I think he proved with his play last season on a pretty bad Dallas team that the desire is still there... whether you like or dislike the signing, you can't argue that he is an asset, not a liability and will only make a team better on a 3rd line role.... keep in mind, he had 11 more pts than Miller in 21 less games last year... EDIT - As I said in another thread, IF Modano signs, I wouldn't mind the Wings swinging something like this: - Drew Miller to CBJ for Jared Boll - Derek Meech and Mattias Ritola to Boston for Mark Stuart (also gives Boston some MUCH needed cap relief and fills out roster spots on the cheap, plus a high prospect in Ritola) - Mike Modano signed via FA (lines arbitrary for formatting reasons) Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Tomas Holmstrom ($1.875m) Jiri Hudler ($2.875m) / Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Johan Franzen ($3.955m) Todd Bertuzzi ($1.938m) / Mike Modano ($1.000m) / Daniel Cleary ($2.800m) Justin Abdelkader ($1.000m) / Darren Helm ($1.000m) / Patrick Eaves ($0.750m) Jared Boll ($0.850m) Kris Draper ($1.583m) Nicklas Lidstrom ($6.200m) / Niklas Kronwall ($3.000m) Brad Stuart ($3.750m) / Brian Rafalski ($6.000m) Mark Stuart ($1.675m) / Jonathan Ericsson ($0.900m) Jakub Kindl ($0.883m) Jimmy Howard ($0.717m) / Chris Osgood ($1.417m) ROSTER: 22; CAP:$59.4m; CARRY-OVER PENALTY: $0.050m; PAYROLL: $58.975m; CAP ROOM: $0.300m; BONUSES: $0.000m WITH THAT SAID - I'd rather us take a flier on Modano and let the kids play (plus I really don't like the idea of giving up on Ritola without ever really giving him a chance) and maybe letting Miller go to add some nastiness, but otherwise, standing pat... at the same token, I wouldn't hate Modano coming here...

It wouldn't even have to be a package deal... if we signed Modano, I wouldn't mind seeing something like: - Drew Miller to CBJ for Jared Boll - Derek Meech and Mattias Ritola to Boston for Mark Stuart (also gives Boston some MUCH needed cap relief and fills out roster spots on the cheap) - Mike Modano signed via FA (lines arbitrary for formatting reasons) Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Tomas Holmstrom ($1.875m) Jiri Hudler ($2.875m) / Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Johan Franzen ($3.955m) Todd Bertuzzi ($1.938m) / Mike Modano ($1.000m) / Daniel Cleary ($2.800m) Justin Abdelkader ($1.000m) / Darren Helm ($1.000m) / Patrick Eaves ($0.750m) Jared Boll ($0.850m) Kris Draper ($1.583m) Nicklas Lidstrom ($6.200m) / Niklas Kronwall ($3.000m) Brad Stuart ($3.750m) / Brian Rafalski ($6.000m) Mark Stuart ($1.675m) / Jonathan Ericsson ($0.900m) Jakub Kindl ($0.883m) Jimmy Howard ($0.717m) / Chris Osgood ($1.417m) ROSTER: 22; CAP:$59.4m; CARRY-OVER PENALTY: $0.050m; PAYROLL: $58.975m; CAP ROOM: $0.300m; BONUSES: $0.000m WITH THAT SAID - I'd rather us take a flier on Modano and let the kids play, maybe letting Miller go to add some nastiness, but otherwise, standing pat... at the same token, I wouldn't hate Modano coming here.

If we're giving up Ritola as well, we better get a LOT more than just Boll in return... Miller for Boll straight up would be an even trade... Lets not overvalue Boll just because he'll drop the mitts, he'd be a nice addition here, but Ritola has a LOT of potential and shouldn't be written off as just being an extra piece, also keep in mind that he is only 23 and will only get better...
-
wow... never even considered that an option... I think it would be downright stupid to carry him as a 6/7th dman, when he could log major minutes in GR and REALLY develop into a top 2 guy - if we don't sign another veteran D man, I'm perfectly content with giving Janik a serious chance and rolling with it...
-
The long and the short of it, is that the arbitrator is going to award him at LEAST 2.5m a year - they can't even afford that, let alone higher... they are going to most likely lose Hjalmarsson AND Niemi when all is said and done...
-
hahahahahaha Burke has LOST HIS MIND... I can't believe that pylon got a raise!?!?!? and they're running Exelby out of town? :hysterical:
-
good riddance you f'in pylon!

I did the same at first - go back and delete your vote, that's what I did... As long as Patty Eaves is here for the long haul, I'm happy... you definitely can't argue that Modano gives you a much better chance to win NOW though... I'm willing to sacrifice losing Miller and Ritola for a one year deal on Modano as long as the brass still goes out and gets a mean SOB 4th liner and fills that D void In my perfect world(with what's left now) we sign Modano, then we re-up Meech and trade the rights to Meech, Miller and Ritola to Columbus for the rights to Boll and a pick/prospect(or 2), then sign Hnidy to fill out the D

read up on the CBA...
-
yea, minus that whole eating 1.375 of cap space for a player that isn't on the team - if he signs a 2 year, he better fulfill it...
-
same here - I REALLY want to know the terms, to get a better idea of what Eaves will get...

not only that, but I'm pretty sure we can offer him more than a stick of gum and a half eaten bag of Doritos and still stay under the... Chicago doesn't have that option... He wore 27 on the All-Star teams when 9 was taken, so I assume if he signed here, that's what he'd wear...
-
He wasn't even top 4 of mine going into FA, but with guys that were kinda pipe dreams in the first place (Boychuk, Vandermeer being bought out and coming here on the cheap) but, out of what's left and what's affordable, I agree 100% - I think he'd be a great fit - right handed shot too!
-
man... Chicago is screwed...

Holland thinks he is close to signing Eaves, Miller, and Meech
stevkrause replied to CenterIce's topic in General
The tipping points to me are that - A. Eaves has a canon of a shot and is a right handed shot at that B. Eaves has more of a mean streak I don't want to necessarily give up on Miller either and thought he played VERY well for us, but if we sign Modano, SOMEONE has to go, so it becomes a matter of if you want to give up on: Ritola (who we drafted and cultivated and hasn't even really been given a chance yet) or Miller... then if you go ahead and add that 4th line "tough guy" as well (as Holland has said he is looking to do) then it means you pretty much have to cut ties with both... -
EXACTLY.

I agree with everything you said, with the exception of one part - Eaves not being a core player - I think he needs to be locked up long term and hasn't even scratched the surface of what he's capable in the Winged Wheel... -

how are you going to reply to my post and COMPLETELY disregard the guts of the post???? Just because they're retained, does not mean they are going to be on the roster, or "taking up cap space" -
reading this seriously just got me choked up... still in disbelief...

It says quite a bit that neither was Brad May...

for the millionth time - RE-SIGNING MEECH IS ABOUT RETAINING ASSETS They WILL move him, or waive him, but why would you just let him go to UFA without qualifying him first to see if you can at least get something in return, before you just let him walk?!?! Keep things in perspective people... -
I guarantee they'll award him at least 2.5 million - say goodbye to at least another asset Chicago... and probably Hjalmarsson too... that Huet contract is REALLY screwing them by the day...
