Has anyone read or seen anything regarding the Wings' Alternate Captains this year? Last year we had the Alternates rotating between Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Draper, is that continuing? And, does anyone know if there was any sort of logic or order to how they rotated last year? It seemed completely random to me. I tried to see if one guy wore it on the road and others wore the A at home, but that didn't hold up because I saw all three of them have it home and away at different times. Any ideas or info?

The red versions came out about the beginning to middle of August. I think they're pretty sharp. Not authentic as to what the players wore obviously, but better suited to the Wings as they're red... go figure.

I would've bet cold money that this was going to read; Maltby deserves to be ..... traded Pretty much how I feel.

For all of the people that just HATE on Sammy, you've obviously forgotten about such notable Red Wings as Boyd the Void, Stacey Roest, Brent Gilchrist, Darryl Laplante, Ray Whitney... those were guys who were absolute waste of roster spots. Sammy is by no means a superstar but neither is he as painful to watch as those past Wings were.

So a career record barely above .500 and winning ONE playoffs series in 8 seasons places Andy Murray among the "Proven" how, exactly?

Sundin would have to pay the 'Hawks if he wanted to play there, considering they're at or over the cap already.

By people showing up they give the Ford's an excuse to believe their team is relevant. If noone showed, then they might try to put an actual team on the field to avoid the embarrassment of having a great stadium with noone in it. And, I'm sorry, I just loose a whole lot of respect for anyone who can support that sorry-sack, piece-of-$h!t organization. They deserve to be ignored as much as possible. Worst organization in sports history, they've been pathetic for 50 years and the one constant is they're owned by that moron, Williams Clay Ford Sr. "Do You Believe In Now?" Ya, nice add campaig, what the f*** have the Lions ever given fans to believe in? Complete e,barrassment in every way possible to the city of Detroit and sports fans in general.

Being a Wings fan and being blessed enough to see truly talented players come through the team, I've always considered being a point-per-game player over the course of one's career to be an important sign of being a truly great player. Obviously Yzerman and Fedorov fit the bill and they are rightly-so considered some of the best ever. Will Datsyuk reach that plateau this season? He has 425 pts in 445 games for his career. So, he would need to score 20 more points than games played this season to reach a point-per-game for his career. Zetterberg has 332 pts in 355 career games. He would need 23 more pts than games played, what are his chances? And what are the chances they both achieve those totals in the same season?

Gotcha, in that case, I also, would be suprised if Lidstrom kept the same salary level. Holstrom is probably underpaid as is, so I don't know how much lower he'd be willing to go. Maltby, honestly, I'd be suprised if he'd be able to keep himself i the league past next season. At this point the Wings are better off getting Kopecky, Adbelkader and Helm to take Maltby's ice-time.

OK, first of all, Erickson can be sent back to GR without being exposed to waivers, so even IF the Wings had a major collective brain malfunction concerning his talent or potential, there is absolutely no reason he needs to be exposed or traded this up coming season anyways. With Chelios and Lilja most likely returning, Erickson is pretty much guaranteed to start in GR becuase of his waiver status. Second of all, players CANNOT restructure contracts under the new CBA. There is no such thing as taking a paycut to help the team, unless you're signing an extension at such a lower average price that the extension would then lower the current average. And, also, extensions can only be negotiated in the final year of a players current contract, hence why the Wings have to wait until July 1st to start working with Zetterberg and Franzen.

OK, so in the fall the Hockey News will come out with it's Top 50 NHL players, where do YOU think they'll rank Lidstrom, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Franzen and Kronwall? As a recap, last year's rankings were as follows; 1. Sid he Kid 4. Lidstrom 25. Zetterberg (I think he may move up a little ) 36. Datsyuk (He may move up a spot or two as well) N/R. Franzen N/R. Kronwall IMO, Lidstrom, Zetterberg and Datsyuk should all be Top 10. Let the debate begin

Section 108, row 18!!! Our season tickets that we've had since the Joe opened... My Dad and I were at the '97 game, (missed the '98 game as it was in Carolina), my Dad and my Bro went to the '02 game, so this year its my Bro and my turn... Gotta love the rotation we have going for Cup games

I was at the Wings/Thrashers game when Hossa had a hat trick and some Thrashers fans threw their caps onto the ice. The hats were taken to the time-keepers box in-between the penalty boxes and the people were able to go down there and get their hats back.

Obviously, this thread is spurred by last nights game inwhich the Wings decided it would be better to sit back and kill off what is essentially an 18 minute Power Play by instituting the Prevent Defense. Even Mickey brought it up, "the Wings aren't forechecking, they're going 1-2-2, it's way too early for that!" What I'd like to know is your opinion on if the Prevent works? Include all sports, basketball, football, etc. My opinion? I'd say teams that get a lead and then go into the Prevent Defense have about a 70% failure rate. Nothing scientific here or any stats to back it up, just years of watching sports. It seems that, the majority of the time, when teams stop playing the way that got them into the lead and go defensive they either lose the game or come very, very close to losing it. More than anything, that cost the Wings the game last night, and it has cost many teams a whole ton of games over the years.

Earlier in the game TooToo left his feet to hit Holmstrom along the boards, no penalty there. The Preds should really take a good look at the hits they throw around before they think of labeling the Wings as dirty. No suspension, not even close. TooToo never has thrown a hit as clean as that one.

