. The Wings expect to clear him shortly afterward. Lilja would add needed size on the back end. “He’s a big body on the back end, he’s a great penalty killer, good shot-blocker," Mike Babcock said. "Because of his size, he’ll make a huge difference to our team. He’s a real positive guy, a real good teammate, good energy guy.†I'm just guessing here, but maybe the Wings are going to keep Lilja on the LTIR until after the Olympics so as to buy themselves time to make a move when the trade freeze ends...

He expects both to play Saturday against Ottawa in the last game before the Olympic break. Holmstrom is playing tonight -- http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/20...strom_will.html
-
From MLIVE: Detroit Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom said this morning that he is hoping to return to the lineup Jan. 29 or 31, which seems overly optimistic considering he has taken only a few light spins on the ice and hasn't felt good. He suffered a hairline fracture in his foot when he was hit with a shot after practice on Jan. 6. "I've been skating three times this week, nothing really serious,'' Holmstrom said. "I didn't feel that good, couldn't really push away. I don't want to push away either because it could get worse.''

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Ville Leino will return to the lineup for the Detroit Red Wings tonight against the New York Islanders, replacing Brad May. That's the only change for Detroit, which will start the game with the same lines and defense pairings it's been using lately: Bertuzzi-Datsyuk-Zetterberg Cleary-Filppula-Miller Draper-Helm-Eaves Leino-Abdelkader-Maltby Lidstrom-Rafalski Meech-Stuart Lebda-Janik Howard (starting) Osgood The Islanders (19-19-8) are in last place in the Atlantic Division, but are 6-2-1 in their last nine games. "They've been real good in this last while,'' Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "Their fourth line, with (Josh) Bailey and (Rob) Schremp has really scored for them. Their specialty teams seem to be rolling. (Dwayne) Roloson has given them solid goaltending. I just like what they're doing. They got a youthful group that can skate. The whole team looks like it's a first-round pick. They got some skill and they're going to be a test for us.'' Kyle Okposo has a goal in each of the last three games. John Tavares has 16 goals and 29 points, tied for the rookie scoring lead with Matt Duchene of Colorado. "(Tavares) is a gifted, gifted scorer with an elite mind for the game,'' Babcock said.

from the CP at the Globe and Mail, Former NHLer Boyd Devereaux will have a lot to think about in the weeks ahead as he recuperates from a terrifying broken neck. Competing at the Spengler Cup in Switzerland through the holidays, Devereaux and the rest of the Canadian team were off to a roaring start. The Kitchener, Ont., resident and former Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs centre was being double-shifted by Craig MacTavish when he entered the offensive zone and attempted to collect a loose puck in a Dec. 28 game against host-team Davos. That’s when Davos blue-liner Beat Forster caught Devereaux with his head down. Devereaux crumpled to the ice, but was helped to his feet and assisted to the bench. He soon noticed a tingling sensation in his arms.

http://www.mlive.com/griffins/index.ssf/20...ola_headed.html Mattias Ritola admitted he was a little surprised when the parent club Detroit Red Wings recalled him from the Grand Rapids Griffins on Monday. Imagine how shocked the 22-year-old left wing must have been after the Griffins’ 7-4 loss to the Chicago Wolves on Saturday night at Van Andel Arena. The Red Wings recalled Ritola again after the game, and he’ll be available for Detroit’s game at Columbus on Monday night.

