Holland confirms that Hudler will play in KHL

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/ Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said there's a real possibility that forward Jiri Hudler will play in Russia next season if he accepts an offer from Moscow Dynamo of the Kontinental Hockey League. Reports out of the Czech Republic indicate Hudler has signed a two-year deal with Dynamo. There is some uncertainty, however, if this is his just his Plan B if he is not satisfied with whatever deal he gets from the Wings. "It's a real possibility he's going to take this (Russian) offer,'' Holland said. "He'd be taking a lot less money to stay in the NHL.'' What's confusing is that Hudler filed for arbitration on Sunday, indicating a strong desire to get a deal done with Detroit. Holland said he not yet heard back from Hudler's North American agent, Petr Svoboda, but that if reports that Hudler had signed the Russian deal are true he would "go on the assumption that he's gone.'' Holland said Svoboda told him on Monday of the Russian offer. Holland and coach Mike Babcock spoke with Hudler on Tuesday. Holland said Hudler gave him no indication about what he was going to do. The Wings have a long-term offer on the table to Hudler, who earned $1.15 million last season. Svoboda told Holland the Wings' offer was a good one. But it can't come close to matching Dynamo's offer, which is worth significantly more than the $2 million a year TSN is reporting. Plus, it's tax-free and heavily front-loaded. Hudler apparently is torn and confused. He wants to stay in Detroit, but the Russian offer is a lot of money to turn down.

Holland confirms that Hudler will play in KHL

Reports suggest that Jiri Hudler has signed 'safety contract' with Dynamo Moscow Posted by George James Malik July 08, 2009 09:11AM Courtesy of Paul Kukla and HFBoards... IDNes.cz is reporting that Red Wings forward Jiri Hudler has called an "evening press conference" to state that he's signed a contract with Dynamo Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League. I would suggest that it is highly likely that this is a "safety contract," designed to give Hudler more leverage in his contract negotiations with Detroit. update 9:55 AM: Paul Kukla says that the presser will take place at noon EDT. Update #2 9:57 AM: I'm not one for stirring up stuff, but I can tell you that NO member of the Red Wings' brass has appeared in the stands at prospect camp this morning.

Ville Leino signs a 2 year extension

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/20...no_to.html#more Red Wings sign Ville Leino to two-year deal by Ansar Khan Monday July 06, 2009, 2:33 PM The Red Wings have signed forward Ville Leino to a two-year contract worth $800,000 a season. The club is counting on the skilled Finnish forward to help compensate for some of the offense it lost with the departures of Marian Hossa and Mikael Samuelsson. Leino, 25, had five goals and four assists in 13 games for Detroit during the regular season. He spent most of the season in Grand Rapids due to a lack of salary-cap space. "We like his hockey sense, his ability to protect the puck in the offensive zone,'' general manager Ken Holland said. "He's got a scoring touch and he goes to the hard areas. "He just needs to adjust to the pace of the game.'' Leino's contract is a one-way deal, meaning he'll get paid that amount whether he is in the NHL or the AHL. But the Wings have no intention of sending him to Grand Rapids. He is their 10th forward signed to a one-way deal. They need at least two more and they don't have much cap space -- roughly $2.5 to $3 million. Holland is continuing talks with left wing Jiri Hudler, saying that he is not close to a deal. But he is hoping to avoid an arbitration hearing, the date for which should be set within the next couple of days.

I don't even think everyone in line got tickets. The coordinator was worried when we got to the front of the line about that and the line was still snaked around the arena inside. We always ordered our tickets by fax but this year decided to drive up from the Detroit area on Friday and buy them. Glad we made that decision.

    Training Camp 2009?

We got in line at 8:00 a.m. and were very surprised by how many people were in line before us. Curious to see if everyone in line got tickets. We got tickets for all three days but the man who seemed to be in charge didn't think those that came late would get tickets.

    09-10 Cap

Cap News Blog: KK Hockey By Paul 06/25/09 at 03:28 PM ET | Comments (1) via Larry Brooks of the NY Post, The NHL players union has voted to trigger the 5-percent escalator on the 2009-10 salary cap, The Post has learned. This means that the 2009-10 cap will remain within a couple of hundred thousand dollars of last season’s figure of $56.7 million.
  16. Holland On The Wings Blog: KK Hockey By Paul 06/25/09 at 01:11 PM ET | Comments (0) Ken Holland was just on NHL Live, here is a recap. Until the Wings know what the cap figure is, they really cannot make any moves. Regarding Hossa, he has talked with Hossa’s agent this week, and believes the Wings are Hossa’s first choice. If he can get a cap number that satisfies both parties, then they will sign it. No official offer has been made, waiting for the hard cap number. Regarding the draft, Wings will take a skater that fits into the Wings philosophy. The person they draft is probably 4-5 years away from the NHL and they are looking at the skill of the player.

