That's a good comparison between Gretzky vs. Lemieux. I don't think it works in this debate. Lidstrom was great for a long time, but Orr was better than great. His numbers during his shortened career are spectacular. He dominated the game like no other defenseman ever has. He finished top 3 in points in six different seasons. He led the league in assists five separate times. There's a reason people overlook the longevity argument when comparing Orr to Lidstrom or Harvey. At the same time, the longevity argument does hurt Orr against Gretzky (for some reason, not against Lemieux though).
-
Did Orr play in a high scoring era? I know the 80's had a lot of scoring, but Orr didn't play then. I can't imagine the 70's had more scoring than the early 90's, when Lidstrom came into the league.
-
Coffey is not on Harvey's level. Doug Harvey also revolutionized the game. Maybe even more than Orr did. Also, what about Eddie Shore? I know it's difficult to compare players across eras, but I doubt if I'd put Coffey in the top 10. I have guys like MacInnis, Robinson, Potvin, Shore, and Chelios all ranked ahead of him. Probably Fetisov too. If we're looking at longevity, then Scott Niedermayer should be ranked ahead of Orr too. You can't just look at longevity when ranking players like Lemieux or Bobby Orr. These guys didn't play long careers, but played long enough to make a huge impact.

It's interesting how two of the Wings' Cup wins in the 50's came in OT goals in game 7. That might be the only time the Cup was ever decided in overtime in a game 7, and the Wings did it twice. Fine line between being a dynasty and just being good.

This isn't even close. Orr is likely the second best hockey player of all-time and a player who changed the game. One of only a few generational talents in hockey history. One of the most important athletes in sports history. You rank Doug Harvey behind Paul "I'm not a forward" Coffey? All of us here are Wings fans. That's not a good excuse for picking Lidstrom. This isn't a poll asking about who you like more. You could argue that his last Norris trophy and the one in 2003 should have gone to someone else (especially 2003). It all evens out.

I wish Holland would bust out some Shakespeare and say, "Nothing is but what is not" -

I for one would have signed Ericsson to a large contract with a NTC, trade a 1st round pick for Kyle Quincey, give Abdelkader a big contract with a NTC........................oh wait nevermind. -
Percent chance of Playoffs or Potential High Pick
GMRwings1983 replied to AtlantaHotWings's topic in General
Worked for the Penguins in the mid 80's, though unfortunately, there's no Mario Lemieux or even an Auston Matthews coming in the draft in 2017. Still, the one positive will be to finally get a high draft pick. People always point out how you can't build a team on low draft picks alone. There's a lot of truth in that. -
Amazing that neither the Oilers in the 80's nor the Canadiens on any of their great teams won more than 17 straight. The 1993 Penguins are one of the best teams ever. In this day and age, no team should win 17 straight. Then again, we do have OT and shootouts now, so maybe that cheapens it somewhat. They have three wins during this stretch in those "gimmick" situations.

My New Year's resolution is to score more often than Riley Sheahan.

These players are letting Blashill down. Poor guy spent his entire childhood dreaming of coaching his hometown team, only to inherit a roster full of jobbers and untalented AHL scrubs.
-
I wouldn't want any of those players if I were an opposing GM. Mrazek may have the highest potential, but he's been trash this season and goalies are a dime a dozen these days. Agree with you on the salary issue. That's on Kenny Holland. Hard to blame the players or their agents for agreeing to overpayments.

When did he say this? I started a thread several years ago where I polled people about Holland's favorite quote, and that wasn't one of the options. Here's the thread, BTW. http://www.letsgowings.com/forums/topic/76584-favorite-ken-holland-catchphrase-quote/ -

Yep. The league doesn't care, though. They should have put both outdoor games on tomorrow. I'm a Chiefs fan, so I'm turning the channel as soon as that game begins. -

Syl Apps is probably the best Leaf ever. What a joke ranking him at #99. LOL. Please tell me this list is not ranked. Otherwise, Beliveau should have made the top 90. -

Won't be able to watch much of this game. The NHL made a mistake putting it on the same day as the finale of the NFL regular season. -
Or he could be partying every other year when the Hawks win the Cup. I'm guessing Bowman must touch the Stanley Cup ever year.
-
Imagine how many 20 year reunions Bowman has done with all the various dynasties he's won Cups.

Poor Larkin and AA. Imagine having Glendenning, Sheahan, Ott and Miller as your linemates. I'd ask for a trade if I were them.
