Answer me this. If fighting is pointless and is only for fun, why have enforcers ever existed in NHL history? Did coaches and GM's dress these players just to sell tickets and get their rocks off? Or did they believe that these players were necessary to protect the stars or necessary for some other purpose?

The wrong guy wins it every year. But seriously, there is no right or wrong in these enforcer debates. There's good arguments on both sides. Teams have dressed enforcers for decades, knowing the roster spot could go to a more talented player instead. I doubt all GM's and coaches were stupid. I doubt the Wings didn't have a guy more talented than Grimson to dress in 1995. So there is a place in the game for enforcers nowadays like there was in the past. Not like there's only 3 lines being used now instead of the 4 that were used in the past. The other argument about how hockey exists in other countries without fighting, and how concussions result in suicide and brain injuries is also a good one.

But he can't hit or fight and he doesn't play hockey well enough to play on a higher line. McGrattan does his role better than Andersson does his (whatever Andersson's role is) And while we're on this topic, I don't see anything wrong with Ericsson fighting. Yeah, he can get hurt, but there are better D-men than him who occasionally drop the gloves. He did the right thing stepping in. I wish more of our players would do that.
