    Lilja's Status

From MLIVE: Red Wings defenseman Andreas Lilja still battling through post-concussive headaches By George Malik October 19, 2009, 7:15PM Red Wings defenseman Andreas Lilja's post-concussive headaches have yet to subside, and he told the Free Press's Helene St. James that he's begun making a commute to Toronto for an alternative therapy in hopes of a breakthrough: October 18, Detroit Free Press: "I just went for acupuncture, for everything - hips, back, shoulders," he said. "It feels a little bit different, but, pretty much the same." Lilja said he is still experiencing headaches. "My patience," he said, "is really being tested right now. But, I just have to wait it out. There's not much really I can do." Lilja, who also went to Sweden with the Wings, is joining them on their upcoming trip out West because there's a specialist he wants to see during one of the stops.

    DirecTV dropping Versus network

http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2009/09/nh...be_to_dire.html Per the Globe and Mail's Bruce Dowbiggin...The Denver Post's Adrian Dater provided an update on the contentious negotiations between Versus and DirecTV, which may not cover the Detroit Red Wings' season-opener against the St. Louis Blues on Friday if the two sides cannot reach a resolution as to Versus' broadcast fee. Dater complimented the following article from last Saturday's Denver Post with a slate of full transcripts of his interviews with both sides on Tuesday night, but what matters at present can be summarized with a "cross your fingers" comment from DirecTV's VP of public relations: September 26, Denver Post: While no Versus programming has been available on DirecTV since Sept. 1 — exclusive sports fare that has included Indy Racing League and several major college football games — A DirecTV spokesman said this week the possible effects of incurring the wrath of NHL fans might be enough for the satellite provider to put Versus back on its listings, even if an agreement isn't reached by Thursday. "If we don't have a deal with Versus by the time hockey season starts, DirecTV would certainly be open to putting these games up for our customers while we continue to negotiate," DirecTV vice president of public relations Darris Gringeri said. While those words offer hope the situation may be cooling off, much of the rhetoric remains heated. Versus has taken out half-page newspaper ads slamming DirecTV for its decision and encouraging DirecTV subscribers to drop the provider. Versus president Jamie Davis said the ads are working, with DirecTV losing subscribers to other providers. "People like Dish Network have added 9 million new subscribers for Versus that weren't there before Sept. 1, and another million from other cable operators around the country," Davis said. "So we've made up the vast majority of the lost Versus subscribers on DirecTV, and when we looked at our viewership numbers from the first three weeks of September 2009, to last year at the same time — when we were on DirecTV — our ratings (have) been up nearly 30 percent. ... Davis said Versus isn't asking for any price increase, and said the real issue is his network's refusal to sign a long-term agreement with DirecTV that, he said, would give DirecTV the right to charge more for Versus by placing it in a new split of tiered package channels. ... Said Gringeri: "If we don't get a fair deal, then all of our customers are going to have to pay more, and we don't want to have to pass that sort of increase on to them in these financial times."

    Red Wings Training Camp Notes

Update from MLIVE - Inside training camp: First cuts: Nine players were trimmed from the 57-man camp roster. Forwards Mitchell Callahan, Landon Ferraro, Stephen Johnston, Andrej Nestrasil and Brent Raedeke and defensemen Gleason Fournier and Brian Lashoff were assigned to their junior clubs. Forward Austin Fyten and goaltender Chris Whitley were released. Ferraro impresses: Coach Mike Babcock liked what he saw from Landon Ferraro, the club's top draft pick this year. "I thought the Ferraro kid has had a good rookie camp,'' Babcock said. "Played real well. He's got real change of pace. He's going to play (in the NHL) one day.'' Ferraro was sent back to his junior club, Red Deer. Tatar leads team: Tomas Tatar, the club's second pick this year, had a goal and an assist to lead Team Lindsay to a 4-1 victory against Team Howe in a scrimmage. "Looks like has a real nose for the net,'' Babcock said. View from the bench: The club has spent a lot of time in meetings and on the ice working on penalty killing. It was abysmal last season, with Detrpit finishing 25th in the NHL. Captain Nicklas Lidstrom said the key is applying more pressure on the puck and being more aggressive instead of backing off and giving the opposition more time. Injury report: Defenseman Andreas Lilja (post-concussion symptoms) skated by himself but remains out indefinitely. Center Henrik Zetterberg has practiced the past two days, showing no signs of the groin injury that bothered him last week. What's next: Practices 3 to 5:15 p.m. Tuesday at Centre I.C.E. Arena in Traverse City. The gold medal game between Team Lindsay and Team Delvecchio begins at 6 p.m. That's the end of training camp. The team will take buses back to Detroit and will open the preseason Wednesday at home against Philadelphia.

    Red Wings Training Camp Notes

In agreement about Leino/Flip. They looked great. Howard did struggle and let in some very weak goals. Thought Homer looked great. He's lost weight and I thought he was skating stronger. Not a Williams fan at all but I have to say that I thought he also looked good. Pleased to see Leino skate so hard to the net. Looking forward to practice tomorrow afternoon. Sad to see Lilija standing at the glass in street clothes watching them practice.

    OFFICIAL: 12y, $62.4m makes Hossa a 'Hawk

From Sports Illustrated: Source: NHL could void Hossa-Hawks contract 3 08:13 AM ET The NHL hasn't closed the books on the investigation into Marian Hossa's contract with the Chicago Blackhawks. But league sources have confirmed to Sun Media the consequences could be even stiffer than originally reported if the NHL decides that Hossa's new 12-year, $62.8 million contract circumvents the collective bargaining agreement and the salary cap. While the NHL is a long way from closing the books on the investigation, the 'Hawks could face stiff measures if they are found guilty. A league source confirmed the ultimate punishment would be voiding the contract altogether if Chicago is found guilty. Toronto Sun

Red Wings to hold "Hockeyfest" on 8/29

Yes, we got Steve Yzerman's autograph on his jersey. The only active player in attendance was Kopecky. We went to the season ticket holder (morning) session. Some more advice would be not to wear a jersey if you want autographs. It's easier to just pass it to the player when there are a lot of people around him. Will say it sounds like more players will be attending this weekend. I declined season ticket holder passes and not am regretting it. You will have fun.

Red Wings to hold "Hockeyfest" on 8/29

My advice is to get in line ASAP to tour the locker-room. We were first in line last year and had no wait. I noted that was the line that got the longest and people had to wait.
