From MLIVE: Babcock said Stuart is not expected to play in the near future. Stuart, who slammed his head into the boards at Phoenix, listed himself as day-to-day. "My head feels fine," Stuart said. "I hit the boards so hard it caused some issues with my ribs, and my back's sore, too."

From MLIVE: Johan Franzen (strained hip) practiced and coach Mike Babcock said he will play Tuesday. Defenseman Brad Stuart (sore ribs, back) didn't skate and won't play. Stuart said he's day-to-day. That means the Wings will play one man short, going with 11 forwards and six defensemen. Chris Osgood will start in goal. Babcock said he hadn't decided on his line combinations. This is how they looked in practice: Holmstrom-Zetterberg-Hossa Filppula-Franzen-Samuelsson Hudler-Draper-Cleary Kopecky-Datsyuk-Maltby Kronwall-Rafalski Lebda-Lilja Meech-Chelios Lidstrom (out) Stuart (injured) Osgood (starting) Conklin

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/20...dstrom_pav.html Red Wings' Nicklas Lidstrom, Pavel Datsyuk upset about having to sit out a game by Ansar Khan Monday January 26, 2009, 3:54 PM Update from Monday's practice: Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom and center Pavel Datsyuk both said they were disappointed in the NHL's decision to force them to sit out Tuesday's game in Columbus for withdrawing from the All-Star game due to injuries and not showing up in Montreal for the off-ice activities. The Wings said, contrary to reports, there is no appeal process. It's cut and dry. They will not play tonorrow. Technically, it's not a suspension, as they will be paid. It's simply the NHL enforcing an understanding it and the league's general managers agreed to last February. Lidstrom, who's been battling tentinitis in his right elbow for some time, said he didn't find out until Friday that he could have avoided the ban if he would have showed in Montreal for the off-ice part of it. But he said it didn't matter. He still wouldn't have showed up because he needed to stay home and get treatment for his elbow. Datsyuk said he wasn't aware this loophole either -- that's how Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby avoided a one-game ban. Datsyuk said he's not sure if his strained hip flexor would have allowed him to play Tuesday anyway.

http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2009/01/ze...agent_esti.html Zetterberg's Swedish agent estimates 30-40 hours of negotiations thus far Posted by George James Malik January 22, 2009 07:42AM Aftonbladet's Per Bjurman says that the Swedish state-owned Svergies Radio's Radiosporten awards a listener-chosen trophy called the "Jerringpris" to Sweden's best athlete, and Detroit Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg finished ninth in voting, but he expects Zetterberg to earn an award of a different kind in the near future: January 22, Aftonbladet: Negotiating a record contract Zäta will receive 60 million [swedish kronor] a year [or appoximately $7,113,221] - for ten years NHL star Henrik Zetterberg [is in] final negotiatons with Detroit. The new contract could be record-long--10 years. "It could be 10 years, but it can also swing downwards--if we agree," said Zetterberg's agent Gunnar Svensson. Since last summer Henrik Zetterberg, 28, has talked with the reigning Stanley Cup champions Detroit Red Wings about a contract extension. A series of variants [as to] how the new contract should look have existed, but now [it] seems that the parties have agreed that cooperation will continue long - very long. "A special team" "If Henrik played in Tampa Bay or Nashville enough contract negotiations would have already been finished. But Detroit is a special team with many expensive players with expiring contracts. Club management must put together a puzzle to keep all their stars," says Gunnar Svensson, Zetterberg's Swedish agent. Right now Detroit and Henrik Zetterberg are closer than ever. Everything indicates that there is a long-term contract. Possibly so long a contract that no Swedish NHL player has had in the past. Daniel Alfredsson signed a contract of eight years in 2004, which he then broke [ground on] in the fall and negotiated. But Zetterberg could get ten years from Detroit. One way [for] Detroit General Manager Ken Holland to show for the fans that Zetterberg is a Red Wing forever. 60 million [kronor] a year "It could sway between 10 years and down to five years or less. But it will be a longer contract, so is my feeling right now. It is a special contract and I estimate that it took 30-40 effective negotiating hours between my partner Marc Levine and Ken Holland to reach a solution," says Gunnar Svensson. According to a report in the Detroit Free Press [it's beginning] to move closer to the closure of the negotiations. The newspaper speculates that annual wages could end up at $7 million dollars, or 60 million [swedish kronor]. Over ten years, that would be 600 million [kronor] - the largest Swedish NHL contract ever in that instance. Ken Holland is optimistic that Zetterberg will sign a contract extension soon. "We have made progress over the last two weeks. There is a bit of work to do, but I am optimistic," said Holland [to the Free Press's Helene St. James]. March 4 is the last day for transactions in the NHL. The goal, for both Zetterberg and Detroit, is that the new contract will be ready then.