You know what makes me feel great? Franzen started his points streak the day after I dropped him from my fantasy team.. *******

First, while Sammuelsson did turn around and jab Weisnewski, it was Weisnewski who belted him in the back of the head first, a normal scrum, not a big deal. I don't believe Weisnewski meant to get him in the throat, but he does need to be more careful about that sort of thing. It's one thing to hit someone with your glove, another to use a crosscheck. Holmstrom and Samuelsson missed about the same amount of time, both incidents were within the last five minutes of a period, both players left to the locker room and returned at the start of the following period. Pronger didn't get the match penalty, Rob Nediermeyer did. When the league reviewed the match penalty they made the decision that the wrong guy was assessed the match and gave Pronger the suspension to rectify the mistake. The Wotywika play wasn't a match penalty so the league wouldn't have automatcically reviewed the play. The Wings didn't ask the league to, the Blues certainly wouldn't ask the league to, so the league probably didn't even look at it. The biggest thing that I can't understand is how Weisnewski gets the one-game for this one incident and, yet, we watch TooToo do worse on a continual basis and the league says, "hey, no big deal, no suspension needed here."

Homer talking about his groin worries me. He certainly doesn't sound very confident that its not serious. Hopefully the ultrasound will give us some good news for a change. I am glad to hear Chelios should be ready to go for Tuesday and hopefully McCarty isn't too far off either.

You're right, what a great article and I wholly agree. My favorite part; What are the chances Walkom and Bettman read and understand this concept? Or, better yet, do anything about it? About as likely as Parros scoring 50 goals in the NHL.

The NHL wants to know why hockey is a '2nd-tier sport'
Sepster replied to NHLrules?'s topic in General
Another problem is that in the NFL, NBA and MLB the league is willing to look at a controversial game and, if warranted, repirmand the offending officials. Couple of years ago in a playoff NFL game the officiating crew made two total bonehead calls against the home team and the NFL fined the crew and suspended them from officiating the remainder of the playoffs. Just this year in the NBA in a game between the Heat and the Hawks the officials mistakingly told O'Neal that he had 6 fouls and ejected him from the game when in reality he only had 5 fouls. What did the NBA do? They admitted the mistake and the Heat and Hawks were forced to replay the final minutes of that game, with O'Neal back in the game with only 5 fouls, to decide the "true" winner. Do you think the NHL would have the balls to look at the Wings game today and say, "that was a blown call, you two teams have to replay the end of the game tied 3-3." No ******* way they would. The NHL blindly side with their officials even when they are blantantly in the wrong and GOD help anyone who questions the officials omnipotence. If the NHL were more willing to come out and admit that there was a blown call and do something about it, like the other "Big 3" do it would be much easier to swallow something like today happening. -
I've never actually been to that store, but I agree, they do have some good looking stuff on there. Strange that they don't have their phone number listed on the site, but here it is; 586-532-7994 or send them an e-mail; contactus@motorcitysportsgallery.com

Bren4Wings that system doesn't work. It was used for 25 yaers that way and if a game was tied with 5 minutes left in regulation teams would go into a defensive shell and play for a tie. It was incredibly boring and thats why the "3 point" game was invented.
-
Ken Holland could have traded Jason Williams for a pack of Double Mint gum and it would have made the Wings a better team. Williams made the Wings worse just by being on the ice between his absolute FEAR of being hit, countless turnovers (he rivaled Lang in that department), his shaky play on the point for the power play and being another runt-sized player on a team full of them. While he did have some skill when compared to Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Filppulaand Hudler who are for all inetents and purposes the same size player, Williams was BY FAR the worst of the five. He is an average at best, and redundant player on a team that is too good to keep him around.

The reason the OT/Loss point was created was to entice teams to play for a win back in the days ties existed. The thinking was that once a team had already garnered a point by getting to overtime, they would be more willing to go for the extra point by winning in overtime, rather than just sitting back and playing for a tie. However, now that ties don't exist anymore the OT/loss point should go away altogether and there ahould be 2 points for a win (Regulation/Overtime/Shootout) and 0 points for a loss. Really, if your goal is to get teams to play for a win (which is what the NHL's stated goal is), then what gives teams the best motivation to go for a win. Obviously, the safest strategy for any team is to try and win in regulation. A team has 60 minutes to play solid hockey and you have time to press early, press late, make up for mistakes, whatever your fancy. Overtime is a little more dicey, you can still play well, but one mistake sinks you. And shootouts are evening more dangerous, you can be a well rounded team, but if your going up against a lesser team that only has two, maybe three, really skilled guys (Edmunton for example) all bets are off. So, by taking away the OT/loss point, the best bet for any team is to win a game in regulation. Thats the biggest motivator you can get, ALL or NOTHING. Every teams' number one priority woudl be to give themselves the best opportunity to gain points and that would be to try really damn hard to win in regulation and THAT is what would give us, the fans, the best games to watch.

You can actually see me in that video! At the 1:18 mark at the bottom left, white hat. Those seats are actually my family's season tickets, we've had them since the Joe opened in '79... we're joking that when they build the new stadium we should be able to take those exact seats with us, as we've been the only ones to have ever "owned" them ;<) Whats great about that game is that, although, other players have scored 5 or more goals in one game, Fedorov is the only one to have done it when he is the ONLY player on his team to score goals in that game.
