That was sick. One of my favorite sporting events of all time. Amazing color and atmosphere. I'll always remember that game fondly. Anyway, tonight's attempt didn't work nearly as well, but I suppose you can't complain about the overall result.
-
Turco actually played well tonight. The Wings just were that good. Long way to go.

I'm pretty sure I've seen that stat before, although I've never seen it on a Versus broadcast. They really are poor. Eddie Olczyk is just painful as a color man. Slow, stuttering, rarely finishes a thought confidently, and rarely says anything illuminating. I thought the color guy during Games 3 & 4 of the Avs series was much better. But then, the better announcers are almost never part of the #1 pairing.

Any Leafs fan will tell you they've won it 13 times. In fact, they'll tell you over, and over, and over. Most lists credit them with 13 as well. We still have a little way to go.

Ditto. The one Avs player I have never been able to bring myself to hate. A class act all the way.

7-0, of course. That game exhorcised so many demons. It will always be my favorite Wings game of all time (aside from Cup clinchers, of course), and it would take something monumental to top it. Tonight was still very sweet, though. For those of us who lived through the the late nineties (particularly '99 and 2000), the mere thought that we would one day be sweeping the Avalanche aside like a mildly irritating gnat was a faint dream. 7-0 turned that on its head, and this series really confirmed that times sure have changed. And tonight was the exclamation mark.

My avatar is apparently off, then, since it has the Olde English D instead of the Gothic one. Oh well.

Heh, no kidding. Remember the first 59:27 of Game 4 in San Jose last year?

Good point. I'm a little uncomfortable with looking ahead. I remember when we took the first two in Colorado in '99, and everyone (Wings fans and analysts) were ready to hand us a third consecutive cup. Then we got hammered in four straight. You never know. Let's hope we win on Tuesday; everything else will sort itself out. If the analysts are really wrong, we'll show 'em. If we blow it, then I guess they were right.

I love Helm. The first time I saw him play, I thought, "Who is that guy throwing hits and winning battles behind the net? Did he just get called up?" He really has been a nice surprise, and he deserves to be kept around.
-
A Wings-Stars conference final would be appropriate, since it'd be ten years since '98. There's a long way to go in both series before that'd be a reality, though. Colorado isn't done yet, and the Sharks certainly aren't either.
-
Not sure how this one will go. I think Colorado took a lot of confidence from how they finished Game 1, but we still won, and we're still better than them. Going up 2-0 would be crucial. Hope we do it.

Incase you needed yet another reason to hate Bettass
Shockwave180 replied to lfd250's topic in General
Can we stop with the lame "let's change Bettman's name to something super-insulting" moves? "Betass?" Really? At least think of something witty or creative. Otherwise, say his name correctly, tell why he's a poor commissioner (which he is), and move on. And yes, as several others have said, I can understand this particular move. I don't like him, but he got this one right. -
My thesis is done. If anybody wants a copy, just PM me your email address.

Sheesh. Tough break for the Avs. They had to know that it's part of the package with Forsburgh, but the Wolski injury is really a blow. Not that I'm too sympathetic.
-
As longtime Wings fans, we should be able to sympathize with him more than most. That's tough.

Has VladdyIBelieve seen this thread yet? She might have to wear multiple GDTs to offset this superstitional trainwreck. Vladdy, if you're reading this, just breathe. Slowly, deeply. It'll be okay. Seriously, though, the Avs' forechecking and ability to hold the puck in our zone was a little scary at times yesterday, especially in the third period. It'll be a dogfight. They're pretty good. We're better, but the better team doesn't always win (and we should know that better than anyone).
-
Phew. We did not look good for much of the 2nd and 3rd, although we did just enough. Big props to Ozzie, though. And well-done to Franzenstein for his two goals. We need to be much better in Game 2, in my opinion; Colorado's forecheck was outstanding at times. But it's nice to get Game 1.

I've been craving a Wings-Avs playoff series for the last several years, but the Avs have managed to avoid us. They're close now, though, and I really hope it happens. I think we match up exceptionally well against them, and I miss hating them with every fiber of my being the way I did from 1996-02. Bring it.

*cough, cough* Still 9 NCs to 3 *cough, cough*

WQF Game 3 (4/14) GDT: Predators 5, Red Wings 3
Shockwave180 replied to aflac9262's topic in General
Ugh. I expected Nashville to win at least one game in this series, but the way we lost that game...I mean, we had the series essentially wrapped up, and then just gifted them a lifeline. Not the end of the world, though. -
Sorry, but all of you Wings fans who think the "You Suck" chants are classless or the sole territory of "rednecks" should watch a UM college hockey game at Yost Arena, or any other local college arena. That's where the chant originated, and Michigan (and many other college hockey fans) still use it regularly. Classy? Not really, but Nashville didn't invent it.

I hadn't paid any attention to this thread before (for obvious reasons), but what you ladies are doing is awesome. Keep up the spirit, go team, rah rah, and all that good stuff.
-
That was quite a different era, though. Less than half as many teams in the league, and nowhere near the same amount of parity that you've seen in the last decade or so. Winning back-to-back was a great achievement, although I'll always feel that those mid-to-late-90's teams should've won at least one more.

Jeez, man, every year Michigan finds new ways to break my heart, and sometimes it doesn't even involve football. At least the Wings won.