Elbow? Posted by George James Malik January 21, 2009 16:17PM From the Free Press's Helene St. James: January 21, Detroit Free Press: I just now got home from Phoenix, so let me clarify what's going on regarding the Red Wings and Sunday's All-Star Game: Neither Pavel Datsyuk nor Nicklas Lidstrom are going. Datsyuk is nursing a hip flexor. As of last night after the game, Mike Babcock said he didn't know whether it would prevent Datsyuk from appearing in his third All-Star Game, but by this morning, Datsyuk had cancelled. Datsyuk left midway through the third period of Tuesday's 6-3 loss at Phoenix. Lidstrom's injury is, per spokesman John Hahn, "suffering from elbow problems." Lidstrom finished last night's game.

http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/ Holland reports 'progress' made in Zetterberg negotiations Posted by George James Malik January 19, 2009 05:05AM The Detroit Free Press's Helene St. James reports that Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg should sign a long-term contract with Detroit in short order: January 19, Detroit Free Press: "We've made progress in the last two weeks," general manager Ken Holland said Sunday. "There's still a little work to be done, but I'm optimistic." The deal, possibly for as long as 10 years, will be creative, designed to keep the salary-cap hit around $7 million a season. Like every team, the Wings are wary of how the current economic climate will affect the salary cap.

From MLIVE: Strained hip idles Red Wings' Johan Franzen by Ansar Khan Sunday January 18, 2009, 2:45 AM Wings forward Johan Franzen said a strained hip forced him to leave Saturday's game in San Jose after a brief shift early in the third period. He said he's not sure how it happened, but that it wasn't from a hit. And he doesn't know if he'll be able to skate at the next practice, Monday in Phoenix. "It's a little bit from this morning. By the end of the second (period) I couldn't put any pressure on the legs,'' Franzen said. He said he's never experienced this before

From MLIVE: Red Wings' Derek Meech in for Kirk Maltby by Ansar Khan Wednesday January 14, 2009, 3:35 PM Update from Wednesday's morning skate in Anaheim: Derek Meech, who's alternated between defense and forward this season, will replace Kirk Maltby in the lineup tonight against the Ducks. Coach Mike Babcock was not happy to see the fourth line on the ice for two goals by Dallas in Monday's 5-4 overtime loss.

From MLIVE: Red Wings' Chris Chelios to play in Winter Classic by Ansar Khan Wednesday December 31, 2008, 4:09 PM Wings defenseman Chris Chelios just confirmed that he will be playing in Thursday's Winter Classic. It's only fitting, since he's a Chicago native who's attended more than 200 Cubs games at Wrigley Field and likely is playing his final NHL season. No word yet on who'll be sitting out.- 1,043 replies

Update from Red Wings Corner. Sammy is practicing: The Red Wings are going through their morning skate right now and it looks as though Chicago icon Chris Chelios won't play tomorrow if Nicklas Lidstrom is healthy. Chelios is working through drills with Derek Meech on a fourth defense pairing. Although Chelios isn't among the top six defensemen in the Wings' rotation, not making room for him in a special game in Chicago that is one of 82 regular-season tilts would count as a disappointment to Chelios. Of course, how Lidstrom's ankle -- which has kept him out of the past two games -- holds up after a skate in frigid weather has yet to be seen. Also of note, Mikael Samuelsson (flu) was skating. Darren McCarty was on the ice for the team photo, but left before drills began. Here are the lines at practice ... Holmstrom-Datsyuk-Franzen Hudler-Zetterberg-Hossa Cleary-Filppula-Samuelsson Kopecky-Draper-Maltby Lidstrom-Rafalski Kronwall-Stuart Lebda-Lilja Meech-Chelios Conklin Osgood -

I know Lidstrom is practicing. Is Sammy? -
Update on Lidstrom from MLIVE: Update from Monday's practice: Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom did not practice because his left ankle is still swollen and hasn't improved. An MRI Monday confirmed there is no break, however. Lidstrom said he's doubtful for Tuesday's game against the Blackhawks, but he's still hoping to play in Thursday's Winter Classic at Wrigley Field.

From MLIVE: Red Wings' Nicklas Lidstrom will miss Colordao game by Ansar Khan Saturday December 27, 2008, 2:40 PM Update from the morning skate in Denver: Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom isn't playing tonight against Colorado because his left ankle still is swollen and sore. X-rays during Friday's game in Nashville revealed no break, but it might require further testing once the swelling subsides. "It's about the same as last night,'' Lidstrom said."Still swollen, can't really move my foot the way I would have to in my skates. Day off tomorrow will help.'' There was no word on who will replace Lidstrom, as Chris Chelios said he didn't know yet if he or Derek Meech would be inserted into the lineup. It was an optional skate, no coaches attended it. Ty Conklin is starting in goal again, as trainers are being extra cautious with Chris Osgood's strained groin. Osgood said he would know on Monday whether he's playing Tuesday at home against Chicago. They haven't made it official, but it's safe to assume Conklin will start in the Winter Classic on Thursday, given Osgood's injury. They certainly wouldn't want to put Osgood out there in the cold this soon after an injury like this.