From MLIVE: COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Detroit Red Wings defenseman Andreas Lilja doesn't blame Mikael Samuelsson, his best friend and former teammate, for ripping Swedish Olympic officials for excluding him from the team. Samuelsson told Vancouver reporters: "Probably going to get in trouble for this, but they (Team Sweden officials) can go (expletive) themselves.'' Lilja liked his reaction. “I think it’s kind of nice when someone says what they really think instead of saying, 'OK, it was their decision, nothing I can do about it,' '' Lilja said. "Nice that people show emotions because he’s (ticked off). I don’t blame him.’’ Samuelsson's snub surprised many. He played on Sweden's 2006 gold medal-winning team and is having a decent season in Vancouver, with 10 goals and 14 assists. “I was a little bit surprised he didn’t get picked,'' Red Wings and Team Sweden captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. "It’s not an easy decision for the coaching staff to pick players and someone’s going to be upset.’’ Said Lilja: “When I look at our Swedish team, he’s one of the guys I would put in there first. He felt obviously mistreated.’’ Samuelsson is noted for his temper on the ice, but off the ice, Lilja said, “He’s compete opposite. He’s so nice and calm off the ice. I don’t blame him for saying what he said.'' “He was emotional on the ice, in the card game on the plane,’’ Lidstrom said, laughing. “He’s a competitive player. It really shows on the ice, even though he’s not a fighter, he gets his nose in there and he’s not afraid to get dirty.’’

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/20...o_to_sit_o.html Center Valtteri Filppula had the cast removed from his broken right wrist on Sunday. He wore a splint while skating by himself after practice. He will start skating more and said he remains on schedule to return later this month. "Now I'll try to get the movement back slowly, get the strength back; it’s going to take a while, but hopefully not too long,'' Filppula said. "It’s really stiff, so I have to patient with it.'' He's not yet ready to stick-handle or shoot. "Got to get the strength back first, then I can start stick-handling and do other stuff on the ice,'' Filppula said. "I think I’m pretty much on track.’’

http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2009/12/re...day_with_t.html The Detroit Red Wings made their annual team visit to Chlidren's Hospital on Tuesday (emphasis on "team visit"--many players spend days at the hospital minus media attention, and coach Mike Babcock invites children with pediatric cancer to every home game), . . . http://multimedia.detnews.com/pix/photogal...spital12012009/

“I saw it on tape, and it looks awful. The sad part is people see this, little kids see it, and they think maybe that’s the way professional guys act. It’s not something I’ve ever done, and it’s not something I’ll do again. I’m terribly sorry.†-Keith Ballard of the Florida Panthers on the Vokoun incident

Per Sportsnet: Former Hart Trophy winner Peter Forsberg informed Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis that he will remain in Sweden this season and not attempt another comeback in the NHL. Gillis confirmed the news after speaking with Forsberg on Monday morning. On February 25, 2008, Forsberg signed a contract with the Colorado Avalanche for the remainder of the season, but played in just nine games due to a groin injury. Forsberg will play the remainder of the season in Sweden with league club MoDo.

You are lucky. I am the opposite. I usually go to 4-5 games a year and at least one playoff game. Rare they win. Hopefully that is changing since I went to last night's game.

Michael Nylander - Conditioning with Grand Rapids Griffins
96warrior replied to 40#1Fan's topic in General
from MLIVE: They did what now? Washington Capitals assign Michael Nylander to Grand Rapids Griffins for conditioning stint By George Malik October 21, 2009, 3:26PM Bizarre move via Kukla's Korner: The Washington Capitals, who have a functional AHL affiliate in the Hershey Bears, have assigned forward Michael Nylander and his $4.875 million salary to the Grand Rapids Griffins on a conditioning stint. The Detroit Red Wings have no interest whatsoever in an under-performing, injury-prone player who's been rumored to be bolting for the KHL for the past two seasons...and the Washington Post's Tarik El-Bashir attempts to make sense of the move: October 21, Washington Post: Michael Nylander has agreed to go to AHL Grand Rapids for a conditioning stint, I'm told. Nylander has NOT been traded. The veteran center, who has not suited up since being used sparingly in the playoffs, simply has agreed to play with the Griffins to get some game action without taking any ice time away from the Capitals' prospects in Hershey. How Nylander performs could determine what happens next. There has been a little interest from some KHL teams, but those clubs have also expressed concern about Nylander's conditioning and ability to come in and contribute because it's been so long since his last game. This is Nylander's chance to prove he can still play, and, perhaps, facilitate a loan/trade. The 37-year-old, by the way, did not have to clear waivers in order to be sent to Grand Rapids. He also still counts toward towards the Capitals' 23-man roster and his salary still counts against Washington's salary cap.
