I wouldn't have traded the first for either of those players. Since we're going to likely finish 4-6, our first round pick would have been higher than where it would have been at the deadline.

What if Detroit plays Dallas at some point later in the playoffs (not the first round), who will have home ice in that series? I believe it would be Dallas, but I'm not sure. If that's so, it would be ridiculous indeed. But this isn't just a hockey problem. In the NFL, you often have 8-8 teams winning a division and getting a home game over a team with 3 or 4 more wins. Likewise, some 10-6 teams winds up missing out on the playoffs altogether. Going back to the NHL, you sometimes have another issue, where the 8 seed in one Conference has a lot fewer points than the 9-11 seeds in the other Conference, who end up missing the playoffs altogether. That also seems unfair.

Then go root for the Pens, if you want to cheer for a team that will win Cups for you.

Tough to say. Early playoff exits are disappointing. At the same time, making it to the Finals and losing is a terrible feeling as well. Expectations tend to change as the playoffs go on.

Don't forget, Holland has been totally unwilling to produce any kind of shakeup to a lineup that got bounced from the second round of the playoffs two years in a row. In 2010, we were a 5 seed, last season a 3 seed and this season likely a 5th/6th seed. Before that, the Wings were either first or second in the Conference seemingly every year for a decade. It was tremendous success that likely did spoil us, but the GM should have planned for some changes after the last two seasons. Instead, he sat on his arse during the deadline and ordered Pizza on the phone. It was pretty obvious the complacency and accountability on this team had to be addressed with some kind of shakeup or spark. Not saying we should have traded Pavel or Z, but something should have been done. It wasn't.
