There is no unanimous definition, but I call a guy like Downey a heavyweight. I also think McCarty was a heavy up until he went to Calgary, where he started to lose to lesser fighters. A heavyweight is a guy that regularly fights with heavies and can hold his own. For instance, Stortini fights a lot with heavies, but the guy is a punching bag. Cote is probably the same way, although he's better than Stortini. A guy like Boll or Clarkson in New Jersey are guys who are not heavies. Also, a heavy doesn't necessarily have to be a big guy. For instance, Tie Domi and Rob Ray were heavyweights. They could beat anybody on a given night. So it's not some traditional boxing definition of a heavyweight, but that's what I think it is. BTW, the answer to my trivia question is no team I can think of. But go ahead and search.

Just a guy who's job is to be physical and to stand up for teammates when need be. He also has to be a heavy or a guy that fights regularly with heavies. For instance, McCarty wasn't a top heavy, but still a heavy nonetheless.

McCarty was an enforcer, although he tallied off towards the end of his career. Enforcer doesn't mean he has to be one of the 10 best fighters in the league, it just means he has to be a guy who can go with heavies and that's what McCarty did quite a few times in his career. To define it differently, would mean there's only a handful of enforcers in the league. That's not how I see it.

I don't think this team can challenge that definition much. Kopecky doesn't qualify, if that helps any.
-
Why? Who does this blackout?

Great news if this is true. However, I thought the NHL network did broadcast some games last year? I could be wrong, however. Anyway, the last time I checked my tv schedule guide, it didn't look like the NHL network would show any games from any series.

As far as I remember, games 1, 5 and 7 will be on Versus. So yes, tommorow's game should be on Versus.

Blue Jackets doing their homework for Wings -- literally

You forgot Kopecky. -
Trivia time. Name me the last team to win the Stanley Cup, who dressed an enforcer for less than 10 games combined in the regular season and playoffs?
-
What the author of this article downplayed was that fighting is way up in hockey from last season. Also, our regular season success has nothing to do with the fact that we don't fight. Last year we fought more often than previous seasons and still had a good regular season. Likewise, I'm sure that if we averaged around 40 total fights a year from several players combined, we'd still be just as good. Also, Holland's comment makes no sense. It is possible to beat your team and beat them up, just not from this current team. Many teams have done so in the past, most recently Anaheim in this so-called "new NHL where no one fights anymore."
-
We have for like the past 10 seasons or so. That seems like consistency to me, which would warrant the expectation that it will happen again, especially coming off a Cup run and a good regular season finish in the standings. One thing can be expected, though. Namely that the Penguins will get favorable treatment every season on the TV.

When Mason watches Sammy's tape, he will probably be roaring with laughter at the guy's shooting accuracy. -
Just do what I'll be doing the whole series. Blaming Bettman and his adopted son Crosby for having to miss most of the series. Also, it wouldn't hurt if atdhe was still around and working well. That one is also on Bettman. Exactly. We've always gotten good coverage in the past. It's like the league all of a sudden decided to cut out the Wings from their schedule. I know Columbus isn't a big market, but neither is Nashville, and yet all our games against them were televised last year. Also, the other original 6 teams likewise got hosed by this deal. Hardly any of their games are televised on Versus, either.
-
They better show the whole damn game, considering how it's the only game out of the first 4 that they will show.
-
I have a feeling that Sammy is going to light Malhotra up. He's been saving his fists for the playoffs all this time.
-
The funny thing is that the league has not been shy in the past about showing lots of Wings games in the playoffs. Coming off a Cup win, I thought that we'd definitely get just about all the 1st round games televised. But I guess we're finding out more and more where the league's allegiances lie. I bet if the Pens were playing the Florida Panthers in the 1st round, the same thing would still happen. I'm just hoping for some good online streams right now.
-
It's one thing to showcase a guy, but it's another to serve him to us anally. They get all 7 games on Versus. Geez, the league could at least try to look unbiased here. They should be showcasing the most popular team and the defending champs (who beat Crosby in the Finals BTW). Like I've said all day, Pittsburgh doesn't have the kind of fan support outside their city as the Wings do. The Wings = ratings. Bettman should rot in hell for this.

A four game playoff series. I suppose if it's tied 2-2, both teams get eliminated since no one stands out. I just hope everyone going to their games isn't this stupid. At least there's one thing they can learn to say, which divealanche fans still say at any random event. "Red Wings Suck"
-
Yeah, but you can't say the same about the Philadelphia/Pittsburgh series. Funny how there's five original 6 teams in the playoffs, and yet Pittsburgh is going to get more Versus games than all of them combined. That's Bettman and the NHL for you.

FSN Detroit to Televise Entire First Round
GMRwings1983 replied to HockeytownRules19's topic in General
Right about now I wish I lived near Detroit, s***ty economy and all. -
Especially from the league's most marketable and most famous team, not to mention the defending champs. How many of these other teams have such huge fanbases outside of their metro area?
-
That's what I've been saying all day. The Pens don't even have fans outside of their city, and yet all their games are televised. I guess the team that finished 2nd last season gets more respect than the team that won the Cup. The league needs to get over this Crosby obsession. Televising all of their games, and only a few from other more important series' is too much of a discrepancy. I hate Bettman and his cronies so much.
-
As I said earlier, I wish this happened last year as opposed to this year, because last year the Wings playoffs games were streamed, and in pretty good quality no less. I used them whenever the reception went off during storms. This year atdhe isn't the same as it was before, thus I'll have to exclusively rely on streaming, with the s***ty possibility that the stream will freeze up in OT or something like that. I blame this all on Bettman and him putting his baby Penguins all over TV so he can wack it to his boy Crosby.
-
I hope it's all the Wings games that aren't on Versus. Realistically, it'll probably be any of the Canadian teams.
