WCSF Game 1 GDT: Red Wings 4, Avalanche 3

We can't sit back so much, unless we want another OT like we were forced to go to with Nashville.

In their case, the misconceptions wouldn't apply.

Hopefully, he'll break his neck one day teaching him that trade.

    ******* divealanche!

He's an enforcer. He must have high PIM totals.

I guess you replaced that picture of Scott Parker on your avatar with a better face to look at.

It's the same as Arnott's goal on Hasek, and Hasek was crucified on LGW, although fairly, for it. I'm not going to cut Ozzie any more slack. He has to stop that.

That goal deflated the Wings as much as spark the divealanche. I know we were still up 2, but when your goalie gives up goals like that, it makes the players wander what else will happen.

Ozzie finished the period well, but none of this would have happened if he hadn't given up that soft goal. I'd like to think that when we score 4 goals, we shouldn't have to battle hard to win the game.

    Pang: Avs in 6

Panger is like Brutus. I never expected him to stab us too. I always thought he was a Wings fan.

    Pang: Avs in 6

I can't believe nobody is picking us to win. We're not playing some big, physical team that we usually struggle against. We're playing against a team that essentially plays the same style of hockey as us, except they're not as good at it. Oh well, I'd love for us to sweep this series, to see the look on the experts faces then.

[quote name='egroen' date='April 24, 2008 - 02:50PM' post='1328794' ... But you would put Yzerman in the top ten??? Is that just for centers? Forwards? Or for all hockey players??? All-time, all-positions I would have them both in the Top 30-40. Yzerman is in my top 10 all time skaters. I used to include goalies, but that just complicates the list. Sakic would be right outside that list.

Why would Sakic be better than Yzerman? Sakic never scored 60 goals, and never scored over 150 points in a season. Yzerman at his prime was better offensively than Sakic at his prime, and will go down as a better captain, and a more popular player in league history, which believe it or not, does make a difference in people's minds as far as all-time ranking. Sakic has been great in recent years, but that has to do with him mostly staying healthy (until this year) thus he didn't have the lingering injury problems that Yzerman had. The most impressive thing Sakic has ever done is his OT goals in the playoffs, but Howe, Lemieux, and Messier never had one OT playoff goal, and I don't think anyone will rank Sakic ahead of those guys. I have Sakic in my top 20, but Yzerman would just barely make it in my top 10. I don't see how anyone who isn't a divealanche fan can say otherwise.

But him competing against Roy and Brodeur has to be overshadowed by the fact that those guys had other stars on their teams, and he didn't. That weighs heavily in the voters minds as far as who was more valuable to their team.

Yeah, but the fact that they played with other great players still holds true, because the scoring tended to be more balanced. Gretzky and Lemieux were just too damn good, no matter who they played with. Hasek, on the other hand, played with a team that didn't score many goals, and who had no other superstars of any kind, or even all-star caliber players towards his later years in Buffalo. Of course he was going to win all the MVP awards and Vezina trophies because of that image of carrying a team all by himself. I'm not saying he isn't great, but it's too much to say that he was better than two great players who didn't even play the same position as him, just because of his hardware. Also, he won more Vezinas than Roy, so would you say that Hasek is better than Roy was just because of individual awards?

Respect for the Red Wings and their fans

Sakic and Yzerman had a hard time winning trophies because they played with other great players, and also, they had to compete against Gretzky and Lemiux for those scoring trophies. Hasek was the only star on his team, thus anything he did was more magnified as far as importance goes.

What makes Hasek better overall than either Sakic or Yzerman? It's impossible to compare goalies to skaters as far as overall ability goes. What exactly makes a great overall goalie? I don't know the answer, but it probably wouldn't be Hasek, since he does so many strange things out there on the ice. If you're just looking at accomplishments, then is Hasek better than Yzerman and Sakic just because he won more harware? Once again, it's hard to compare, since they weren't battling for the same awards, necessarily.

NHL cuts Refs for round two.

I hope the refs aren't scared to whistle Floppa for diving each time that he does it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. It's like the Jets and Sharks in Westside Story. I don't believe Wings fans and Avs fans should be nice to each other. It somehow doesn't feel right.

    Let the games begin!

In my mind, if the Wings win every game that way against the divealanche, then that makes a great series.

    Datsyuk Nominated for Lady Byng

Andrew Peters should have been nominated, since he made a transformation from being an enforcer, to being a sissy.

    Don Cherry on Wings/Preds

You're welcome! By the way, you can call me GMR.

Stuart may miss start of Round 2

I wonder if people would be so understanding of this decision, if it wasn't Stuart but Lidstrom instead, who was taking time off to be with his family in this playoff series? Somehow, I doubt people here would react the same in that situation.

    Any update on maltby?

I'm also mad at him not playing. I'd love to see the Grind Line back together, and see Helm, Drake and Cleary all play on the 4th line. But, Babcock will be damned before he benches Sammy.

    Don Cherry on Wings/Preds

Nah, that's different. Picking on a city is not the same as picking on a race or a nationality. The latter is seen a lot more often and is a lot less acceptable, while the former is just my own thing, and is equivalent to people from Boston not liking New Yorkers. By the way, I'm flattered how you follow me around looking for ways to criticize my thinking. The previous poster actually called me a Liberal, which made me chuckle. You guys are really hooked on this Don Cherry, I can tell.