    09-10 Cap

http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/ Salary cap wiggle room may add a few hundred thousand dollars to the 08-09 figure Posted by George James Malik June 25, 2009 06:38AM The Canadian Press's Chris Johnston trumpeted the familiar party line regarding the salary cap, which (if you believe Gary Bettman) will reach its final figure for the 09-10 season when the NHLPA informs the NHL whether it exercised its 5% inflator (which it will) on Thursday... June 24, Canadian Press: [bettman] also said the salary cap has yet to be set for next season, but he expects it to be close to, or slightly below, this year's figure of about US$56 million. The Globe and Mail's Sean Gordon, on the other hand, dropped a bit of a bombshell regarding the cap-related news that the Board of Governors heard from the Chairman: June 25, Globe and Mail: The teams also discussed the salary cap for the coming season, which Bettman said is expected to be at or near the $56.7-million set last year, although it could rise slightly. The governors' meeting was mostly consumed with presentations about the finances of the past season and projections into the future - the league continues to expect the salary cap to fall in 2010-11. Bettman's overall assessment of the meeting was: "kind of uneventful." For fans of a team like the Wings, which needs all the cap room it can get, a few hundred thousand dollars here or there makes a difference.
  18. http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2009/06/re...lland_says.html Red Wings GM Ken Holland says negotiations with free agents must wait until 09-10 cap determined, leans toward Jimmy Howard as Chris Osgood's back-up Posted by George James Malik June 23, 2009 03:50AM Red Wings GM Ken Holland told both the Windsor Star's Dave Waddell and MLive.com's own Ansar Khan that he can't really move in terms of making contract offers to free agents-to-be Marian Hossa, Mikael Samuelsson, Tomas Kopecky, Darren McCarty, Aaron Downey, or Ty Conklin until the NHL firms up its salary cap figure for the 09-10 season: June 23, Windsor Star: "Until I know the cap, it's hard for me to do anything," said Holland, who expects the cap to remain around US$56-million. Holland also shot down a report that Mikael Samuelsson had turned down an offer from the Wings. That would be USA Today's Kevin Allen's report. "I haven't made an offer to anybody," Holland said. "Never negotiated with Samuelsson. I haven't been in a position to make any offers (to unrestricted free agents)." Holland did make qualifying offers to restricted free agents Jiri Hudler and Ville Leino. The Wings are also still undecided on whether they'll re-sign free agents Darren McCarty and Aaron Downey to new two-way deals. This surprises me a bit: As for free-agent goaltender Ty Conklin, it sounds like the Wings are likely to go with homegrown prospect Jimmy Howard next season. "We feel good about Howard, spent four years developing him. Given Jimmy's age and the four years we spent in development, the next stop is the NHL.'' Holland reiterated his comments to MLive.com's own Ansar Khan: June 23, MLive.com: Holland has made qualifying offers to Hudler and forward Ville Leino in order to retain their rights. He said he has not made any other offers since the end of the season and has not had talks with Samuelsson's agent. "I haven't been in a position to make any offers,'' Holland said. "Until I know the cap, I don't know what I got to spend.'' Holland said he hasn't decided whether to offer contracts (two-way deals) to forwards Darren McCarty and Aaron Downey, who spent most of the season with AHL affiliate Grand Rapids. He also must settle on a backup goaltender, whether to make an offer to veteran Ty Conklin, who is unrestricted, or go with young Jimmy Howard, who is out of minor-league options. "We feel good about Howard, spent four years developing him,'' Holland said. As for Marian Hossa? Because the Red Wings have little salary cap space, their offer to Hossa is not expected to average much more than $4 million a season. It could be as long as 10 years, structured similarly to the front-loaded deals signed by Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen, where the player earns $1 million per season toward the end of the pact, lowering the cap hit. Hossa could get a higher average salary elsewhere, but probably not as lengthy a deal. The term could work in Detroit's favor. Hossa, who has stated all season that he wants to remain in Detroit, might opt to sign, for example, a 10-year, $40 million pact with the Red Wings as opposed to a six-year, $36 million deal with another club.

    Training Camp 2009?

