10/27 GDT: Red Wings 4, Kings 3 (SO)

From MLIVE: Grind Line reunited for tonight's game by Ansar Khan Monday October 27, 2008, 3:05 PM Update from the morning skate at the Staples Center in Los Angeles: Johan Franzen's knee injury has led to the reunion of The Grind Line, as coach Mike Babcock plans to use Kris Draper with Kirk Maltby and Darren McCarty, a unit that was first formed during the 1996-97 season and last played together for one shift on March 28 vs. St. Louis, when the trio started the game. "Grinding. I expect them to be good,'' Babcock said. "We need four lines competing and working hard and being energized and making a contribution. The way you play and the minutes and the wear and tear on the opposition is important.'' Dan Cleary fills Franzen's spot on the line with Henrik Zetterberg and Mikael Samuelsson. Cleary also will provide the net-front presence on the second power-play unit, with Zetterberg and Jiri Hudler up front. The Wings still have not recalled Ville Leino from Grand Rapids, as they want to see how Franzen's knee reacts in the next day or two. "We better figure out how long he's going to be out before we put him on long-term (injured reserve, which would cost him 10 games,'' Babcock said. "Near the end (of his time out), if you want to go retroactive, that's different. If Mule's ready after five, why wouldn't we have him? So right now (the roster) is what it is.'' Somebody asked Tomas Holmstrom if he had spoken to Franzen. "I called him, but he never answers his phone,'' Holmstrom said. "He doesn't even know his own number.'' Chris Osgood, as you would expect, will start in goal tonight.

    Wings looking to trade Quincey

http://redwingscorner.blogspot.com/ Life on the bubble Kyle Quincey said that he's not sure what the future holds for him other than he has a 1:30 p.m. meeting with the Red Wings' brass. The defenseman was told not to skate at this morning's practice. He is healthy. There are reports that Quincey is being shopped around the league. "I wish I knew something else," said Quincey. "I'm just ready for a new challenge or if I stay here, I'm ready for that challenge. I don't know anything." Ville Leino and Jonathan Ericsson -- two more bubble players -- did practice this morning, but both said they don't know where they'll be after the 3 p.m. roster deadline tomorrow. Ericsson said that if he had to guess, he'd be in Grand Rapids. Darren McCarty does know that he'll be in Detroit past tomorrow's roster deadline. But he doesn't know when his groin will be well enough to allow him to skate. McCarty will start the season on injured reserve. After he comes off that list, McCarty is hopeful about his chances of making the roster. "I'm still in the mix," said McCarty. General manager Ken Holland will hold a 2 p.m. press conference today.

He missed some action late in the preseason with a banged up knee, but he did play in Sunday's preseason finale.

    Holmstrom out with sore knee

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/ Holmstrom being cautious with sore knee by Ansar Khan Friday October 03, 2008, 12:26 PM Update from Friday's morning skate: Tomas Holmstrom won't play in tonight's preseason game against Toronto at Joe Louis Arena due to a sore left knee. He hopes to practice Saturday and play in Sunday's preseason finale vs. Buffalo. "Better today, it was sore the other day,'' Holmstrom said. "Just normal during preseason, sometime you get fluid in it and need to rest. Better to (rest) it now than have a setback in a couple of days.''
