The Central is better than it was in the past, but the Wings are still the only legit cup contender in the division. What hurts the most is losing to the Blackhawks and Blues, which are teams that all Wings fans hate. But I guess the losses have to come from somewhere, I'm just surprised that the Central is the division where those losses are coming from.

Best coach since Bowman? Is that saying much considering that we had only 1 coach in between the two?

I don't have anything against McGrattan, but I seriously doubt that Brashear is afraid of him or is dodging him. That's just the way Brashear is, and that's why so many hate him for his antics. I'd still put him above a guy like McGrattan. And what's wrong with Neil fighting instead? He talks a mean game, so he shouldn't complain when he's forced to back it up. This isn't basketball after all.

That sounds just like Cory Cross and Kyle Calder to me.

Avery never fights heavyweights, but I bet if we kept Avery, Holland would be tempted to sign a heavyweight just to protect other players on the team who would be run at due to Avery's antics.

I hated Drake for many years when he was running at Wings players from behind. I was angry when we signed him this summer, and still am angry, because he hasn't given out the cheapshots that I expected him to give out now that he's on the Wings. We might as well put another enforcer into that spot, because he's contributing nothing offensively. And we don't need his penalty killing, because we have enough of that as it is. It's too bad Downey's going to be the one scratched when Hank and Malts come back.

I haven't seen that fight in a while. Laus was a monster with that right hand. I remember he decked Berube the same way also. It's too bad his career ended too early much like Belanger's, but most fighters' careers do end too early.

Unless Lilja's the one making the takedowns. Then it's a clear win and not a draw. -
Was Babs pumping up Sammys image for a reason?
GMRwings1983 replied to YoungGuns1340's topic in General
As I posted last week, Sammy's biggest problem is the fact that he scored 20 goals his 1st season here, and that he's the only right handed forward we have who's expected to score. Now that I think about it, I wonder if Sammy would be as hated by Wings fans if he was a left-handed shot? It might be irrelevant, but for some reason I think it does actually make a difference that he's one the few right-handed shots we have, so more is expected from him. -
You had Gillies on your list (which I agree with), but he hardly ever dropped the gloves either. Not that many people wanted to fight those guys because of their reputation. Remember how Twist could barely hit 100 PIM's each year because he didn't have many takers. It's true that Gillies, Wilson, or Playfair would have more losses if they fought more often, but they'd still dominate most of the fights. They were that good.

Well, I'm always either overly dramatic about an issue or I don't care about it, so I'm not surprised if it sounded that way. -

Is it? It's one thing if he shoots too much and makes meaningless plays offensively, but when he starts turining the puck over like that, it reminds me of Lilja's turnover to Selanne. I don't want the Wings to lose again in the playoffs due to mistakes like that. -
What do you guys think? Any chance that Laraque and Peters fight in the snow today? I know Bettman doesn't want it to happen for this huge nationally televised game, but I'd love to see it.

Sammy played horrible last night just like everyone else. The thing that made him stand out from everyone was that beautiful backhanded pass right to a blues player that led to the scoring chance. He's a f***up plain and simple. -
Not a bad list. You must be a McSorley fan, cause I've never seen anyone rank him so high. He was a great fighter, but never one of my favorites. Also, how can you omit Wilson or Playfair? Those guys hardly ever lost even though they fought in the toughest era of fighting in the NHL.

Puckloo, it's all Dom's fault. If he didn't give up that goal, we would have had overtime and a shootout to win the game. Everyone in their right mind knows that Osgood wouldn't have given up that goal. Just kidding. I'm trying to give you a hard time. Have a happy new year.

Looks like the team was thinking more about New Years Eve than playing the damn game. I guess we should have expected a letdown after that dominant road trip. The guys probably figured they wouldn't even have to show up to win this game even without Hank and Homer in the lineup. Other than Hudler's mini-breakout, I'm hard pressed to find another great scoring chance this game. Pathetic effort against a divison opponent we had to shut up.

Looks like the Wings have taken advantage this season of beating up on weak opponents. Only this time the weak opponents consist of the Pacific, Northwest, Southeast, and Northeast divisions. I guess those ******* idiot blues fans are going to come to this forum tomorrow to tell us about how great and dominant their team is. That's the worst part about losing to them.

I might be biased, but it looked like Walker turtled somewhat as soon as he had his head down, and went down too easily to avoid getting hit by Downey. I have to call it a draw the way it looked.
-
Pretty much the same reason I hate him. Legace can kiss my ass.
-
I guess most of that list would come from the 80's Wings teams. I don't know much about Wings fighters back in the 60's and 70's except I always hear about how Gordie Howe was feared by others, so I'd have to go on pure rep. Obviously Probert, Kocur, Grimson, Gallant, Polonich, etc., would be at the top of the list, with Mac And Shanny in there somewhere. I can't think of any others right off the top of my head just now.

Downey and Walker are an even match, but I don't see him being able to beat King. That might be a job for the "PAIN TRAIN". It'd be nice if we had more muscle, but we all know what a hard and long struggle it was for many years just to get a guy like Downey into the lineup. -
Those guys you mentioned had their careers ended by injury, excpet for Tucker who is still playing. Samsonov hasn't retired yet. The point is that the best players always played well through pain. Yeah, their numbers might tail off a bit, but in Samsonov's case he has shown that he cannot play through pain, and his numbers have disappeared. He's going to have to battle through it, or else retire.

It'd be worth a try, but an overall top 10 would still be more interesting. Since, McCarty and Shanny got here, there wouldn't be any other Wing to put on this list.

Hey, that's not a bad idea. Lilja closes out his year of dominance with a brutal, bloody KO on Tkachuk.