Further update from MLIVE: Sipple: Lidstrom's injury involved x-rays Posted by George James Malik December 26, 2008 22:03PM The Detroit Free Press's George Sipple reports good news...of a sort...regarding Red Wings defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom's injury: December 26, Detroit Free Press: Nicklas Lidstrom left Friday's game against the Predators with a lower body injury and will not return. Advertisement I spoke to Wings general manager Ken Holland at the start of the second intermission and he said Lidstrom left to get x-rays and they came back negative. Then that's definitely not a knee/groin tweak...That's a shot-blocking injury.
-
From MLIVE: Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom left early in the second period of Friday's game in Nashville with an undisclosed lower-body injury and will not return to the game. General manager Ken Holland said Lidstrom went for X-rays, which were negative. He would not reveal the nature of the injury. Lidstrom will be re-evaluated Saturday. He played one shift in the second period before leaving.

When examined this morning, his condition had improved greatly over last night, and he was released from the hospital. There is no timetable for his return to the ice.”

Osgood able to back-up, remains day-to-day by Ansar Khan Thursday December 18, 2008, 12:02 PM Update from Thursday's morning skate: Wings coach Mike Babcock said Chris Osgood is able to back-up Ty Conklin net tonight tonight against San Jose. Osgood, bothered by a strained groin, remains day-to-day. "We didn't skate him this morning because of the situation, he was ready to go but (trainers) decided to give him one more day off,'' Babcock said. The Wings will dress the same lineup defense they used on Monday, as Chris Chelios is a healthy scratch. Derek Meech didn't skate because of the flu. They skated with the same line combinations they practiced with on Monday:

http://redwingscorner.blogspot.com/ No Ozzie The Red Wings have taken the ice for the morning skate and Chris Osgood isn't here. Goalie coach Jim Bedard is manning one of the nets. Osgood missed yesterday's practice with a groin strain. Ty Conklin will start tonight. I'll update with who's going to back up Osgood. Derek Meech is not on the ice and he might be moved to make salary cap room to call up a goalie. And the lines are back to where they were a week ago ... Holmstrom-Datsyuk-Hossa Franze-Zetterberg-Samuelsson Hudler-Filppula-Cleary Kopecky-Draper-Maltby Lidstrom-Rafalski Kronwall-Stuart Lebda-Lilja Chelios (healthy scratch) Conklin (starts)

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/ Red Wings shuffle line combos, defense pairs by Ansar Khan Monday December 08, 2008, 12:54 PM Update from Monday's practice: When players arrived for practice, they were surprised to see significant changes to the line combinations and defense pairings. The most notable switch sees Henrik Zetterberg teaming up with Marian Hossa, who haven't played together except for a couple fo shifts in Saturday's game. Johan Franzen was playing center. Also, Nicklas Lidstrom was paired with Brad Stuart on defense. Here's how they practiced: Filppula-Datsyuk-Holmstrom Cleary-Zetterberg-Hossa Hudler-Franzen-Samuelsson Kopecky-Draper-Maltby On defense: Lidstrom-Stuart Kronwall-Rafalski Lebda-Lilja Meech-Chelios

Per TSN Ice Chips: Miikka Kiprusoff will be given a rare night off Wednesday as backup Curtis McElhinney will get the start in net against the Red Wings. - TSN

Update from Tuesday's practice: The Wings skated with the same line combinations and defense pairings they used in Monday's practice. But coach Mike Babcock said he will revert back to his usual defense pairings for Wednesday's game against Calgary (Lidstrom-Rafalski, Kronwall-Stuart, Lebda-Lilja). "I'm not going to play them like that tomorrow, I just wanted to freshen up for practice,'' Babcock said. "The big thing here is I haven't been displeased with my pairs at all. I just thought we needed to freshen up, needed to do something different for a few days.'' Up front, however, Babcock said he hadn't decided if he'll use the combinations from the last two days or go back to way it was before. "I haven't decided on that part yet,'' he said. This is how they have practiced: Filppula-Datsyuk-Holmstrom Cleary-Zetterberg-Hossa Hudler-Franzen-Samuelsson Kopecky-Draper-Maltby The power-play units remain the same: Holmstrom-Datsyuk-Hossa Lidstrom-Rafalski and ... Hudler-Zetterberg-Franzen Kronwall-Samuelsson Chances are, they'll start the game with the new combinations and then revert back if things aren't going smoothly. Ty Conklin will start in net Wednesday. Chris Osgood said he doesn't know yet if he'll start Friday in Dallas. Babccok seems to take into account a goalie's history against a team when deciding who will start, so I would expect to see Osgood in net against the Stars, whom he is 35-14-3 against lifetime, including the playoffs. Then again, if Conklin is sharp against Calgary, he might opt to stick with the hot hand.