HOCKEYTOWN NORTH Detroit Red Wings Training Camp NHL Prospects Tournament DRWTC Golf Classic & Dinner of Champions FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 16, 2009 Red Wings camp cranks up In-person ticket sale set for June 27 TRAVERSE CITY – Short and sweet. Those three words aptly describe the 12th edition of Detroit Red Wings Training Camp at Centre ICE arena in Traverse City. With a two-week Olympic respite wedged in the middle of the National Hockey League’s 2009-10 regular season, and the Red Wings opening the campaign with a pair of games in Sweden, the 2009 training camp will be compressed into three days of on-ice action. “It’s the shortest camp in our history,†said camp director Pete Correia. “Many of the (NHL) teams have adjusted their camps and preseason schedules a bit this year with the Olympics moving everything up. Add the Red Wings’ trip to Europe to open the season, and it’s a unique scenario that gives them just three days on the ice up here.†Fans can purchase tickets for the Sept. 13-15 training camp during the first in-person ticket sale, scheduled for June 27 at Centre ICE arena from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. If any tickets remain, a by-fax sale will commence on July 20. “We’re anticipating pretty high demand again this year, especially given the abbreviated camp schedule and with the (Red Wings) coming off another run to the Stanley Cup Finals,†Correia added. “We’re expecting another sellout.†The Red Wings hit the ice on Sunday, Sept. 13 with a workout and intrasquad scrimmage, followed by the annual Gold Medal Game on Monday, Sept. 14, and the culminating Red & White Game on Tuesday, Sept. 15. The training camp festivities kick off on Friday, Sept. 11 at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, with the Detroit Red Wings Training Camp Golf Classic and Dinner of Champions, where patrons enjoy a day of golf on the Resort’s renowned courses with a Red Wings player, coach or staffer as the fifth member of their group, followed by a dinner and sport memorabilia auctions at Governor’s Hall. Detroit team officials are also mulling a possible Red Wings Alumni vs. Management game on Saturday, Sept. 12 at Centre ICE, though nothing has been finalized. “They seem to have some genuine interest in that, and are trying to firm up some details,†Correia explained. “If that comes together, and we hope that it will, it’d add kind of an unofficial fourth day to the camp. We’d have a separate ticket sale with a $10 price point for all seats.†The Red Wings Training Camp will be preceded once again by the NHL Prospects Tournament, which only recently rounded out the eight-team event with the addition of the Carolina Hurricanes. They’ll be joined by the top prospects from Detroit, Atlanta, Columbus, Dallas, Minnesota, St. Louis and the New York Rangers for the four-day event, set for Sept. 6, 7, 9 and 10. General admission tickets are $5 each, and are good for an entire day’s worth of games (four). “For a couple of weeks, we get to have some of the best hockey anywhere right here in our building,†Correia said. “It’s a great opportunity for fans of the region, who might not otherwise get a chance to enjoy professional hockey of this caliber.†Detroit Red Wings Training Camp | NHL Prospects Tournament DRWTC Golf Classic & Dinner of Champions c/o Centre ICE 1600 Chartwell Drive, Suite A – Traverse City, Michigan 49686 www.redwingstrainingcamp.com

    Datsyuk Game 4 Status

UPDATE: Coach Mike Babcock just said that Pavel Datsyuk told him that he's planning to play, but the final decision hasn't been made yet. Babcock said it's not his decision, meaning Datsyuk and the trainers will make the final call. Babcock said that the only lineup change at the moment is Kris Draper in and Justin Abdelkader out. That said, everything points to Datsyuk's return, including the way he's practicing. Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said that he's expecting Datsyuk to play.

    Datsyuk Game 4 Status

http://redwingscorner.blogspot.com/ Datsyuk at the morning skate No surprise, but Pavel Datsyuk is on the ice now at the Wings' morning skate. That's a sign that he's still on track to return tonight from a foot injury. More to come on his status. The Penguins' morning skate had no surprises. Everyone was on the ice and the Pens worked out of the same lines they used in Game 3. The Wings' skate was optional.

No Samuelsson at Wings' morning skate

http://redwingscorner.blogspot.com/ No Samuelsson at Wings' morning skate Mikael Samuelsson wasn't on the ice this morning. Kris Draper was practicing as though he was going to play. Here are the lines they worked out of ... Franzen-Zetterberg-Hudler Holmstrom-Filppula-Hossa Draper-Helm-Cleary Leino-Abdelkader-Maltby Lidstrom-Rafalski Kronwall-Stuart Ericsson-Lebda Osgood Conklin Hudler is back up on Zetterberg's line. Perhaps they're anticipating not nearly as much Crosby time for that line and thus a defensive droppoff from Cleary to Hudler is palatable. The fourth and second lines remain intact. The new third line with Draper and Cleary on the wings is a pretty good checking unit if they're out for much time against Malkin or Crosby.
