I don't even know why anyone gives credit to Gary Bettman for the game growing. It has always been big in Canada, and Gary takes away the Jets and Nordiques in the mid 90's when Canada's dollar was struggling. Colorado is a successful organization and a team belongs there, but Phoenix has not made a cent profit since they moved there. The sunbelt expansion is, was, and will always be remembered as a failure. Most of those teams are the reason that there is a lockout because they make no money. The Canadian dollar is on par with the US dollar now and the US economy is not at it's best unfortunately so maybe it's time for teams like the Coyotes and Panthers to move for the good of the league. At the end of the day, the only reason that the salary cap has to go down with a 50/50 split is because of the bottom 5 or so teams in the NHL that are basically bankrupt. Move the Coyotes, Panthers and Devils to Seattle, Quebec and Markham and the cap doesn't move with a 50/50 split by the end of a season when the NHL goes from 3.3 billion profit to 4 billion.

The Wild's GM signed those essentially knowing that his owner was going to back a lockout and have their contracts groomed in the process of a new CBA. If you don't want to pay the guys big $$$ then don't sign 2 guys for 13 years a piece at 7.5 mil average cap hit. That's why Kovi and Ovechkin don't want to come back. They signed for their whole career with their clubs and now will have to give probably 2 mil back per year.....geez, that's fair lol. Pretty sure the max player salary in the CFL is $1 mil....and that's a bushleague for the NFL. NHL has a much larger fanbase and can afford to pay their players more than that. I understand wanting ticket prices to go down, but if people want it to be a 50/50 deal comparable to the other major sports, then NHL players will all go to Europe if your idea even got a sniff.

I'll jump on the 50/50 bandwagon, but here's the catch: 1. 50/50 effective immediately. 2. Cap is set accordingly with a rollback to get teams compliant with the cap and what 50% actually is. 3. "Make whole" is given a new meaning where contracts that are signed are honoured and essentially becomes a buyout of the amount that gets shaved off the players contract with the "rollback". Example: If the cap goes down 12% and you have Datsyuk making $6.7 mil for the next 2 seasons for a total of 13.4 mil, his buyout of 12% to get to the 50/50 while honouring signed contracts is $1.608 mil, thus Datsyuk is "made whole" The players are made whole on the contracts they signed for an exact dollar amount and "made whole". The "8 poor owners" get their 50/50 on the cap, but they learn a valuable lesson with throwing money around that they keep whining that they don't have.

The NHL definitely can support 30 franchises, they just need to be in hockey locations. Make the following relocations: Phoenix --> Quebec (instant rivalry with Habs) Islanders --> Brooklyn (rumoured) Devils --> Seattle (instant rivalry with Canucks) Florida --> Saskatoon (the city itself and surrounding areas could support a team...the Jets are sold out for 5 years with a comparable population I believe) Not sure what other teams are horribly cash strapped, but Hamilton, Ontario and Markham, Ontario could support teams and they would both be top 10 profit margin in the league.

Exactly this. And the Wings have 4 Stanley Cups since 1997....so who really give a flying f**k what the past 2 champs had. Wings won it in 2008 with Lidstrom the chessmaster as captain, not a hard hitter like Dustin Brown or Zdeno Chara. Wings win the cup by skill and outplaying/outsmarting their opponent. Also, with Nyquist and Brunner being added to the lineup, the Wings identity pretty much stays the same. Smith will no doubt destroy a few guys, but the status quo is there with the Wings, and it will stay. At least until they miss the playoffs, which I don't see happening any time soon. Makes sense. I just like the thought of a super line of Lemieux - Yzerman - Gretzky. As a centrement myself, I always pride myself on a solid 2-way game, so my first logic isn't just to outscore the other team as Gretzky did with relative ease, but to take the puck from the other team and shove it back in their face, and that's what Yzerman did better than anyone, as does Datsyuk. But you raise a good point and I agree with you.

