No actually, teams have 30 days (or 10 games of regular season action) after a player clears waivers to assign them to the AHL, before having to expose them to waivers again, since it has not been 30 days, they can just assign him without having to send him through waivers again... If you'll remember, we did it several times with McCarty in 08 and he remained with the big club several times after clearing, and then had to be sent through again...

Maltby could actually play night in/night out on that squad on the 4th line and killing penalties, not to mention the leadership he would bring to that clubhouse... to be honest, I'm still surprised they didn't sign him as a FA, unless they contacted him and he expressed a desire to stay in Detroit, or retire (which I think may have been the case) Either way, good luck Ritola and TB!

However, how awesome would it be if they made a massive entertainment complex, with two arenas attached as one, sharing one wall and an atrium, but two separate actual arenas? Wings on the North Side of the structure, Pistons on the South, then you could (in theory) even have both teams playing home games on the same night... also could share parking, concessions, etc, while still having double luxury suites... now THAT would be amazing...

Well, a claim could have been made before the deadline and it just hasn't been reported yet, so we won't really be in the clear until around 3pm if nothing has been announced... this is a good sign though that no reports have come out yet...

First World Series appearance in 20 years and only one losing season in the last 5 years... don't get me wrong, with what they've spent, there should be more playoff appearances and they SHOULD be better, but lets not make it out to be worse than it is... with that said, I think Dombrowski is on the ropes and better put one hell of a team on the field next year or I think he's on the chopping block... I hate the idea of a dual-occupancy arena as well, but it is what it is I guess... with that said, I'm pretty sure they would hang them on opposite sides of the arena... there are simply too many Wings banners to share a side with the Pistons

I still don't care for the idea of a multi-purpose arena, as I think it affects the ice quality, but this all but ensures that this will be the case now, with that said, this new arena is going to be epic...

I have a bad feeling his career in the NHL is over now... sucks, he still has some good hockey in him I think... I bet he signs in the SEL in the next couple of weeks

Why the hell did they take him to Europe then? Just to make him hop a plane back to the US to gather his family?!? I hope Holland and Detroit offer him a 2-way contract and he agrees to go to GR as opposed to going overseas, but I think he is SEL bound :/

Because it was a 2-way deal, so no caphit for Detroit if he does retire AND maybe he genuinely thought he could win a job in camp, or at bare minimum, get claimed by another NHL team, but you have to have a contract in the first place for that to even be an option... as the old saying goes "keep your options open" How exactly would him signing a 2-way deal and then retiring be disrespectful by the way?

FYI - if the waiver was issued at noon like reported, we only have 2.5 hours to go... I really hope he clears and makes major strides in GR this year...

Ding. you also have to consider the fact that maybe Maltby just doesn't know if he wants to go to GR and is considering retirement... out of respect, you don't "waive" a guy while he's making this decision with his family... I think this is the more likely scenario, is that he told Kenny that he doesn't know what he wants to do yet, so they're giving him 24 hours (well, gave him 24 hours as they decision will come down today) to make his decision before he's waived or retires...

I agree to some extent, there are so only so many roster spots and Ritola may end up being a casualty to our embarrassment of riches, and if so, I wish him nothing but success on another team... with how deep we are on the current roster and the age our current crop of players are - there are really only going to be 3 spots available on forward in the next 3+ years or so and with the holes these players will be leaving, the 3 guys currently in our system that seem the most poised to fill these holes are Mursak, Tatar, Andersson, Emmerton and Nyquist, short of someone else coming up fast in our system and taking the brass by surprise and basically leaving them no choice but to give them a roster spot (Mitchell Callahan, Riley Sheahan, Francis Pare, etc...), the fact of the matter is that it might just end up being a "wrong place, wrong time" scenario for Ritola...

I gotta say, I thought the DocOc was pretty cool actually, but you can't beat an instant classic - The thought behind the TachMask, the tie in to the Detroit auto industry, the tribute to the greats to wear the Winged Wheel and the overall artistic excellence that went into that mask made it instantly one of my top 5 masks in NHL history in my mind... just look at it, I mean, come on!
