Scarface Kill 'Em All Steve Yzerman GMR is born. A memorable year indeed.
-
I might have missed the disclaimer, but why is it titled "hockey history", when all these signings took place recently?
-
Home teams should wear white Road teams should wear dark No more vertical stripes on any jersey. No ads Make the Flyers and Hurricanes wear cooperalls.
-
I was. Wasn't everyone?
-
Hatcher signed the same day Selanne and Kariya signed with the Avalanche. I think Kariya signed a deal for like $10 per game just to win a Cup.
-
I was so excited when we got him. That was a bad break, though. He was a tough player to play against before the lockout.
-
What's the surprise? Yes, the top priority is building a great team in front of your goalie. I think Chicago could make deep runs in the playoffs with a Howard these last few years. Crawford isn't special. They score tons of goals. However, if you can't build a great team, you better get a goalie that can stand on his head in the postseason and steal games. Not an average goalie. Howard is an average goalie. I haven't seen him steal games consistently in the postseason. Mrazek stole playoff games for us last season. So no, Howard isn't good enough (with this roster). Nobody said we can win the Cup if only Howard played better. This defense has been s*** the last few seasons. Everyone knows that.
-
What if they put this guy on the cover next to Tayes? Or would the WWE sue EA sports for that?
-
Average goaltenders are good enough if there's a better team in front of them than what we have. But this is moot, as Howard was outplayed by Mrazek. If Mrazek sucked all year, Howard wouldn't have gotten as much hate. But this was a case where a better goalie was ready to come out. And before you go there, yes we lost in the first round with Mrazek. We wouldn't have likely won a game against Tampa with Howard in net. We just need to build a better team. Sadly, we won't have a team like LA or Chicago where you can win with pedestrian goaltending (Quick was average in the 2014 Cup run).
-
It's a combination of both things. But Mrazek outplayed Howard as the year went on, so of course I wanted the change. Who didn't around here?
-
I was thinking of this guy recently, but how about Martin Lapointe? He had his best season in 2001, and then Boston signed him and he ended up doing nothing of note for them. Got worse every year.

If we had a great roster in front of him, Howard could continue to be average, and we'd advance through the playoffs. But we haven't had a great roster in a while, so we've needed something a bit better in net if we wanted to progress. We didn't get it from him. But if we're strictly talking about building teams, I'd go for a defenseman, then centerman and then a goalie. As I said, there's a lot of capable goalies nowadays that could win with a top roster in front of them. It's easy to develop goalies, but building a team around them isn't so easy with the cap. Those teams are behind the times. So is a team like New York and Montreal. They have the two best goalies in the league, but their rosters come up short in the playoffs. If they had a slightly better roster at the expense of spending a little less on their goalies, they could make a deeper playoff run.

Isn't Jody Shelley retired? As for Hextall, no way he should be listed ahead of Lindros. Giroux being listed ahead of Lindros is a joke also. Buccigross must have something against Lindros to list a modern day player who's not even as good as Lindros was in his prime. Or was he merely projecting into the future?
-
No one needs to be available. Teams can develop these guys in the minors. We did. So have numerous other teams.
-
Point is, you don't need an elite HOF #1 anymore. Goalie is the most important and easiest to find position right now in hockey with lots of solid goalies. They're just so well schooled nowadays and wear such giant pads. Finding a #1 goalie would be a priority, but not the first priority with how much there is to choose from.
-
Not in today's league. Most teams have backup goalies good enough to win a Cup if the right roster is in front of them. 15 years ago, you needed a Roy, Hasek, Brodeur or Belfour type name to win the Cup. Not anymore.
-
Depends on the makeup of the team. This is the boring answer, but there's no right answer. In today's league, I'd take a top defenseman. Back in the higher scoring eras, I'd take a top center that can put up monster numbers.

Here's what I learned from Buccigross's list 1. His list wasn't that much different than mine. 2. Eddie Shore is a mythical person who never actually played in the NHL. Much like a Paul Bunyan type. 3. Too many modern players. Grioux, Kopitar, Kane (rape), Tayes, Pavelski, Benn, Tavares? Over guys like Lindros, Robitaille, Hall, Pilote (not the guy that traded Jesus), Nolan and Billy Smith? 4. My list included GM's and coaches. You have to put Trotz on Nashville's mountain or Lamoriello on Jersey's. They're forever linked with those franchises. 5. The Rangers did not exist prior to 1994. I stated as such in my thread. 6. The only debate on the Red Wings would be Lindsay or Sawchuk. I put in Lindsay. As stated, he's lived longer and is still an ambassador for the team. I think he's more remembered as a Wing. What about Ted Lindsay?

I did my own thread on this several years back. Would be interesting to see the comparisons. http://www.letsgowings.com/forums/topic/75085-each-nhl-teams-mount-rushmore/

Robbie Russo sounds like the name of a 90's wrestling jobber.

I wonder how Moe Greene would feel about a hockey team in Vegas?

Non-Wings You've Grown to Like

I don't see it. Kharlamov was a much better skater and better goal scorer. He was actually smaller than Datsyuk as well. Also, he played as a winger. Their biggest similarity is they were Russian and could both handle the puck like almost nobody else in their eras. It's a shame he, Tretiak and Fetisov never got to play their primes in the NHL. Fetisov is the only one of those three that played in the league at all. -
Imagine the partying the team would do after games.

Not sure if you're Canadian, but I'm guessing a lot of Canadians would feel this way. They hated him during the Summit Series because he was the USSR's best player, but they respected his unique skill and grew to like him over time. Dying at an early age also helped his myth. No secret why he was the first Russian skater in the HHOF. -
What a terrible cover to begin with. A team not many people outside of their idiot city like, with two d-bags holding the Cup. I wouldn't buy the game for that reason alone. Neither would a lot of people who hate the Blackhawks. The NHL just can't market s*** right.