Yzerman's last 2 years kept him from being 2nd overall along with the fact that Howe and Messier as well as Francis played 150-200 more career games than Yzerman. Another thing, Demers was the one that turned Yzerman into a 2-way centre. Bowman took over and had the 1991 draft done and a team that got stacked with Lids, Federov, Konstantinov and then had the Grind Line and Shanny added along with Larionov and Fetisov. That team was a raging hard-on that just needed the right system. The same thing he did when he had the Penguins back to back championships with the likes of Lemieux, Jagr, Francis, Coffey, Barasso, Stevens and so on. They just needed organization to win the cup. And I'd put Yzerman ahead of Lemieux on the all time list at centre in a heartbeat, as well as Gretzky. Centres need to be responsible on both sides and Yzerman was far superior to Lemieux and Gretzky in every way but point totals. I'd sooner put those 2 on Yzerman's wing and make a super line and have Sakic as my 2nd line centre who was the closest comparison as stated by someone else above for Stevie Y.

First off, I will never vote against Yzerman. Yzerman and Lidstrom will go down as possibly the 2 best Wings ever. Howe, Dats, Federov....up there, but those 2 are THE best. It's hard to vote between the 2 cause of the forward/defence difference. So I will say this. Yzerman brought the Wings from the obscurity of the Dead Wings era and made them competitive. When Lids came along with Federov and Konstantinov, the Wings became a powerhouse. Yzerman got the Wings out of the trash, Lids kept them there. If I could vote for both I would. I call it a tie.

That's exactly what i was thinking when i saw the poll cause Brunner can bulge the twine. I hope this deal gets done soon so we can see him and Z in the NHL together. what was it...1 goal, 2 assists for Z and 2 goals for Brunner? Hope the chemistry gets built up and it carries to the Wings.

On a serious note, the only thing that grinds my gears about the line shuffling is that Dats and Z still only get to play together like 4 games a year when not on the PP together. Hopefully the additions of Brunner and Nyquist make it so Dats and Z can play on the top line with Mule or Nyquist and Flip can centre the 2nd Pair with Gus or Brunner on the line. More threats offensively now and younger legs....lets get the Eurotwins back together!

That salary cap stuff the way the proposal drew it up is confusing as all hell. I'll just wait on the sidelines with that one until they give us a number and start playing. No more trying to figure it out. As for the possible 5 game weeks....playoffs should be fast paced and exciting when everyone's got their own oxygen tank on the bench Either way, change a few things in the NHL's proposal and drop the puck! Good question, cause the NHL's growth hit the wall as soon as Buttman started spouting about another lockout and then did just that. The non die hard fans are abandoning ship and it'll take more than adding shootouts to the NHL to lure them back again.

There will definitely be some counter points. The 50/50 split sounds nice if the cap wasn't already set at 70.2 mil and how do you be cap compliant without the rollback? Lets break this down. Revenues = $3.303 billion divide by 30 is $110.1 million per team divide 50/50 split gets % 55.05 million is what the cap would be set at. that's a 15 million dollar drop in cap. 55 million divided by 70 million = .7857 So in the end, the revenue gets dropped by 7% overall, but the players salaries would be reduced with the cap by approx 21%, but without the rollback, just some make whole jargen. Slightly less than the 24% last time. The now expired CBA was drafted and force fed by the owners and the players reluctantly accepted it after losing a season. All the crap they're saying about "escrow" and "make whole" will get us back to where we're at now in 6 years cause the 7th won't be agreed upon cause the owners will want more money back again. If there's a 50/50 split, the the only way the game will continue to grow and have the cap go up is if there's relocation of numerous teams. With the amount of fans that said they're not gonna return to the NHL, all the growth of the past 6 years crash landed and the revenues and merch sales this year will take a massive hit and there may be more teams to add to the list for relocation along with Phoenix, NYI and New Jersey, who already have a terrible fan base. The players just want the contracts they signed honoured and the owners have a problem with it. The owners and their GM's are the ones that keep offering players 8-20 year contracts and then come back and say they want the max to be 5 years. The hypocrisy is amazing with this lockout. end rant
